Reader Review : The Punisher : War Zone Script!
Date : November 19, 2007 Writer : Ramius

By Kent

The Punisher has always been my favorite comic book hero. He couldn’t fly; he didn’t have super powers, but what he lacked in style he made up for with sheer brutality. The comics were laced with pitch black humor and over the top violence. What also made this man interesting was the fact that he was a stone’s throw away from becoming a bad guy himself. Lucky for us, the Punisher was always on our side.

I enjoyed the 1989 version starring Dolph Lundgren that was shot in Sydney. Sure, it wasn’t perfect but in comparison to the bigger budgeted 2004 version, it was friggin’ “Titanic”!!!

I know a lot of folks like the Tom Jane as Frank Castle version. I thought it was too soft.

This 100 page draft, written by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, Kurt Sutter

Frank prowls the mean dark streets of New York…and the character and the film will be much better for it.

Frank is played as a tragic figure, not a shut- in like Jane’s, but more like Mad Max in the Road Warrior. He’s cold, mean and unapologetic…and he’s got NO time for people. His relationship with Microchip is interesting. Wayne Knight from Seinfeld could be a real surprise in this. He’s not just some dumb sidekick for Frank. He has some neat little moments that provide reason behind why people like them would become vigilantes.

Sure, it doesn’t feel wholly original, but it works in the context of the film and the character – while these guys are doing all their fancy moves, Frank brings them down with a couple of grenades. A nice Punisher moment. And there’s no “God’s gonna sit this one out punchline.” Phew!!!!!

There’s also several other core “Punisher moments” like gunbattles and explosions. In one particular nasty scene, a bad guy is blown up but remains intact…or so we think. When he talks to one of his fellow scumbags, we discover he’s got an armful of his own intestines. Nice!!!

If you were disappointed by the fact that the only real action scene in the 2004 version was the shootout at the end, prepare to be blown away. Every action sequence in this script is ten times better than that.

that's sound cool like it should be. except the sewer parts.

I hope the battle van is in there or some other kind of assualt vehicle.

do you know any thing on that shadowVoyd?

The sewer thing isn't that bad, for all we know, there might be abandoned and inactive segments of the sewers? Thats not so far fetched is it?

Thinking of that though, he'd probably find more space in the subway tunnels, I know I've seen a documentary with a whole little civilization of bums living in the New York subway system!

What upsets me more profoundly is death by lobster... I mean wtf, I think I remember something to that effect in the comics, but for him to say the 04 was too goofy, and not mention the idiotic implications of that... I don't know...

Plus the cliched inclusion of "bait" characters is too bad, but his temporary grief over killing a fed doesn't sound drawn out.

But with the intel Frank has, could this even happen? Has it happened often in the comics?

The hideouts in the MAX issues usually look like sewers anyway.

I just hope this punisher doesn't let someone sing and play a gutair
while frank sits there like a chump.

this script suggests if that sitution happen in this movie frank would do the right thing.

shoot the dude and continue eating his breakfast.

Frank shouldn't be out and about eating in public diners anyways.

Eat in the sewers, build up that good ole immune system!

I think its time to move on from that.

**** the sewers...

I want to see.,

a.) Warehouse in Queens

B.) Battlevan (1979 Ford Econoline)

Yea, what the Hell was that about? And Frank let him go??? You know, now that I really think about it, that movie was dumb as Hell.

moving on...........

So you'd rather Frank risk innocent lives in the diner with a gunbattle or any kind of violence, when all the other man's done is play the guitar?

[YT]PGR-lbRJOAw[/YT] How many innocents (besides Joan, Bumpo and Dave) do you see here?

Two things make me discredits this guy's taste.

To my fellow hardcore action-nuts out there, put this with Rambo as one of 2008’s must see pictures.

Not big on the retcon idea adding the daughter in the mix.

And complaining about the first one taking place in Tampa just sounds like he like a baby.

One shot is all frank would need!
what gun battle ?
there's no gun in the other dudes hand he's playing a gutair & singing and mocking the death of his family!

you act like it was a crowded restarant it was him, the lame assasin, the 2 regects and the waitress. and they were at the counter far away!

That clip just made me puke! like it did in 2004!

I really love it when that asassin come up to frank and gets smart with him. get real when he came and got in his face the punisher would have put a fork in his eye!

one shot!!
that's all!:hyper:

so let's hope the Punisher rocks this time!
to make up for that junk!

if you like that garbage eat it up!
I like the punisher in the ennis "max series."

I bet you liked those 2 bufoons in the movie too right!

I think I'll take microchip though!

Yes, he didn't have a gun, it was a guy playing guitar, who was no threat what so ever to Frank, for all he knew it he's just some weirdo. And the lyrics to the song, do not mock the death of his family.

