Most Overrated Movies You've Seen

What? Rocky shouldn't be lumped in other Stallone film. Its a film that about more than boxing Stallone's only solid dramatic role.

They made too many and they were boooooooring. The only thing Rocky invented was the montage.

-Signs, 6th Sense..... Anything M Night (People are finally realizing what Ive known forever. The man is a hack and got lucky once)

Hahaha! Bull **** but alright...

First off, people really do need to read up on the actual definition of the word hack. Just because someone makes movies you disliked or hated in no way means that they are a hack. Which film are you referring to when he "got lucky once"? My guess is The 6th Sense but I think Unbreakable is easily his best film.

-True Lies (A truly stupid movie)

It wasn't meant to be super serious. It was supposed to be an action/comedy and it's not the movie's fault if people didn't get that. Just like how a few of my friends thought Hudson Hawk was a supposed to be a serious movie that turned out horrible, and didn't get how obvious it was that it was purposefully over the top and silly.

-Avatar (Words like hate and loathe arent strong enough words for how I feel about this piece of crap. I cant believe this is the same guy who did Aliens- one of the greatest scripts in film history - and Terminator. Cameron is definitely following in Lucas footsteps)

While I found Avatar fun, it was in fact average or mediocre in regards to the story and dialogue but saying Aliens has one of the greatest scripts in film history is, well...ridiculous.

-Star Trek09 (Like Avatar, hate & loathe arent strong enough words.

Are you a hardcore Trekkie or did you just never care for Star Trek and found the remake to be just as bad?

I'm curious as to what movies you actually do like that got a lot of praise.

It's odd, I still dont understand how you could find XMEN2 and SM2 garbage . Hell even being infuriated by the proceeding of XMEN3 and SM3 i still couldn't label them garbage.

Movies so full of plot holes you could drive a bus through them. I cannot get over lazy film making, yes they are comic movies but I cannot forgive lazy film making.

quick example then i gotta go see piranha 3d which I am sure sucks

dock ock us supposed to have peter parker pass on a message to spider-man and have spider-man meet him (ock) somewhere, so what does he do to get parker's attention? not knowing he is spider-man he throws a freaking car at him from behind which of course would have killed him. then when the car and parker do not meet, he slams parker into a brick wall after he delivers his message.

The fight at the end, spider-man and ock are in waist deep water battling it out yet when they need ock to save the day and take down the gravity field, the water he was just waist deep in somehow manages to become bottomless.

i could go on, but i have a hard time overlooking things like this where if they took a little more time on the script, they could have turned out a better movie. raimi is almost becoming a hack in my opinion. He has made very few movies I enjoy - directing and producing, mainly producing.

To me, Inception was never about the ending, is just refreshing to see a original movie that happens to be a smart (in the way it is presented) blockbuster for a while in Hollywood that is made to make you think, not only about the ending, but the layers of themes and ideas and in a way, morals that Nolan woven into the story. And a addition to that from the direction to the cast is also great.
Yes. Inception isn't about a twist ending or pulling the rug up from under the audience.

A Clockwork Orange - I'm a huge Kubrick fan (I think he was one of the all-time great filmmakers) but I hated A Clockwork Orange. I just didn't see the masterpiece that so many of my fellow Kubrick junkies had promised.

Movies that jump out at me from the last couple years are Pan's Labyrinth and There Will Be Blood. One had some impressive visuals and the other's star would go on to win an Oscar, but I never cared at all about anything happening in either film.

The first example , I'm kinda tired to think , idk it could of been that his tentacles were so vicious they didnt give a damn and would act on their own , they might not of had the same motives . Either that or it's an overlooked plot hole . Kind of like the Joker driving his bus out in sync with other buses through a bank wall in TDK.

The second example could of been they were standing on a platform that fell apart I remember the place was flooding/sinking .

Raimi's Drag me to Hell was awesome. I like most of the movies he has directed but not some of the films he was a producer on.

