Having rewatched Ghost Protocol the other day, they actually set up this movie. Ethan's briefing at the end of the film mentions The Syndicate by name (you have to listen closely to hear it though). So it sets up the idea that he was tracking them the whole time in-between films (which couldn't have been too long given what we're shown/told here).
Yep, that's been discussed here, though it makes more sense to me now, knowing McQuarrie was brought on as an uncredited writer on that film. That was probably his doing, planting the seed for his installment.

Indeed. Anyone know of any special store-exclusives for this with extra features?

Then why the IMF didn't believe the existence of The Syndicate in Rogue Nation when they are the ones that gave Ethan the mission in the first place in Ghost Protocol?

To those that seen it. Was it better than Ghost protocol? Ghost Protocal was my least favorite in the series and hoping Rogue Nation is better.

Is difficult to tell you because for most people Ghost Protocol is probably the best. It is, for me. So I don't know what to tell ya. Just watch it and have your own opinions.

I've got a co-worker who hated GP as well, I was completely shocked like "Wha?"

His main complaints from what I remember were that Jeremy Renner sucked balls and added nothing to the movie, it was all Tom Cruise, and that it was highly overrated. He said he only liked 3 and a little of 2 but I figured 4 was easily an enjoyable movie for anyone who liked some of these movies.

The IMF didn't doubt it - the CIA did. You'll recall in the message the Syndicate first makes for Ethan in the beginning that they say "IMF suspects this was the same organization you've been tracking..." So yeah, sounded like Ethan and the IMF were on the same page the whole time. CIA just used the lack of leadership in the current IMF to paint a false narrative because Ethan hadn't been able to provide hard evidence of their existence yet.

In my opinion, yes, RN is better, especially from a screenplay standpoint. But then, I also loved Ghost Protocol - and still far and away prefer it to the installments that came before - so you could very well feel differently.

Saying that GP was "all Tom Cruise" is puzzling to me. I mean I could definitely understand that complaint for the previous films. But for GP and RN? No, I just don't see it. His role in that movie was basically "be the leader, do crazy stunts," with a little bit of drama involving his wife (but that's in the background for most of the movie). In terms of actual character-work, Renner and (to a lesser degree) Paula Patton got the most. Just like here, in terms of character-work, Rebecca Ferguson and (to a lesser degree) Simon Pegg got the most.

The IMF DID believe in The Syndicate. It was the CIA that didn't. And since CIA Director Alec Baldwin got the IMF disbanded and the CIA put in charge, it made that problem all the more apparent.

They better bring back Patton, or maybe even Maggie Q.

I think the Syndicate reference was more of a throwaway line, being used a coda for the film.

Maggie was boring action woman, can't see the appeal.

She'd be good as the "utility member" of the squad, who doesn't draw a lot of attention but just gets **** done. I imagine having a character who can (presumably) speak Mandarin (her character in MI3 is only shown speaking Cantonese) would be an asset to the intelligence team.

I wouldn't mind all 3 coming back personally, but as long as Ferguson comes back I am a happy bunny, she as awesome in RN.

Watch Nikita and you'll see what Maggie's appeal is (Lyndsey Fonseca's as well). She didn't get all that much to do in MI: III.

Ahhhh yes yes. You're right. I get it now.

Thanks for the replies! That gives me hope lol I'm excited to see it. Mission Impossible 3 was my favorite MI film. GP was a big step down in my opinion. So the positive I'm hearing from RN is giving me hope. Thanks again.

All you Ferguson fans better jump on that Snowman book wagon asap. Her character is so good. She will chew her scenes over Fassy, believe that. Oscar nom guaranteed.

Looks like the special features for the bluray are pretty barebones. Which is a shame, GP had a great bluray treatment and making of featurette. Either way it's gonna be nice to watch that car and motorcycle chase on loop.

Yeah she is going to be another memorable character/performance if they can pull it off.
