Martin Campbell is Directing Green Lantern

Please, please, please let The Flash be next! It would be great to have Green Lantern in 2010 and The Flash in 2011!

Sombody posted over at another site that CommingSoon.net it reporting that the release date for this film will be December 17, 2010.

a holiday release?

hmmm.... very interesting.

either they are oscar baiting this thing or the production crew doesnt have enough time to get it done by next summer so they pushed it for end of the year.

or they seriously took the advice "LOTR meets SW" when making this movie. :woot:

I think that a holiday release is a very good idea. I am very excited about this announcement!

it shows that Campbell won't be rushing to get this made. If they start in late spring/early summer, that is a long and healthy schedule (just like how the production of Watchmen was too)

Warners tends to give their films decent schedules. It's good to see Green Lantern being afforded that.

unlike what Thor or Iron Man 2 is going through. It's not that I want them to fail, but it's just so premature to set everything for The Avengers film in 2011. all i want are good films, and i hope they deliver.

finaly a winter realese of a comicbook movie. finaly.
is this really so hard? obvious if a movie is good people will watch it.

^Yep, and i think the fantasy based GL will be well suited to a holiday release.

Surprised they chose a Christmas release date, would have thought GL was ripe for a summer tentpole, but at least they arent rushing it, which is a very good thing.

I certainly hope so. The science fiction/fantasy market is very large (some say the Star Trek community is some 160 million strong) and if you can tap into just a portion of that with a good film, you could get some significant returns at the box office. A December release could also mean a "for your consideration" type of movie. Of course this is premature, and we will have to get the director confirmed and see what the casting will be.

A question to the mods: With a released date revealed, would all we need is a confirmation on the director or will we have to wait for the casting to be set to get a board for Green Lantern?

We need Hal cast, then it goes up. Campbell is more or less confirmed.

This is great news. DC is finally doing some of the other characters. I hope we get some good Superman re-boot & Flash news soon.

Can't wait. It's about bloody time they understood they have other heroes besides Batman and Superman ( and Superman is my fav.)

So now that we have an official release date - shouldn't there be a GL Sub-forum opening up soon?

yea i agree dec release was a good move so they have alot of time for production. If its may/june start for first unit filming(we know some second unit is starting up next month) they could go for a 4-6 month filming period which is amount of time most films do first unit filming and run to sept/oct range. Then do post work and any reshots between dec-may range and then start off early viral and promotion marketing around the same time frame they did for tdk and all that. Also what big wb films are due out end of this year sept-dec period, i would expect they would target first teaser trailer with them.

Suprised WB went for a December release... wow. Guess this means they may settle for Superman in December 2011 if it breaks right for them.

well we still need to have wb make official call on what is going to happen with superman still, so much rumors and flip floping information superman production is so up in the air currently.

I am starting to have major doubts myself.... imagine it is Marvel getting it all wrong and DC getting all right in the end... when we all thought it would be the other way around. No way Marvel will deliver in such a short span. They pretty much blew off 2009 completely... and Thor is STILL not on full steam.

Sherlock Holmes is the big Warners release this December.

Why must it always be an "us vs them" mentality? If Marvel gets it right then WB/DC will get it wrong; if WB/DC get it right then Marvel will get it wrong.

Here's a novel thought - they could both get it right. Look at 2008 - two Marvel flicks and one WB/DC flick, and all three got it very, very right.

Yeah.

As a fan of both DC and Marvel, I've never understood the whole rivalry thing in regrards to wither the comics or the movies.

If they both produce the goods, then it's a win/win situation for me as I get to see my favourite characters fully realised on the big screen in all their glory.

^Bingo, as a fan of characters from both companies, I never understood the rivalry among the fans.