Em, he does not 'throw a car at Peter Parker from behind', he is charging down the street causing chaos trying to get Spider-man's attention, while he is on his way to try to find Parker in the vicinity where he lives. He does not know Parker is in that cafe when he throws the car through the window, he only sees him once the window is smashed and he and Mj walk to the window to see what the hell is happening.

Throwing him against the wall? Yeah, he is a super-powered nutcase, who is half human half AI, he is showing Parker he means business, he's pretty crazy and careless, but still it's not enough to kill the guy. Just shake him up, possibly ko him, but again, he is an out of control nut!

The fight at the end, spider-man and ock are in waist deep water battling it out yet when they need ock to save the day and take down the gravity field, the water he was just waist deep in somehow manages to become bottomless.

whut? they are still in the abandoned building that is half sunk in the water, it's abandoned *because* it is half sunk in the water.

It sounds more like you have a hard time understanding what is going on in the movie, as opposed to the film-makers being the ones with the problem.

Quirky, dirty, and witty/high brow humor. Lebowski was not high brow humor nor witty in any sense. It was just dry and boring. I love Best In Show because it is quirky and it is very dry and the characters in that movie were a lot better and a lot funnier. Same for Groundhog Day.

It felt like I needed to be a stoner to even care for Bridges...which is one of the reasons why I don't like Seth Rogen.

The Big Lebowski is a dumb comedy made by very intelligent people, the characters may be dumb, but the jokes and comedic timing are very smart.

and thinking you need to be a stoner to like the main character...I'm kind of dumbfounded by that statement.

It deserves all it's plaudits, and is probably the Coen Bros best movie, i just wish i had not given my dvd away as a last minute christmas gift so i could watch it right now.
The s/track is awesome too, a great compilation album to bang on.

and the scene i would say was the highlight, and made me laugh the most, was when they go round to that kid's house like a pair of detectives interogating him, with the subsequent attack on the car outside by Goodman. That was based on a real life incident involving one of their friends. When his car was stolen he went round to this kid's house after finding his homework in the car.

It is just a great piece of filmaking as well, the dream sequence/musical segment with 'I just checked in to check what condition my condition was in', is just sublime.

Watch it again when you are older.

I am 25...I am old enough:dry:

It is not the coen brothers best movie......................

How are the jokes smart?

The Dude: Walter... what am I going to tell Lebowski?
Walter Sobchak: I told that **** down at the league office... who's in charge of scheduling?
The Dude: Walter...
Donny: Burkhalter.
Walter Sobchak: I told that kraut a ****ing thousand times that I don't roll on Shabbos!
The Dude: Walter...
Donny: They already posted it.
Walter Sobchak: Well they can ****ing unpost it!
The Dude: Who gives a ****! They're gonna kill that poor woman, man! What am I gonna tell Lebowski?
Walter Sobchak: C'mon Dude, eventually she'll get sick of her little game and, you know, wander on back.
Donny: How come you don't roll on Saturday, Walter?
Walter Sobchak: I'm shomer shabbos.
Donny: What's that?
The Dude: Yeah, and in the meantime, what do I tell Lebowski?
Walter Sobchak: Saturday, Donny, is Shabbos, the Jewish day of rest. That means that I don't work, I don't drive a car, I don't ****ing ride in a car, I don't handle money, I don't turn on the oven, and I sure as **** don't ****ing roll!
Donny: Sheesh.
Walter Sobchak: Shomer shabbos!
The Dude: Walter, how am I going to...
Walter Sobchak: Shomer ****ing shabbos.
The Dude: Oh **** it. I'm out of here.
Walter Sobchak: Come on, Dude...
Walter Sobchak: ****ing BABY...

Sooo smart.....*cough* I will agree that their timing is good.

Lewbowski is an unusual film. The first time I saw it, I didn't see what the big deal was... I liked it, but I didn't find it particularly memorable. But some then I watched it again at the insistence of a friend who said that the film actually got funnier with repeat viewings. Usually, when people say things like this, I find it to be bullsh** but in the case of The Big Lebowski, he was right. Once I saw it a second time, I damn near fell in love with the movie.

