I pull it off.

To be honest, I've had a big bushy beard for about 4 years now and I've noticed a lot of younger guys doing the whole beard and faded hairstyle ''hipster'' thing or whatever it's called, so yeah it's a fashion choice I'd say.

For actors, I think it's supposed to make them slightly less recognizable so they can go about their daily lives a little more easily. Chris Evans does the same thing too, as soon as a movie finishes shooting, he grows out a beard.

Not sure how well it works for Cavill as people seem to stop him for pics all the time regardless, but maybe it would be even worse otherwise!

A lot of actors have been doing the beard thing for a while now.

I think as theotherme said, I think it's part to be unrecognizable. I also I think because of freedom. Remember when Emma Watson cut her hair into a pixie cut.
I read something where she was saying that she had to keep her hair the same way for so long because of Harry Potter so she wanted to experiment with her look. I guess actors do the same with their beards. They had to keep a certain look for a certain period due to filming and they just wanna use their new freedom to mess around with their look.
