The Amazing Spider-Man Moviehole scoops details on both scripts...

Because the proposed SM4 script was crap.

The reboot script isn't, apparently.

They compared them both then decided with the reboot.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather have no Spidey film over the ****e that was proposed for SM4.
Yes, I read the original post. Repeating what it contains does not respond to my concern, which is that if Sony is dead set on cramming ill-conceived junk like "The Vulturess" into Spider-Man 4, then they may simply continue cramming ill-conceived crap into the reboot.

In which the studio interfered supposedly and wanted to change Raimi's ideas which he of course didn't like so he walked. So they disagreed again.

Ace, when do studios think of a good story? It always leads back to money for them.

I'm going by the reports.

The script of SM4 included Pete and MJ having a baby. WHY? We all know why, coz Raimi AGAIN wanted focus on the relationship trials and tribulations melodrama. And you just know it would of led to Pete wanting to quit being Spidey... AGAIN!!!!!

The reboot script is reportedly much better than the SM4 script.

I think when they say gritty, they mean more in line with Spidey stories like Kravens Last Hunt or Death of Gwen Stacey. Not necessarily those stories but you know what I mean.

They won't cut out Spidey's humour, especially when one of the biggest criticisms of Raimi movies is that Spidey doesn't wise crack enough.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say whilst sony knows SM3 wasn't well recieved (critically) they don't know (or care) why.

His ideas most defenitely would have worked out for the best. Sam knew what he was doing. He was going to give us possibly an incredible film.

Because it's likely the direction for a fourth Raimi film, differs from their intentions for the first reboot Spidey film.

Different in what way that will change their desire to micro-manage?

But they are already happy with the reboot script... that's why they chose it over the SM4 script.

If they are ALREADY happy with it, why change it?

And I'm not being funny, Black Cat is a terrible character, changing her to Vultress doesn't make a lick of difference to me. It's still stupid though I'll give you that.

... And Sandman turned out to be pretty damn awesome, in my opinion.

If Spider-Man 3 had been split into 2 parts as originally planned, then I think we would have seen a better Venom.

visually yes... but for the love of god.. does every villain have to have a sympathetic motive? and did he need to be connected to peter in any way? NO. They added too much fluff to sandman when imo he should have and could have been just what he always is... a troubled man with superabilities. Raimi should have respected that and treated venom with a bit more severity... Hell you can tell from the symbiotes meteorite landing like a lil golfball in the sand.. raimi didnt give a crap about the character. And guess what? His movie suffered because of it.

I remember reading someone saying the script for 5 and 6 was amazing. so that gives me hope. obviously 5 and 6 is now 4 and 5

Your blind love of Raimi strikes again!

Listen, well, read :D

The SM4 script, was crap. Raimi's ideas for the fourth, were crap. And so were Sony's. That's why they scrapped it.

Seriously, as a Spidey fan would you want ANOTHER film that focuses on relationship melodrama and Peter AGAIN wanting to quit as Spider-Man? Because the thing with the baby? That would of led to that.

Seriously, as a Spidey fan would you want ANOTHER villain personally connected to Peter?

I mean hello! Rehash anyone!

They didn't "Choose it," Raimi walked and it's what they were left with. It may be better, but there's no information suggesting that they're happy with it's current state (or that they're unhappy with it, either), and I would be completely unsurprised if they meddled it into the ground, too, the same way they did with SM3 and now SM4.

Different in how they want to present the current series. See MGM/Broccoli's with Die Another Day and Casino Royale. A different cast and a different story will often lead to a different direction.

Hey, who wrote the SM4 script..? Think I missed the name :o

Moviehole has details on both scripts.

Basically for SM4:
- Spider-man 4 DID feature Peter and Mary-Jane with a baby.
- Vulturess was added in the script, at the request of the studio.
- Vulturess was a retooled version of Black Cat.
- Vulture was the editor of the Daily Bugle.
- Script was apparently pure crap.
- Raimi had lost hope in the project and walked.
- The studio also wanted to add a third villain.
- Anne Hathaway was gone from the project late last year (my guess is when Sony turned the Black Cat into the Vulturess).

For the reboot:
- The script is much better than the script for Spider-man 4.
- The script IS complete, and was finished at the same time as SM4, allowing the studio to compare the two.
- The script was commissioned as a contingency plan, should Raimi walk.
- Unfortunately, they describe the script as "more Dark Knight than Spider-man".
- The new film is the first part in a new trilogy.
- The aim of the script is to cut the "fluff" - which they speculate means no humour and a serious tone.

Haw. For those of you that blamed Raimi for saying SM4 would be crap...well look what you all get...A BIG FINGER IN YOUR FACE AND ME SAYING I TOLD YOU SO.:o Sony ruined it, not Raimi.

"Different" doesn't automatically equate to "Better."

!
Sony hated the fact that Raimi wanted to use Vulture. A VIllian who would have made for a great story. That's not what Sony wanted.

Yes, I understand the concept that they want to do something different. I fail to see how this indicates that they have less of an interest in meddling, or that they will not compromise the creative integrity of the project.

the big difference is spidey is sony's flag ship title. the franchise has a direct say on sony's bottom line. so the freedom they give the likes of D9 (30 million budget) and bond (I'm guessing no more than 100 million) is granted because there is less to lose

Vanderbilt wrote one and Raimi had his own outline for it, as reported in the delay articles that were released a few weeks ago. The studio wanted Vanderbilts, Raimi didn't, they had a massive punch up, Raimi walked away.

Vanderbilt also wrote the reboot script.

yes but do you really want it to start all over again just 2 years after the last film with new actors

we saw peter in HS already we saw his origins why should we care to see it all over again

peter matured and grew up in the 3 films we saw progression in him

i just feel drained having to invest my time into another spiderman and other characters after i spent the past 10 years investing in Tobey/Dunst/Franco/etc.

actually from what i gather from my friend who worked on spidey 3... sony damn well knows.. thus why there nipping SM4 in the bud this time
