Who is the persecuted readers? Black people? That was not the demographic back in the 60s. Stan Lee was not pitched or aimed at drawing in non-white readers. Diversity comes in more forms than just race. There's gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation. A team of Jean, Scott, Iceman, Storm, Jubilee (or Psylocke) and Colossus would be diverse without having to change anyone's race

People bringing up Claremont is kind of ironic. Lein Wein and Dave Cockrum created the ANAD international team. Claremont came on and almost immediately killed off the Native American and got rid of the Japanese character. He then got rid of Banshee and every recruit up through Jubilee in 1989 was white. He did better with the New Mutants, but Jubilee was the only non-white X-men he created in that 17 year run and that doesnt include the problematic race swap he did with Psylocke (which was controversial considering he had done that with Tom Corsi and Sharon Carter)

Exactly, to keep the team diverse. That means including white characters too.

I mean, if you're interpreting "there should be less white characters" as "there should be no white characters", I don't know what to say to that.

So Scott and Jean stay white then. Case closed, right? Who stays white in your scenario? It makes sense that it be the main members.

That is the problem with you @Marvel_United. I see that that you do say you're open to more diversity and that in the X-Men case it's needed. But your problem is that everytime we bring up more diversity you imediately think we're talking about having no white characters at all. We're not talking about that.

A few pages back a posted a few images with the main X-teams (X-Men, X-Factor, X-Force) and the X-villains. There is one black woman there. Don't you think that's awful? And there's like 5 other POC, among 50+ characters.

So no, we're not against having white characters portrayed as white. Actually, Riley Keough is my main pick for Jean. But I'm not opposed to Jean being played by a person of color. And I don't want the X-Universe to be majorly white like those images I posted. I want it to represent the diversity we see around today. And celebrate that.

Do I think Scott and Jean will stay white? Yes, because I think corporate executives won't want to race swap their main male and female lead. Do they have to stay white? No, even though they probably will.

Characters I think have to stay white are Nightcrawler (let's face it, dude is white), Colossus, Gambit (all Cajuns are white...I think?), Rogue, Angel (if they stick to his 616 background), Kitty Pryde, Banshee, and probably Wolverine (he might have some wiggle room between white and Native American). That's off the top of my head.

Probably not. But we're getting into complicated territory here. It can be argued that it's a METAPHOR for prejudice and not an actual social biopic about our (the minority experience) in America. Therefore it doesn't have to adhere to real life. But you know what? No matter what, somebody would still complain. If the comic sold well, that would tell you what people really think of the book.

Literally all the early Marvel comics walked that thin line between metaphor and real life. The FF were sent in space to beat the Russians, Iron Man went to Vietnam, Spidey was a mascot for college protesters. The "metaphor only" thing you're talking about sounds more like early DC than early Marvel (see The Doom Patrol).

The irony is that the X-Men comic did get cancelled due to not selling well. It's generally considered to be the weakest early Marvel comic. The X-Men didn't get big till a decade later when Claremont came along (and again, he made them diverse by 1975 standards).

They really should avoid casting any black man as Beast and Im sure Disney wont

Who is the persecuted readers? Black people? That was not the demographic back in the 60s. Stan Lee was not pitched or aimed at drawing in non-white readers. Diversity comes in more forms than just race. There's gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation. A team of Jean, Scott, Iceman, Storm, Jubilee (or Psylocke) and Colossus would be diverse without having to change anyone's race

Anyone who was persecuted in 1963 (black people, women, LGBT, people with disabilities). No one said X-Men is purely a racial metaphor, hence why no one wants to get rid of all white X-Men. But X-Men in general was still primarily aimed at people with problems Peter Parker didn't have.

I wasn't aware of that. Still, I know Giant-Size X-Men was novel at the time for its diversity.

No but that seems to be whats implied in this thread. The vasy majority of posts calling for changes to the character is in regards to race. Not many (if any) calling for gender swaps, straight characters made gay, bi or trans, nor giving others disabilities

Mostly because all those other metaphors are covered. Cyclops is a metaphor for people with disabilities. The Phoenix gives Jean symptoms of bipolar/MP disorder. Iceman was recently made gay in the comics. As for women, the X-Men have a pretty good male-to-female ratio.

In a reboot starring roughly 5-6 X-Men, that leaves racial diversity as the only big one missing.

I mean couldn't someone like Cyclops already be seen as a metaphor for someone with a physical disability? And Iceman being gay makes him a minority already in the comics. Jean could be a metaphor for someone with a mental disability (Since she struggles her mental powers) So you could technically say those 3 are already minorities and don't need a race swap

I'm gay and I did mention here that my biggest concern is regarding LGBTs. Because I'm sure Marvel will add more diversity when it comes to POC. But when it comes to LGBT is a whole different story. And I also mentioned here too that I really want a trans actress to join the franchise.

Now when it comes to gender swaps, the X-Men have a bunch of iconic women. We can't really say that about black people, for instance. That's the difference.

Now when it comes to change the sexual orientation of the characters, honey, I'm all for it. Especially the male characters. Are you?

