Hey guys,
I thought I would make this a separate thread from Vash's 3.1 edit since it's quite old and it doesn't look like he's coming back (and this sub-forum is DOA anyways). I along with a lot of people have been waiting for a strong re-edit of Spider-Man 3. I know this film (and the entire trilogy) like the back of my hand, and though I have always defended it, I also knew it had it's flaws (some more serious than others). I also felt that there was a better, sleeker movie buried within all of that fluff.
Well, today in Vash's thread spiderfan970 linked to 'Spider-Man 3: Redemption', an edit done from the fanedit.info site by a user named Badscooter. I spent the day trying to download it, and watched it twice tonight. To say I was blown away would be a complete understatement. He strips away a good 25 minutes of fat from the original film and also does some re-shuffling. Amongst the most notable things:
- Opening Voiceover Narration: GONE
- Sandman is NO LONGER tied to Uncle Ben's murder - the whole story thread is completely removed from the film! This is done so seamlessly that if you had not known it was there to begin with, you'd never notice. Seeing it removed also really brings to light just how unneeded it was and how it cheapened the lessons from film one (IMO).
- Eddie no longer has a relationship with Gwen Stacy. This best serves the new cut of the film when Badscooter removes all of the goofy ground dialogue between Captain Stacy and Eddie during the Crane Rescue as it had previously cut between the action parts in the skyscraper up above. It's much more exciting!
- No more STRUT SEQUENCE!
- The Jazz Club dance is snipped so perfectly too. It removes all of the Wil-E-Coyote dancing and simply sticks to a slow dance right in front of MJ.
- Both the news caster and the reporter are cut out in big chunks. Thank god! Same with the annoying children. The gratuitous American Flag shot is also lopped out.
- The butler monologue: GONE. Harry decides to help Peter in the end by his own accord.
This is the major stuff. There are so so many little cuts and tweaks that if you know Spider-Man 3 as well as I do, you will be flabbergasted. Obviously the guy could only do so much as it as a fan-edit, so if some cheesy bits are right in the middle of a musical cue, they're stuck there, but he does manage to snip out a few of the sillier ones ('Now I'm gonna kick your little ass' was mercifully removed).
I apologize if this comes off as rambling, but I want to shout from the roof tops how good this edit is. I feel that if the movie Sam Raimi and co. had released in theaters was closer to this tighter cut (and with another 15 minutes of Venom worked in somewhere) the franchise would not have been hit with the huge backlash that it was, and we Raimi lovers might have seen Spider-Man 4. Do yourself a favor and check this out!
