Random question with the rumors of him playing Everett K. Ross and General William Ross being in the movie. Are the two Ross's related?

Based on a new interview he gave, it sounds like he'll be playing an Everett Ross-type guy and not a politician. He says he's government employee who's job it is to keep the superheroes and their powers in check. He says he won't necessarily be a good guy or bad guy but someone more in the gray area.

Why Ross and not Gyrich? Genuine question, as I'm not familiar with the character. Of what I've read his claim to relevance is that he's an authority on Wakanda.

True, but there might be some deal similar to Quicksilver. Him being a bit character used fifteen years ago might make it easier.

I just don't understand the zeal for this Ross person.

Its still weird to me that Fox have Gyrich. I always associated him with the Avengers.

Ross is someone strongly tied to Black Panther. Having it be Ross is a reason for him to return in that movie. Henry Peter Gyrich is a guy who is decently important in the comics but frankly doesn't really stand out as an Avengers character. I've always thought of him as more important to the X-Men.

ETA: Cross-posted. I guess that shows how minds differ. Maybe it's because he was featured strongly in the X-Men 90s cartoon (while any relevant Avengers cartoons didn't seem to have him). He was also significant during Claremont's run of the X-Men.

I think he definitely sounds like Gyrich. I guess the question is whether or not Marvel can use him since he appeared in X-Men.

Perhaps he could be an Everett Ross/Henry Gyrich amalgam of some sort, if Marvel can't use the latter? Perhaps with Ross' name but Gyrich's personality.

My theory is Henry Gyrich.

Here's my SPECULATION, i don't claim to know anything about the inner workings of Fox/Marvel

About him appearing in a X-Men from 2000, Marvel Studios (the Movie Studio) wasn't a thing yet, so it's possible whoever wrote the film assumed they had the rights as the character had been associated more with X-Men at the time. Marvel Studios would have noticed and not cared because it's not like they were making their own movies and needed the character.
Or something similar.
Also the fact the credits only list him as 'Guyrich' might suggest a rights issue or oversight

Fast forward 16 years and Marvel Studios being a what it is needs to use a character like Gyrich, and low and behold they own the rights to him.

Gyrich first appeared in 1977 in Avengers #165, could be marvel owns him outright, could be a sharing thing like the Maximoff twins.

Or here's the thing, it could be Everett Ross, someone else from canon or a completely new character, I'm just speculating haha

I doubt Marvel would let an oversight pass. Rights issues were always important because, if you fail to protect your brand, you can lose it. And even if Marvel didn't want to make movies, they did want to sell their movie rights (so losing a character could hurt that value).

Now it's possible it's shared rights, but I doubt something slipped by like that.

Yeah, that's most probably the reason why his character is kept secret - there wouldn't be any other that I can think of...

I'm still hoping that this a smokescreen and he's actually Norman Osborn setting up H.A.M.M.E.R. thus propelling the MCU forward into new storylines past IW1 & IW2.

Then again, an "evil" SHIELD-type organization may have lost its luster after the real SHIELD turned out to be evil HYDRA
