The implication was that his wife is still alive, and that while they still love each other, they have to be apart in order to protect her

It wasn't an implication, they showed us she was alive lol.

Well, most movies take their cues from James Bond in regards to love interests in sequels.
Skyfall was a good movie, but honestly, the Mission Impossible films have really owned Bond in recent years. And I say this as a Bond fan. The action has been better for starters. The daring stunts of holding onto planes and climbing skyscrapers used to be the Bond franchise's bread and butter - eg. bunjee jumping and skiing off mountains. Tom Cruise, in his love of Charlie Chaplin, has truly kept this spirit alive. Bond still has this mindset in places, but it's just not the same. The humor in Mission Impossible has also been more apparent without breaking the serious atmosphere, and the extended cast has been solid.

She's alive and they're separated as seen in that brief ending in Ghost Protocol. Before he get's the Rogue Nation mission.

I have pretty much loved every Mission Impossible flick other then the second. But I wouldn't take any of them over Casino Royale and Skyfall. Especially Casino Royale.

That Burj khalifa scene was definitely a Bond thing, though that's owed more to Brad Bird more than anything.

It's a genius sequence. The wire descent in the first film is iconic, but for my money, the Ghost Protocol scene is better.

I rank the series like this:

Ghost Protocol
Rogue Nation
Mission Impossible
Mission Impossible 3
Mission Impossible 2

Why you dissing my boy John Woo like this? Did you not see the bike sequence?

Honestly the one time that they tried to make it more overtly Bond-ian, was with part II. And that was the weakest one. Because they're not the same, and trying to make them such doesn't work.

Yeah, but I think that trope needs to change. It works in Bond films because he's supposed to be a womanizer but Ethan Hunt is a bit different. Plus, he got married in one of the movies, even though that's more or less been forgotten now, I guess. Regardless though, even though Hunt has what appears to be romantic chemistry with Ferguson's character, they never actually hook up, and I honestly don't think they need to. Female leads can do more than just hook up with male leads, and that's what they should continue doing with her.

Yeah Maggie Q, Paula Patton, and Rebecca Ferguson weren't love interests (also Ethan is married still). So the Bond thing doesn't work on that level either. And it gets even more awkward since they keep doing everyone possible to get Rhames, Pegg, and Renner back for these films.

Tweeted by Cavill's agent. Guess he's in MI6.

Is Ferguson reprising her role? If so... Calling it now... He's Ferguson's former flame who the MI team has to rescue only it turns out he's in league with the baddies or is the main bad guy. I guarantee at least one scene where Cruise and he duke it out shirtless.

Surprising piece of casting.

Whatever one thinks of UNCLE, I thought it was fine except for the villains which ultimately held the film back greatly, Cavill in that makes a good case for himself in these types of films.

I hope he brings out a more fleshed out character compared to his man from UNCLE portrayal.

His performance was really wooden.

Well it's looking like hiring a new agent was the best move Henry has ever made. As someone who loved his performances in MoS, The Tudors, UNCLE and even Immortals, this is some awesome news. Wonder if he's playing a villain; that might be cool.

He really wasn't. He was actually doing a fairly accurate portrayal of the Robert Vaughn original but had charm wit and charisma. Solo's deal was that he was unflappable. That film, the parts with the protagonists, was a lot of fun for me. The villains were simply bland and forgettable.

rumor has it henry is the villain

I say make him simply a villainous Bond type. We're never gonna see Hunt Vs Bond so might as well go that route with the badguy.

Again... If Ferguson returns I expect her character and Cavs to have a past of some kind.

People say this, but I don't get it at all. He isn't wooden at all in UNCLE imo. It is almost like people are applying his Superman to his role there.
