Except it's pretty damn true. Everything about the 90's was pretty ****ing awful. There's a reason why the industry almost died during that time. Character like Venom, Gambit, Cable, etc were some of the more popular characters.

Oh, now you don't like gambit or cable? thems fightin' words. And maybe you got it backwards. maybe there's a reason why comic books have never been as big as they were in the 90s

truth be told... "popular" characters wouldn't cause the downfall of the comics... they'd sell more of them. People did indeed burn out on Venom, but even today, fanboys aside, probably view venom as spidey's best villain... and most recognizable. And i've never heard of anyone getting "burnt out" on gambit...

Venom's an extremely one note character that's his main problem. Especially the most popular Brock version though. And he spun off a million little copy cat symbiotes.

Cable has the time travel extremeness going against him. Then they created Rachel, Bishop, and X-Men and hell even Hope based on his ''success".

Gambit screams of trying to create another Wolverine. Bad boy who sometimes is loyal to the X-Men and others is a problem/henderance to them.

None of these characters offer anything that someone already doesn't. Every character who was created in the last 89-late 90's period has either had to have a radical rehaul to continue to be used (how many times has Jubilee been changed since her inception as a character) or has been killed off, fell into the background (What has Gambit done lately except be the third wheel in Mike Carey's Rogue/Magneto fetish?) or had to stop being used (Adam X anyone) because they were just either extremely one note or just stopped being relevant.

The characters of that period and them being focused on was one of the main reasons 90's comic book story telling sucked so bad and why the industry was failing. The stories were not good because they were focusing on terrible characters.

majority of superheroes have several character's who had a "take" on there archetypal first. You're just singling out characters you don't like or don't get. Wolverine isn't an original personality either... hell even one of the first superheroes "superman" when dissected isn't even original.

also... everyone can't be in the spotlight at once. So it's really no surprise that most 90s characters are now on the back burner.. they will come around again.. just like now more 70s and 80s characters are being rejuvenated and brought front in center... (luke cage, ms marvel, ironfist, nova, etc...) this is pretty common.

About Gambit, remember the list I posted that had the top 50 most popular Marvel characters from CBR? Well that list brought into light was that that a lot of characters people take for granted as "exceedingly popular!" are in fact...not. Gambit is a good example. I've seen people claim he's "the 2nd most popular X-men, PERIOD" and refuse to hear anything else. A lot of X-men characters on that list beat him outside of Wolverine. When you consider how many X-men there are on that list AND how high some of them are and how many are AHEAD of him, its a pretty sad value relative to how loud his fans are.

The only reason Gambit got so popular was because of the 90s X-men cartoon and people just base everything off that. In fact, that cartoon was the only one he even had a big role in. In the actual comics, nowadays he just plays nanny to X-23.

Gambit? 2nd most popular? What, does Storm, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Jean, Emma, Colossus, Magneto, and Deadpool no longer exist?

And with the exception of Colossus, all of those guys were voted higher than him on the list.

you also realize the only people who go to CBR are fanboys right? of course other x-men are going to be higher ranked...

the x-men from the animated series will always be the most popular (aside from jubilee) because they hit the most mass general audience for pretty much a whole decade up until the x-men movies.

this is a video game FOR the general public. not fanboys. so when arguing what a fanboy site ranks characters... really matters not when you're trying to compare it to a game thats not just for one group of people.... but all.

People who actually read the comics are fanboys? I go there and I'm not even that big of a comic buff.

The point I was trying to make is that comic fans are satisfied with the roster. Combine people who only watched 90s cartoons with a narrow mind and there's the problem. They think that only characters THEY'VE been exposed to should get in. And in their mindset anyone they never heard of or wasn't in MVC2 is just some "obscure nobody" that "stole" their favorite characters spot.

I bet if the Marvel poll were done either there, comicvine, or even here for that matter instead of CU, the results would have been similar.(minus the characters that were already in)

Look at the roster of this game. 98 percent of the comic book side is more tailored to fan boys (as it should be) than the idiot general public. Otherwise characters like She Hulk, MODOK, Taskmaster, X-23, Super Skrull, Deadpool, Nova, Doctor Strange, and Rocket Racoon wouldn't stand a chance at getting into this thing.

Exactly. If the general public always had their way every Marvel roster would consist of, Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Iceman, Psylocke, Gambit, Rogue, Cable, Phoenix, Nightcrawler, Magneto, Juggernaut, Sabretooth, Spider-man, Venom, Carnage, Cap, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Deadpool, Blade, Punisher, Doom, and the F4.

It would just be the same roster over and over and over again. And we'd barely get any newcomers.

Storm and Iceman are barely used in anything nowadays. Gambit's essentially X-23's babysitter and third wheel to Magneto/Rogue. Cable's dead. Phoenix is dead/collecting pieces of herself, Nightcrawler's dead. Juggernaut is probably about to be irrelevant now that Colossus has taken his place, Sabretooth is dead, Eddie Brock the ''Venom" isn't even Venom anymore, Carnage had a pretty lackluster mini-series, and Blade can't even hold a successful solo book.

This is why the general public should not be allowed top pick.

that's marvels hand which is fine... but the game also still has Ironman, Cap, Thor, Spider-man, Wolverine, etc... so it still does indeed appeal to the general public. The general public had no clue who Shuma-gorath, Marrow, Spiral, blackheart, or probably even Thanos was... so these games have always been a mix of both fanboyism and general public appeal. It's not leaned to one side more so than the other.

which is a shame, because they're great characters. But like i said... "Everyone can't be front and center all the time" or no books would really work

Well, hopefully Storm and Iceman's situations will change with the split of the X-Men and apparently both of them being important people to their sides, but we'll see.

I know that. But like I said, some people think only characters they know should be in. For some reason they seem to think MVC is an "All Star Marvel/Capcom characters I know" game. It never was.

Another thing is that Marvel cares more about promoting their characters. They even did this back then with the previous games advertising their shows and now they're doing the same thing with MVC3. Advertising different shows and movies. Exact same scenario. People just didn't notice back then because almost all the Marvel characters were in a 90s cartoon.

People make She-Hulk out to be some "obscure nobody". If that's the case then Iron Man was no different back when MVC2 came out.

lol to be fair... ironman was pretty much about the same level as she hulk is now in popularity back then

I'm pretty sure who they pick is mostly influenced by who's popular in japan.

All the characters chosen were picked by Marvel, one for more exposure and two for movies they have planned. Also to note 3 of the characters on Marvel's side will have big roles in 2012...

Is Nova getting his book back?

Back to my post i'm talking about the new characters. :hehe: Not sure about Nova getting his book back, but he makes his return in the new Point One book.

Axel Alonso confirmed the three characters to watch out for in 2012 are Iron Fist, Nova and Hawkeye.

Point one? When is that coming out?
