Glad to see them address this, I feel like Latinos have really gotten the short end of the stick, even more than most other groups... they're the largest minority in the country and we've gotten, what, one latino hero on TV??

The lack of latinos in the X-Men main roster is unbelievable.

yeah the one latino mutant (Sunspot) in DOFP got all of his lines cut and reduced to a background character. For me being a double minority, black and gay I would love to see a diverse X-Men team; Scott, Jean, Hank, Ororo, Bishop, Psylocke, Jubilee, Gambit, Colossus, Wolverine, Rogue, Thunderbird, Nightcrawler, Sunfire, Iceman (lgbt) they all come from such diverse backgrounds and I hope each character gets there moment in the MCU. I don't care if its a small role long as they get included, that can make ppl smile to see a representation of who they are on the big screen.

yeah, not just the X-men, its the whole Marvel U... how many latino heroes can anyone even name? And then, how many have gotten a push as a main character??
Sunspot had a minute as an Avenger, Robbie Reyes is getting a push now... but otherwise they're side characters or derivative legacy heroes like Spidey 2099

Nova also got the push. I hope the movie combine the Novas into one character. An adult Latino hero.

It feels like fans are resistant to adding new members to the "core" group of X-Men even while they are fine with adding them to the X-family and secondary teams. We've added the likes of Gambit but the majority of the core are the old characters that have been around for decades. There is good diversity in the more recent additions, but there seems to be a reluctance to add them officially to what fans consier to be in group (same goes for me to honest). After DofP I would have liked a push to get Blink in there in the comics and other mediums for eg.

I remember someone (I think it was here) suggesting Riz Ahmed, an actor of pakistani descent, to play Nightcrawler. Being german is not really important or defining for Kurt as much as being catholic is. With that being said, even tho catholics exists in Pakistan and are a minority there, I think it would make more sense to change Kurt to a latino instead of pakistani, since Latin America is majorly catholic and part of their culture as well.

It wouldn't hurt hearing Kurt saying "Mi amigo/Meu amigo", "Dios mio/Meu deus", instead of "Mein Freund/Mein Gott" (If they would change him)

Tbh I'm not sure about changing Kurt's nationality. A latino actor playing him is one thing but changing his country of origin is another.

A latino playing Kurt but hiding a latino identity for the character works for diversity behind the camera, but doesn’t count for latino representation in the story.

Kurt is a character that would work perfectly translated to the latin community, while maintaining all the essence of the character. I'm latino, I can say that.

I honestly don't see anything about Kurt's german nationality that is irreplaceable.

But that's like taking Peter Parker out of New York and making him Australian. The Big Apple is ingrained within the DNA of the character and so is Kurt being German. Who he is influenced by where he grew up and even you admitted that you'd have to completely change the way he speaks because he is so unapologetically German. I think characters like Kurt, Colossus and Sean should remain German, Russian and Irish. It's part of who they are.

So yea, Kurt can be played by a non-white actor as Mystique doesn't have to be played by a white actress, but his nationality shouldn't be changed imo

Well, I still don't get it and I still don't feel like his german identity is irreplaceable and would change who he is. And I still feel like changing him to a latino, where catholicism has a huge influence is its culture, would change almost nothing about the character. And he would maintain all of his essence. It's not like making him japonese or indian.

We talked previously about updating Eric, and our points were doing it not only because his origin is set too long in the past, but also to modernize the X-Men, bringing oppresed minorities struggling right now. I feel like Kurt's change would fit into that, modernizing the X-Men.

i think the Magneto situation is a little bit different because of the fact that his origin is outdated. It presents a unique opportunity to modernize Magneto in a way that is very true to what he stands for which is a minority striking back against his oppressor. Kurt's origin is not outdated.

Culture plays a big part in shaping who a person is. It's not an inconsequential part of a person. I'm all for more Latino representation but not at the expense of characters whom already have a rich culture ingrained onto their person. You could make Allison Blaire unapologetically Latino and change nothing about her character because her culture doesn't really inform her character in any way at all. In fact, I was thinking Victoria Justice would be a great choice for Dazzler

I don't see anything about Kurt in need of modernization.
and arguments (yes my-way-or-the-highway type arguments, not constructive discussion)
It has indeed turned into that...

I would support casting a latino actor as Nightcrawler, particularly given Lip's point that Catholicism is so influential and the X-men need representation, particularly from communities that are most marginalized. The Giant Sized X-men cast emphasized diversity of nationality particularly to humanize individuals that America had been at war with (or were currently at war with if you count the Cold War). They became iconic and, as the foundations for the X-men's popularity, unchangeable because of it. The X-men should act as a mirror for processes of dehumanization, which requires updates and changes that comics are so reluctant to make. Interestingly, Claremont is invested in these topics given his recent X-men Black: Magneto.

It would also be great to see Sunspot (as Afro-Brazilian), Rictor (as someone who is bisexual), and Cecilia Reyes. Cecilia Reyes is such a natural and easy fit as a supporting cast member...

Actually, I would personally not choose Nightcrawler as a prime character to race bend. Why? Because I don't want the perception to be they can only be race bend characters if they're blue or monstrous in some way.

I agree, and it's exactly for understanding latin culture from a personal perspective that I see changing Kurt to a latino without any major change at all to who he is as a person.

I understand you feel differently about changing Kurt. But I don't see any change whatsoever into who he is.

Absolutely. I'm against that as well. I just brought up Kurt because it was a recent realization, and, IMO, it wouldn't change anything essential to the character. Quite the opposite, I think it would enrich his story.

It feels really fitting given who Kurt is.

One of the things I loved about Cecilia when she was introduced, is that she wanted to be a successful doctor and for that she needed to hide she was a mutant. I think that is the kind of topic that the movies wouldn't have proper time to develop. So for that reason I'd love to see Cecilia in a TV show.

I could see her as a main character rather than a supporting character if we are talking about a TV show instead of a movie.

I really think Beast needs to be an Avenger. He has a long history as an Avenger in the comics and he's a natural fit with the science bros (and sis Shuri). Beast acts as both the X-men's doctor and tech guy. Putting him in the Avengers opens the door for Cecilia or/and Forge to fill his roles in the X-men. Both of these characters are deserving of some spotlight.

I'm perfectly fine with Beast being an Avenger and Forge (or Cecilia, in a way) taking his role.

The thing about Cecilia that I really liked is that she was a career driven woman, and being a mutant could jeopardize that. She didn't want to join the X-Men.

It's an interesting approach to mutant issues, and I'd love to see that explored in a way.

I'm black and the X-men have done well in representing us. I really dig Bishop and Storms representation in the comics and the cartoon.
They were written organically into the fabric of their world that matched our real life. What I mean by organically written into is unlike many
other black superheroes, Storm and Bishop were heroes who happened to be black and not like say a Static Shock who was written to
be black. Or urban or whatever. I don't need 20 x-men to be black, we're a minority after all ha
If we're gonna have more black characters please, let me them be cool first
oh and I dont like changing a characters race to black, as if we need a bone thrown to us. No, just rise up a good solid character with a good
story and if he/she doesnt become popular then its the readers/consumers who are truly narrowminded.

Good suggestions. I'd also like to see Beast as an Avenger and any absence from the X-team would mean those roles need to be filled. Forge I would hope is an ever-present with Cecilia reluctantly getting more involved.

Hopefully Storm becomes the first lady of the MCU from the beginning with powers like Thor, and we get Bishop later down the line. The MCU has been more open to out-there stuff like time travel and the quantum realm than I expected so that has to help Bishop's chances.
