I loved Ilsa to death, more than Ethan to be sure, but I agree that Tom Cruise IS this franchise (or at least this incarnation of it), as much as Matt Damon is the Bourne franchise. As that franchise just learned, to continue the series in the same world with (some of) the same characters but minus him would be a mistake. Not that I don't think it could be good - I think it could be great - but I just don't think it would bring in the audiences the way these do, no matter how well-received the other characters have been. At the end of the day, they are well-received supporting players - their draw power as the main attraction is untested and if history tells us anything about trying to turn popular supporting characters into franchise leads (Jack Sparrow, Elektra, Aldous Snow, etc) it's that it usually doesn't go well. Unless they're cartoons ala Minions and Puss in Boots, I guess, lol.

When Cruise is done, they just need to do a complete reboot, imo.

That said, I am ALL FOR Ilsa taking the center stage supporting role again in another one of these, as long as the plot and her role in it are different enough that it doesn't feel like a retread. Let her keep being the show-stealer. She can still go down as one of the all-time great female action heroes without carrying the franchise solo.

This is Tom Cruise's franchise. Who is he going to pass the torch to? Jeremy Renner? Are you kidding me? They gave him a starring role in an established franchise and he left it in shambles.

I don't think they even need to replace Tom Cruise or pass the torch to someone. This isn't like Spider-Man or Batman that need or should have a reboot after several years. Plus like the other posters said Tom Cruise is Mission: Impossible. Yeah it was originally a TV show but Tom Cruise has been part of this series since the 90s... I think he's simply irreplaceable and I don't want a reboot if Cruise eventually stops making more MI films.

To this franchise, once Phelps was gone , that was it .

I doubt we will see any of his compatriots in the films.

But it is a missed opportunity.
Martin Landau and Barbara Bain are still around, as is Peter Lupus .

The possibilities are there.

I would LOVE to see these characters played by the originals.
Barbara Bain has always reprised Cinnamon Carter in an episode of Diagnosis Murder some years back.

As for the future of the franchise, I think it can eventually carry on even if Cruise has to retire to Secretary. Get a new up and coming action star to take his place. For now, though, definitely bring back Ilsa in a major role. She was a great addition.

And for directors, I'd love to see the Russo Bros. take on an installment, but for now they're probably too busy with Avengers.

There aren't really a lot of young actors now comparable to Cruise's age in 1996. Unless we're looking to get Channing Tatum, Zac Efron, Kellan Lutz, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, etc.

They obviously wouldn't go after Vin Diesel or The Rock. Chris Pratt is juggling three franchises at this point. Jason Statham has his franchises.

They wouldn't try Affleck, Damon, Clooney, DiCaprio, and Pitt lost his chance. Cavill's already doing UNCLE and is rumored for Bond.

I mean, literally, Cruise is the only man for the job.


I do think Keanu would fit right in, though. Maybe even Jason Momoa.

As for replacing/recasting Cruise, it's pretty pointless to be thinking about that now, as Cruise will be doing this for some time. Whoever the cast as him/his replacement in far future films will likely be someone we'd never think of or even know today.

Re-watched Ghost Protocol last night. Evert time I see Josh Holloway I just kinda imagine what it would have been like if Pitt had been cast as Hanaway, as an in-joke reference to the fact that he nearly replaced Cruise.

I actually would love to see an Ilsa Faust spinoff film starring Rebecca Ferguson. She's off doing her own thing, and then maybe Cruise cameos near/at the end as Ethan Hunt (to set up the next "main" MI film)? That could potentially work.

I'd kind of like them to take a break from the whole "the IMF gets dissolved/goes rogue" thing for awhile. Not that it isn't cool, but we've done it in TWO straight films now. Let the IMF actually be the IMF for awhile.

RN sets up Alec Baldwin's Hunley to be the new Secretary of the IMF at the end.

But if they were going to do a Female head (which I wouldn't be opposed to), someone like Jodie Foster or Julianne Moore or Sigourney Weaver would be quite interesting imo.
