We've all asked ourselves what we'd do in an apocalyptic, survival-at-all-costs scenario at one point or another. Usually, that scenario has something to do with a societal collapse, a viral pandemic, or zombies--most often some combination of the three.

On the other hand, most of us haven't come up with any ideas for what to do when the threat isn't something that can be vaccinated or shotgunned. When the stampeding mob isn't composed of mindless corpses or mutants, but regular people scared out of their heads. When the end of everything you know comes at the hands of something vast, powerful...and very much alive.

Inspired by giant monster/disaster movies like Cloverfield (as well as the classics like Godzilla and King Kong) MONSTROUS puts players on the streets in the thick of a giant monster attack. It pits players' survival instincts to the ultimate test, the decisions they make and their ability to react to the unexpected making the difference between life and death. In a city gripped with panic and besieged by an unstoppable creature, there is only one objective: make it out alive.

RULES:

-The party will consist of player-created characters, while the Monster will be controlled by the GM. As the game progresses, the GM will also feed the party vital information via news reports and various NPCs, as well as stage major encounters and hazards for the players to deal with along the way.

-Similar to the Hype Horrors RPG, your character is encouraged to be a fictionalized extension of yourself. You can play as a created identity, of course, but the idea here is to test your own survival skills, not what stuff you can throw at the monster. You have no super-powers, no army of elite robot soldiers, no secret weapon that just happens to be the monster's weakness. Just your wits and your guts--and try not to lose either of those.

-No killing other party members, unless A) the survival of the rest of the party depends on it, and B) you PM the player in question and get their permission to do so.

-To add that extra element of chaos that would come with a whole city being destroyed, every day that the game is active, the GM will throw in a random encounter. These will be selected by the GM via dice-roll and a corresponding 'encounter table' (which will be prepared before the game starts), and may consist of anything from a simple car-crash, to a party member being eaten by the Monster itself. Only the GM knows what the potential encounters will be, so as to keep the party on their toes. In the event that the random encounter involves a party member dying, the player will be notified via PM and can ask for a re-roll to see if he/she survives.
(this is purely an experimental element; if it does not work or if enough players are against it, it will be scrapped)

-The game ends once the party is either out of the city, or has been wiped out.

-All other standard Hype RPG rules apply.

-Have fun!

Dice-roll encounters, eh? Sounds interesting.

MONSTROUS RPG SIGN-UP FORM:

Player's Screenname: Master Bruce

Character's Name: Alex Campbell

Character's "speech" text: Navy, Bold Verdana

Occupation: Post-college graduate looking for an internship

Bio/Personality/Relevant Information: Alex had never been to the Big Apple in his life. A small town kid looking for bigger and better things, he thought he'd find them in college. But fate had other plans, as the only major he could salvage was a growing skill in computer graphics. Coming to Manhattan to apply for an internship at a big name company, Alex feels hopeful that he's finally on a breakthrough to mold his future.

Little does he know of the big things - literally - that lie ahead of him.

Gear: (I.E. what does the character carry with him/her that may come in handy? And please be somewhat realistic) Backpack fitted to carry a wireless laptop, along with a bottle of water, digital organizer, several ballpoint pens, and of course, his own personal resume.

What? He's trying to get a job, not fight randomly appearing giant lizards...

How often do you plan on posting in this RPG?: I did pretty well (for me) in the Zombie RPG, so given this is bound to be similar, I'd say twice a day at most.

Before he could realize it, Kyle was living a life that he hated.

His articles on the loved ones affected by the 9/11 tradgedy earned him a Pulitzer Prize, and his latest article on a series of arsons is under consideration for another award. He's a dogged reporter who loves to get a scoop and won't stop until he's got his story.

How long will we go about our lives before the monster starts ****ing **** up?

Most likely just long enough to get your characters established and then get most of you into the same place. The game will probably start around mid-day, while the attack itself will be that night (in-game time, not IRL time).

Gallagher is APPROVED, btw.

Gonna give it a couple more days to see if any stragglers sign up, before putting up the IC Thread.

The game goes live, Thursday night!

Okay, so I'm going to apply, but I have a question.

How far from the truth am I allowed to stray when making up my character? Like, should I try to be as close to myself as I can while still taking some creative license, or am I allowed to actually create a character? (He's not a superhero or anything, but he's very much far from being me)

You can create a character to be any kind of personality you want; I just suggested keeping it close to yourself for the sake of making your actions more natural.

The character I had in mind is a middle aged enforcer for a New York crime family. I, on the other hand, am an 18 year old student from Iceland. Would this fly?

Note that, even if you don't allow it, I'll still be signing up.

I'd go with a new character.

We all know Icelanders are the first to die in monster attacks.

If only there were more monster attacks...

Seeing as how I turned myself from a reporter from a small market radio station into a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter for the Post, I think whatever you have planned can be accepted.

It'd be an interesting character for this sorta setting. Get an app up, and I'll take a look at it.