I can hear what you're thinking,
All your doubts and fears,
And if you look in my eyes, in time you'll find,
The reason I'm here.

And in time all things shall pass away,
In time, you may come back someday.
To live once more, or die once more,
But in time, your time will be no more.

Also, lay off the bold and learn proper grammer.

If it works for the Ninja Turtles, it'll work for Frank.

I think the stuff about Frank having a daughter is dumb. I don't care if you're going for the closeness of the comics but it'll basically say "**** Thomas Jane and the first movie." Now, I am one of the few and the proud who loved both the theatrical and director's cut version of the 04' film and I don't want a reboot or a remake. This should be just what it is, a sequel. Otherwise, the script sounds good.

I rather they respect the actual source material then pay respects to a sub-par movie that felt itself in a position to tamper with established continuity and didn't even deliver a good movie as a result.

Is there a reason your text is that size? You're coming off as about ten years old.

Fine...Frank opens fire, Frank gets arrested for murder, Frank goes to jail.

Once again...all the other man did was play the guitar. That's it. Frank isn't justified in killing him at that point. At all. Even if he's pseudo-insane Punisher.

How many times have you been on the run from the law, vowed to avenge your family's death by getting rid of some heavily connected people. Your on edge, your eggs are runny, Joan wont stop staring at you, and your at a constant state of alertness. All of a sudden some cowboy walks in, sings you a song, about your eventual death, yet you let him walk out, when it would have saved that gorgeous car from being tottaled in (the shortest car scene in film ever!!!) Now examine the idocracy of letting a man live who implied in a song that he will kill you. No, if i was this dope ass FBI agent who fought in Iraq, I would have bullet knifed that mutha***a before he got to the words...

"IN TIME."

Or if I didnt want to hear Joan scream, and SpackerDave dickride me for killing a cowboy, I would have followed that bozo outside instead of letting him get the drop on me!!!!!! [EDIT]Look at how our friend Mr. Schwarzenegger killed that assassin who escorted him on the plane in Commando!!! "Awe he's sleeping!"

"And in Ti--- ACK!!!!!"

And I don't care if you liked the song, that was the dumbest most illogical scene ever!!!!! I wanted to stand up and scream what the Hell, but the fanboy in me was too excited to see his favorite superhero on film. That movie was dumb, and I half expected Travolta to either dance or scream....

MR COTTER! MR. COTTER!!!

werd. i think it's cool that they changed it to actually match his origin. will they say he's a vietnam vet too? :woot:

the text is definitely unnecessary. and frank definitely did not have any reason to kill the guy right then and there, he posed no threat. playing guitar isn't a crime, as far as i know.

I pray everyday they use his Vietnam/SheepMeadow Central Park storyline! Please no more cop angle! CENTRAL PARK!!!

Your the reason I text large!
but it still can't get through to you!!!!! and citizen pain?

How many times does "ObakeTora" have to put the video up for you guys?

There is that better? do you guys read the comics at all?
do you think the punisher would have lasted 2 days in the New York
(not miami with MR C.) without being able to read a guys moves and have good street smarts.
that guy gets in his face and basically say I'm going to Kill you Castle!

But I'm sure you meet TJ at some comic convention so your loyal to him no matter how bad that movie was!

as travolta would say "up your nose with a rubber hose." Mr. C

I'd love to have the Vietnam angle, it was just such a soul crushing war, that you could automatically understand how it might of help push Castle over the edge.
Crap man, they could make a movie out of the Born miniseries to have set this movie up just to really put the fear of Frank in people.

Bubonic,

Right on point about the fanboys, it's because of Jane they nixed the Central Park angle (AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and not very many people complained about it. I'm sick of hearing about Jane, its because of his boyish looks and smile they altered the Punisher's origin. The Central Park massacre was the main reason that attracted me to the Punisher, not this eye for an eye crap flick. You could have a good Vietnam war flashback, and yes you can have ****ing BORN!!! On screen! Maybe this incarnation will make enough money to warrant a Born translation. You gotta admit (if done right) it could rival all the classics. Meh!

Or because they didn't have enough of a budget to even shoot in Canada let alone Central Park. And If they couldn't shoot the Kuwait opening for the first film, chances are very ****ing slim that they would be able to do a 'Nam flashback.

This movie isn't looking good, casting aside. Hooligans was pretty bad, script is apparently horrible (I mean they have him crawling across a table stabbing a guy with a lobster). Micro was always an annoying character, and if there's a battle van, that'll be the final nail in the coffin.

And he didn't care, chances are Joan, Bumpo or Dave would call the police if he killed him for just playing the guitar. In the original script the confrontation was more involved, but cut down because of $$$. The movie was ****ed budget wise.