I'm not talking about your age per se, but if you are saying things like you think that you have to be a stoner to care for Bridge's character, then it suggests that this may a case of years down the line you come back to the movie having developed a finer appreciation for intelligent 'dumb' films.

That is not a joke, that is dialoge that lends itslef well to characterisation, what it does is tell you something about Goodman's crazy, unreasonable methods of thinking.
I don't even know if that Shaboos thing is a real Jewish thing, it doesn't sound like it.
not all comedies have punchline jokes like the Naked Gun, some of them conjure up humour through showing ridiculous people with ridiculous ways of living and beliefs about life, that's kind of what is going on here, and goes on a lot in the movie.
when I said 'joke' i was talking in the broader sense of everything in the movie being one big joke, it is, the lead characters, the situations, it's great comedy.
and it has v funny, but simple little running jokes like Goodman's character telling Buscemi's to 'shut the f*** up donny.' everytime he tries to say something, that is just funny, it's an exagration of the kind of thing that goes on in real life between people, or y'know, that kind of thing can go on exactly like that i imagine in some rare eccentric cases.

That is all the movie is...dialog like that.

I will agree with your statement that it is a smart dumb comedy. Although that is an oxymoron, it is about dumb people but delivers their idiocy with an intelligence approach. It is just boring to me.

Well that's a major disappointment, though I'd barely consider Pan's Labyrinth to be 'overrated'. If anything, It's an underrated movie as far as the general public is concerned.

Same thing happened to me. First viewing, i thought it was borderline stupid. But a friend insisted on watching it again, and it got funnier and funnier. At this point, I can pretty much recite the entire movie. Love it.

I have only watched it once...maybe I need to watch it again.

Yeah, i really think the movie deserves repeat viewings. Especially if you weren't fond of it the first time (weird, i know). It truely does get better, because you understand what the movie is, and what it isn't, and that allows you to let go of preconceived notions and lets you enjoy all the weird little quirks. Its one of the very few movies that i love more and more with each viewing.

Maybe you just didn't like it. That's okay. I don't like The Big Lebowski either. And I'm a fan of the Coen Brothers. Fans of that film think its great and they won't accept an opposing view. My best buddy actually lets it bother him that I don't like that film. I just have to laugh.

I have to disagree. I was barraged with glowing reviews of Pan's Labyrinth from people I know and anonymous folks all over the internet after it was released. I thought it was very average. I will say, I'm not usually a fan of dark fantasy, strange creatures, and other things that Guillermo Del Toro can't seem to get past as a filmmaker, so I kind of expected not to be blown away, but I was quite underwhelmed by the film. I'd give it a C+, but I keep hearing what a masterpiece it is. That's why I consider it overrated.

Well I don't think friends and people on the internet account for the general public, and Im not exactly sure what expectations you had for it to be underwhelming. Underwhelming as what? A war film? A fantasy film?

I also wouldn't call it a masterpiece because that term gets thrown around like candy these days. I'd avoid praise for a film that labels it as a 'masterpiece'

How are those overrated?

Aside from us film geeks on the internet, I haven't heard of too many members of the GA going out in droves to see it when it was in the theatre as well as discussing it often shortly after it's release.

I can understand if you're calling it overrated just with film geeks in mind but I think this thread should cover a film's popularity or hype across ALL filmgoers.

Rosemary's Baby

I'm a huge Horror fan...and this is supposedly one of the best horror movies ever...and I couldnt get through it.

Plus, the director rapes children, so it loses points on that alone.

Best thing about Rosemary's Baby is Ruth Gordon's performance as Minnie Casstevete. She was brilliant. Won an Oscar for that role.

The Big Lebowski is one of those rare movies that gets much better with repeated viewings. Not sure why? Maybe it catches people off guard the first time they see it.

its not about the writing on the page, but how the actors play it out on screen. i find that movie funnier every time i watch it.
