The Dark Knight Rises Mirror Scenes and Dialogue in TDK Trilogy

In BB Bruce is released from prison and we get a shot of Bruce facing a vast terrain. In TDKR Bruce escapes from prison and we get a shot of Bruce facing a vast terrain.

Nice posts everybody. I missed many of these.

I must admit that there are some points that seem a little shoehorned (even some of mine). I was thinking of more specific dialogue and scenes, ones that share a greater thematic value, but there are some interesting reads that I haven't thought before. I think I saw something similar in the TDKR gif thread. Here are ones that caught my mind:

- Batsuit container.(Begins, TDK, Rises)

- When the chips are down...(TDK, Rises)
Though I would argue that it was mostly the conflict between the criminals from Blackgate and the police, but the sentiment is there.

- You are practice. (Begins, Rises)
Though I would argue that the Joker fits that bill better.

- Why do we fall?. (Begins, Rises)

- Ra's and Bane comparison.(Begins, Rises)

- Very well.(Begins, TDK)
Already mentioned.

- Thank you(Begins, TDK, Rises)
Already mentioned.

Not strictly mirrors, bu references between films:

- Foreshadowing. (Begins, TDK, Rises)

- Fear, Chaos and Pain

- Begins, Ends and Rises

- As a symbol I can be incorruptible...

- The only one who lost everything.(Begins, TDK)

Also, this great line from TDKR:

BATMAN: A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a little boy's shoulder to let him know that the world hadn't ended

It is makes reference to that moment between Gordon and Bruce Wayne from Batman Begins, and it might be also thematically significant in the previous flashback of Bane and Talia in the pit, where he protects her in that horrible place, reassuring her that the world "hasn't ended". I saw it on a similar gif but I think it was removed.

The scene in TDKR when Bruce and Alfred discuss and Alfred leaves made me remember the first one between them in Begins after Bruce returns from Princeton, where Bruce asks why Alfred cared so much about Wayne family. In Rises, they're in a place almost equal, between steps from the manor, but the position of them on the scene changed, is like showing Bruce now cared about his family legacy and Alfred was ready to leave because doesn't wanted to see Bruce killing himself and kinda didn't cared that much anymore.

Ra's al Ghul and Talia both using the word "balance" a lot. That's their favourite word.

She also says, "You'll do what is necessary" at one point in Rises, which paralleled Ra's saying, "You must do what is necessary" and "So you've finally learned to do what is necessary?" in Begins.

If I hadn't thought she was Talia before these instances, I was certainly convinced by them far before she actually reveals herself.

These movies are full of a zillion instances of this particular thing, I guess Nolan loves doing it.

Here's another one from the Dark Knight:

Lucius: What's this I hear about a secret government telecommunications project?

Bruce: If you don't mind, Lucius, I'm playing this one pretty close to the chest.

*Scene after Joker tries to kill Dent in SWAT van and is subdued*

Harvey Dent: *seeing Gordon is alive* You do like to play things close to the chest!

There are a lot of poker references in TDK. The "close to the chest" lines, "When the chips are down...", the joker cards, and the Joker himself as the wild card among key players like Gordon, Dent, and Batman.

Young Ra's gets left outside the warlord's fortress and prison by a truck as he begins to find a path which leads him to the League of Shadows.

Bruce Wayne gets dumped outside a prison by a truck as he begins to find a path which leads him to the League of Shadows.

The trucks looked very similar as well.

Also, the clowns at the beginning mentioning "three of a kind."

1. TDK opens with the bat symbol in flames

TDKR opens with the bat symbol in ice (and concludes with it becoming a flaming symbol again by the end of the movie)

These also mirror the broken/rebuilt bat signals.

2. The rising fire refers to both the 'evil' and the Dark Knight (and his symbol).

3. Joker kills his own men and reveals himself via unmasking.
Bane is revealed via unmasking and his own men die for him.
(despite being unmasked, they still are wearing masks/paint)

4. Dent takes the fall for Batman because he recognizes the importance of Batman.
Batman takes the fall for Dent because he recognizes the importance of Dent's image.

