The Amazing Spider-Man Marc Webb to return?

I reread the cbm article about Webb possibly not returning, and it states that they want him back but Fox holds all the cards due to Webb's obligations to the studio to do one more film:

The Amazing Spider-Man is still chugging along at the box office with the last numbers that we got going over the 500 million dollar range. With numbers like that and the films cliff hanger after credits scene a sequel is all but a given. Whether or not director Marc Webb will be apart of the sequel not so much a given. Columbia Pictures Chief Doug Belgrad sat down to talk with The Hollywood Reporter where he said Fox Studio holds the power to let Webb do the film or not. We'd really like him back, but there are obstacles. He has an obligation to Fox," he said. The obligation that Belgrad is referring to is Webb owes them another film for doing 500 Days of Summer. This is all still up in the air at the moment and it is NOT a for sure answer that he isn't going to return. What this does mean though is that there is a chance that Spidey will have a new director when he hits theaters again in 2014.

Seems extremely curious that this situation wasn't foreseen and sorted out before he started on the first ASM movie.
Fox doesn't seem to need that movie out anytime soon considering they haven't announced **** about it so Marc might as well sign up for the sequel if he's up for it.

Wow! I really hope this isn't true. Spider-Man films need Marc Webb right now.

Even if someone could do a better job?
Exactly. I understand and respect the fact that people enjoyed his work on the film, but we should never rule out the possibility that someone else can do a better job.

The character moments in this movie seen, even people that hate on the movie admit as much so getting a character director who can get the sensibilities of young people and make it engaging and relateable is going to be different. I certainly don't want them to go after a hack action director.

If someone can do a better job I'm fine with Webb being replaced. However I'd rather not take that risk. I think Webb did a great job and him being replaced could mean things could change in a negative way.

I've never been a fan of replacing a director in the midst of a storytelling process. The result could be another Quantum of Solace-type disaster.

Agreed, the number of times a series of films has kept the quality and tone at least the same level as the first chapter after replacing the director is extremely small. Harry Potter is one example of where the quality was higher after replacing the original director, but is the exception (though they had such a clear template to follow in the books), but as you said, it's a huge risk and chances are almost certain that the end result will be a step down in quality and yield a disjointed feel among the movies, especially since Webb did such a good job with the actors and in setting up his Spidey world for the sequels.

Though I'm satisfied finally having a Spider-man movie I respect and enjoy, I'd love to see a complete Marc Webb trilogy.

Imagine if WB fired Christopher Nolan after Batman Begins because it didn't make as much as they hoped.

Yeah, no kidding. I know Batman fanboys will denounce comparisons between directors, but it's a very valid point. It's one thing if Webb failed to deliver a good, solid, entertaining film and critics and audiences were up in arms at the "FAIL". That is clearly not the case here. He needs to be allowed to make his trilogy with his vision. I have no doubt it would be fantastic.

im just afraid they might end up with a hack like joel shoemauker who would want to make some campy crap like batman and robin!

Me too, my heart would break because I can almost guarantee that if they replace Webb, it will be with some talentless hack. I can feel it.

The score you gave it went down a bit, maybe it doesn't need Webb as much as some believe

Webb made me care about the characters, unlike the Raimi Movies, where the only things I cared about were the villains and action sequences. So I say he needs to be back.

I don't understand why your first point even remotely relates to the second point.

I think this ''someone'' that can do a better job is Webb himself.
The same way that Raimi learned with his mistakes from the first movie and gave us a much better second movie, the same will most likely happen here. It's usually like that with comic book movies. I'm expecting Webb to do a much superior second movie and I know he can.

Besides, I like Webb's style. I like how much he cares about the characters and the dialog. I don't worry about the action because it was awesome, I know it will be awesome again and action is easier to do than character development, which Webb does so well.

I really hope he comes back.

It's still 9.7 and my favourite movie of all time right now. It's still not the perfect film as it could have been a little, little better (better directing at the action scenes and a more beastly Lizard but other than that everything else is perfect to me).

This!

Totally agreed with this. Also, I think it's much better continuety wise having the same director. I mean (and I know everyone hates them here) if you look at the Twilight movies, you can tell each movie has different director because each so drastically different from the previous. The only thing I do like about such scenarios is the discussions after on who prefers what because so and so did this or made this look different etc etc.

Spider-Man is very much like Bond, where everyone has a different 'vision' of how they see him etc. because the source material is so vast any director can add their own vision to the table. All I know is that I absolutely love Webb's vision so far, and for the story they seem to be strongly foreshadowing to, I think the tone and vision he has created is perfect for that.

As much as I love Webb's movie...Raimi did a wonderful job of making you care about Peter and those around him. It's one of the reasons I am so fond of SM2.

Yeah I gave ASM a 9.4 which broke my top 4 all time comic book movies. Not an easy task because I'm very picky.
