Just got back home from seeing it. Count me among those that loved this film. I have a soft spot for SLEEPING BEAUTY. We were more a LOONEY TUNES household growing up, but I had a small collection of the DISNEY classics and SB was my favorite, not least of which was because Maleficent was a great melodramatic, scenery chewing villain. Yes, that's no where near the story they told in this film. On it's own terms though it's wonderful. A grand fantasy adventure leagues ahead of OZ, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL or ALICE IN WONDERLAND. A visual feast which reminded me of THE NEVER ENDING STORY and THE LAST UNICORN in it's storybook imagery. Jolie brings her A game as does Copley and for that matter the rest of the cast. Is it a huge departure? Sure is. Still an entertaining and enchanting tale. My audience at the 10:30am showing in downtown Brooklyn made up of a very age diverse group clapped 3 times during the run time, for what that's worth.
If you have a soft spot for Sleeping Beauty, you aren't upset that this movie tramples over it and basically says that story is nonsense? This the TRUE version.

I understand any frustratuon a fan of the DISNEY animated musical might have. But honestly, the did make a very goid fantasy film for all ages and temperments with this. I feel I'll be in the minority here but my gut tells me that Disney is going to be quite happy with the return on this.

Am I SUPPOSED to be offened by the existence of this film? Am I some "lesser" fan of the classic film because I like it, and got swept away by the story? Is there some place I am to turn in my card, or the like?

Oh dear, looks like I stand accused of something. What ever shall I do?

C'mon man... I'm an adult. So are you. Leave that jibber jabber for the under 21 crowd.

After seasons of ONCE UPON A TIME on ABC, I'm fine with radical reimaginings of these tales. Most important of all to me is that it was a quality film that entertained and enchanted me.

Well if the movie sucks, it'll be long forgotten. Especially with modern movies and how fast things fade away. Literally I've forgotten about the Robocop remake along with the second 300.

Well, not literally, because you just mentioned them now. :oldrazz:

I don't have any particular fondness or loyalty to the original film, or to Maleficent as a villain.

so I'm open minded and looking forward to seeing this tomorrow.

Yeah no. This movie is sadly worse than Oz and Wonderland; despite how anyone felt about those movies, it did not entirely rewrite the stories/movies that inspired themand made them famous. And this movie's imagery cannot compare to The Neverending Story in any way.

I still need to see RoboCop. Thanks for reminding me. :oldrazz:

There was like an insane amount of hipster chicks at my showing last night. You know, the kind that are all into the "fae folk" as it were. :oldrazz:

I guess we're just not "getting" the vision maaaaan ::pushes up hipster glasses:: :o

ahh **** so this is gonna be another nightmare before christmas. damn goth kids:cmad:

Again Linda Woolverton has got to STAY AWAY from reimagining Disney classics and just go back to animated adaptations. I loved Beauty and the Beast, but after Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent, I do not think it works. She tries to take these older icons and inject modern feminist qualities which alters their stories entirely.

Honestly, despite some bad acting, I was fine with the Stefan and Maleficent friendship/betrayal.
But after that, it just was too much bad writing, performances, ideas, etc.

i think she does what she gets payed. listen to the studio :yay:

I would prefer if she just turned down the live action remake projects. Is she involved with the new Cinderella remake too?

The ugly sisters would end up as the heroes, trying to right injustices against the evil prince and the scheming, backstabbing Cinderella for giving them an allergic reaction so their feet swelled.

Just waiting for the other shoe to drop now.

wouldn't be surprised if they did that, even in the animated sequels one of the sisters was retconned to be a misunderstood character who is misled by her mother and just wants a man/true love

No, no. Cinderella will break free with a magic blade forged from the glass of her slippers. She summons them with a pumpkin shield to battle her wicked stepsisters who are revealed to have a pet dragon known as the Liverwortson.

Well technically the animated Disney version sort of tramples all over the original fairy tale.

I ended up seeing this today, and the story as told was ok, but I was disappointed we didn't get straight up, evil right from beginning, scenery chewing villain that Maleficent was in the original incarnation.

Instead we got...

A good fairy turned vengeful over being wronged. Even that might have been ok if she had gone, and stayed, full on irredeemable evil from that point on, but she went all soft and protective of Aurora and even tried to revoke the curse. I had to roll my eyes when the "true love's kiss" came from Maleficent, even though I saw it coming a mile away. Just too many damn changes, like the dragon being the crow rather than Maleficent and the happy ending rather than Maleficent being killed. Only Disney could "over Disneyfy " a Disney classic with a modern re-telling

It does look like it will be successful, it is looking like a 65-70m opening weekend at this point.

Saw this today and before I start. I really liked the Disney version of Sleepy Beauty. Now with that being said I don't mind seeing a bit of twists on those stories. IDK if Once upon a time gave me that feeling to see twists on those Favorite Fairy tales but I pretty much didn't mind this movie at all.

Sure Maleficent is suppose to be the biggest Disney Villian in all of Disney Villains so turning her into a a vengeful fairy and getting redemption at the end I guess ruffles peoples feathers a bit. However People this movie was called Maleficent not Sleeping Beauty so you had to have this feeling they were going to make Maleficent a Hero in this movie. Let me just add that the Kings in this movie was a bunch of ***holes.