Also joker saying how you need an ace in the hole "mines Harvey"

since you're being vague, i'll just inform folks that you were talking about me. i was joking, if people get that bent out of shape on a forum full of thousands of posts a day, then thats taking it all a bit too seriously.

if i were a troll, i wouldnt post under my real full name, i would use a partial name or an alias like %99 of the members here use to post under.

Anyways, to make this post relevant to the "topic of the thread" as you folks call it:

all 3 movies use Swat members, a step up from the typical law enforcement.

all 3 movies use an aircraft. (helicopters, jets, the bat)

all 3 movies feature Batman atop a building, in a semi-circle shot, which was shot via aerial photography.

all 3 movies had no second unit (miniature unit doesnt count, as they dont film actors)

all 3 movies END on a "cliffhanger" of sorts (begins was the joker card, Dark Knight batmans fate, and Rises the fate of the persona)

obvious mirrors:
Blake and Bruces "cave discovery".
Ra's (liam) saying Ra's (watanbe) lines in Rises in the Pit.
Bruce and the Joker both throwing out their alcohol, Bruce and the Joker both making a grand entrance into the Dent fundraiser asking "where is harvey dent?", both being met by a Rachel with her arms crossed.

(they also reused all swat and police cars from begins to rises, as well as the uniforms)

Wow, I always knew there was a cards/poker motif in TDK, but when you list all the references like that it's really apparent. Nice stuff guys.

In BB, Alfred breaks a cowl with a hammer.

In TDKR, Brane breaks the cowl with his fist.

I'm wondering if they did that on purpose in order to make us realize how brutal Bane is.

In Begins, Bruce throw his gun in the water before "visits" Falcone and leave Gotham.
In Rises, Blake did the same with his badge, after Batman saved the city.

The scene in TDK where Bruce look closely to Dent at the bunker kinda remembers him researching about Selina in Rises.

Blake also throws the gun away after killing the guys, I thought that was supposed to be yet another parallel with Bruce throwing away the gun.

In TDKR, we saw Stryver falling through the cracked ice as well. Except, he didn't survived.

TDK:
HARVEY DENT: Well, fair's fair. [draws coin] Heads I'll take it, tails it's all yours.
RACHEL DAWES Oh yeah? You want to flip a coin to see who leads?

TDKR:
TRADER 2: You can’t short the stock because Bruce Wayne goes to a party

TRADER 1: Wayne coming back is change. Change is either good or bad.

TRADER 2: On what basis?

TRADER 1: I flipped a coin.

In TDKR, one of the mercenaries was holding and checking at the bat tranquilizing dart while Gordon and his men were sent to the ice.

I didn't notice the green stuff! Continuity!
And is that falafel?

Also, what I found interesting is that RAS advised Bruce to control his anger, or it would destroy him; in TDKR, in the pit, Bruce says **** it : " I'm angry "

Another interesting thing is that Bruce was told that vengeance and justice arent the same thing; Talia pretends to bring justice, but is ultimately killed by here desire of vengeance

I think vengeance and justice are so much important for the themes of this series. And of Batman in general. In his bloodlust he's always saying that "he is vengeance, the night" etc. but even wayy back in BTAS we had Heart of Darkness where Batman distinguishes between the two: Freeze says that it is all vendetta and Batman responds: "No... justice." In Mask of the Phantasm he asks Andrea "what will vengeance solve?" Nolan reiterates those points throughout the trilogy. Harvey becomes a "vigilante" when he's bent on vengeance, etc.

But as for that Anger bit -- I always felt like that was a response to Thomas Wayne. Remember how he told him "don't be afraid" at his death-bed in Crime Alley? It took Bruce all these years to come back with an answer: "I'm not afraid. I'm angry."

I saw a thread comparing Bane to Darth Vader. In the Dark Knight Trilogy, Nolan's version of the League of Assassins--his League of Shadows--reminds me of the Galactic Empire from Star Wars.