I mean couldn't someone like Cyclops already be seen as a metaphor for someone with a physical disability? And Iceman being gay makes him a minority already in the comics. Jean could be a metaphor for someone with a mental disability (Since she struggles her mental powers) So you could technically say those 3 are already minorities and don't need a race swap

But none of that has to do with the color of their skin. Minorities of race would like to see diversity, as do minorities of gender, sexual orientation, religion and so on. So why is it the main characters have to be white?

That is the problem with you @Marvel_United. I see that that you do say you're open to more diversity and that in the X-Men case it's needed. But your problem is that everytime we bring up more diversity you imediately think we're talking about having no white characters at all. We're not talking about that.
When Alfred Enoch is suggested for Cyclops with many praising that choice and when I do concede that I want more racial diverse characters just not the main members - then the argument evolves into "Well, why can't the poc be the main characters" so I can't choose a side here. I'm firmly in the middle.

A few pages back a posted a few images with the main X-teams (X-Men, X-Factor, X-Force) and the X-villains. There is one black woman there. Don't you think that's awful? And there's like 5 other POC, among 50+ characters.
Yeah, it is pretty jarring. I will admit that there isn't enough diversity.

And there's where our stances diverge. I'm firmly against having Jean, Scott, Logan, Kitty be anything other than their original race. I don't think you should mess with the faces of the franchise. and that's a concept many who are in favor of race changes don't agree with and that's why we don't see eye to eye.

Because Scott and Jean are white. End of story. They are the faces of the franchise. Bobby is gay so assuming he stays that way in the MCU- he doesn't really need to change race.

The real question is - when will it be good enough in your opinion? So Jean and Cyclops get swapped, what then? Is that enough? Was Hoemcoming not good enough because Peter was still white despite all of the racial diversity in the movie? My fan cast for X-Men is pretty diverse but even then, someone will say "it's not enough because Wolverine, Cyclops, Charles and Marvel Girl are 3 white people among 10 minorities.

You could use Laura as the female Wolverine and that would be a major statement. Just saying.

It's good enough when most of the popular and iconic xmen aren't all white. End of story. I dont care that they're white in the comics. I want to see a more diverse group of the characters I like on screen. End of story. I dont care that homecoming changed a bunch of background characters, I prefer spiderman white. I prefer wolverine be white too. But I'd like to see more than just one A lister be a racial minority. It's that simple, all of my favorite xmen are white and are considered A list and I'd rather see them represent a broader range of races. I dont want to see a bunch of b or c listers I care about. And I dont want every white xman to be changed. But just a few of the more popular ones to be something other than white guys.

In a reboot starring roughly 5-6 X-Men, that leaves racial diversity as the only big one missing.
thats a cop out especially when other races are covered in the forms of Storm, Psylocke and Bishop. Again no need to change any races.

Romance tends to play such a minor role in these films that I wouldn’t mind it. Some characters need to go untouched like Scott and Jean bc they are an iconic couple which actually drove story. Colossus though? Make him like his ultimate counterpart

So no diversity is good enough unless it's the main character(s). I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree because that's an argument that I can't challenge. It's your opinion

The characters who aren't main characters and are diverse and deserve their shine too, but there's a reason why they aren't main characters or why they aren't main stays of primary xmen teams. So making the diversity options of the team one A lister and and a handful of B and C listers feels like a lazy way of adding diversity for diversity's sake especially when there are 10 plus A listers who are all white characters and are more likely to get the shine.

And this the reason why I'm in the middle-ground on this issue. So because the main characters are still their original race, all other diversity is inconsequential? What's the point of even changing anyone who isnt the main character's race then? Was Spider-Man: Homecoming's diversity "lazy" because the main character was white? Okay, so what if the main X-Men were non-white but the supporting cast of was all-white? Would that be a fair tradeoff and make the diversity matter? This is what I was talking about before. Marvel can't please everyone. This is why they should focus on telling a great story first and foremost.

Look spiderman is a solo character and the single most important character to spiderman stories, the comparison you're making doesn't make much sense to me. The xmen are ensemble of characters who have a handful of characters that could lead a story, and marvel only has so much time to tell an effective story with some of these characters without over crowding the movie or turning the characters into cardboard cut outs like the foxmen. So if they are going to do that they are probably going to use characters that draw fans and newcomers a like to the movie. For what the xmen represent and the political climate in America right now it's going to be super important that marvel diversify these super heroes from now on.
So if marvel decides they're going to tell a story using the characters that sell, over some of the less popular minority characters that dont sell or appeal to as many people and they just diversify their money makers just a little bit, isnt changing a few of the white characters who are more popular and have a better chance of not only appealing to a wider crowd, but also sell tickets a chance they should take?

The problem is that most X-Men are white, so it's only a matter of time before they keep expanding the team and reach a point where they have to race swap some X-Men or create new minority ones. Even if the first film starts out with (for example) Scott, Jean, Bobby, Storm, Psylocke and Bishop, that's just a temporary solution to the problem. Eventually they'll reach a point where they risk lacking diversity, just like how they'll eventually reach a point where having 30 straight X-Men and 1 LGBT would look silly.
