Natalie Portman is JANE FOSTER!

Natalie Portman is a great choice as...Jane Foster. Thor's alias of Donald Blake could always be in the sequel.

Nice choice. She's very talented. And also brings some much needed star power for the film.

Since Kevin Feige said there won't be a Donald Blake, I've got a theory for Jane Foster's role in the film: once banished to Earth, Thor will be considered insane and will go to some mental institution. Guess who's gonna be his nurse... :cwink:

there's not a mental institution or prison on EARTH that can hold Thor. (the REAL Thor, not that "ultimate" cream puff)...

Or Feige is lying.
^ That.

Hey it would make sense at this point.

If this isn't going to be an all-Asgard story, one can assume the script has been re-worked quite a bit in the last couple of years since it will be taking place on present day Midgard and they want Thor to gel with the other franchises.

I don't know, man, something tells me they're gonna use some small bits from Ultimate Thor. It's just a gut feeling. In the first draft, Thor is banished to Earth during the viking era and becomes a slave, since he's powerless.

Now, after the changes in the script, we know that he's gonna be banished to Earth in modern times, probably powerless too, as in the first draft. Since is highly improbable that he's going to be enslaved in the 21st century, the mental institution storyline could happen. And, if done right, could be really good, IMO.

I'm not familiar enough with Thor to say whether Portman is right for the character, but I like her so it's great to see her involved with the project. That plot description sounds really cool though. I'm getting really jazzed about the film.

I really hope she doesn't get caught in the requiste Spidey 1 MJ situation. Attack his heart, Loki!

Woot! I'm excited about this casting. Well, I've been excited about all the casting for this film thus far.

Foster's importance to the story will likely be that Thor starts off not giving a **** about humans, sees them as lesser beings because he is a god, etc. Then he falls for Foster and realizes there is more to them than that, and decides to stay on Earth to help them even after he gets his powers back and is allowed to return to Asgard.

Cue Avengers movie

Why would they cast "Jane Foster" if not including "Donald Blake"?

Definitely a great choice. Natalie is a solid actress and I think she'll bring a lot to the role. I'm just glad all these DC/Marvel flicks are finally casting. They're finally moving forward.

I REALLY like that idea. It could give a lot of dimension to the character, make him more in line with the other franchises, and provide a nice arc for his character. It's sure a hell of a lot better than the "Donald Blake" character.

Thor in a mental institution would bug me. I rather like Don Blake, but I suppose I wouldn't be too broken up if he doesn't appear.

What does everyone have against Donald Blake?

He most certainly would need to be stripped of his god-hood.

I don't know. Maybe they can't separate the character from the handicap on Thor that he represented. Thor was extremely vulnerable in his Don Blake state, which came up as a silly weakness in the Silver Age comics a lot. That annoyed me too, but Don Blake as a character doesn't. I think he enriches Thor, especially if portrayed as he has been during the current comic series.

But why name the character Jane Foster?
Because the character will be Jane Foster?

They can have a nurse in the movie without Thor magically transforming into a crippled doctor.

Yeah, I'm sure he will be. I think they'll make Thor go through something like the Aslan arc in the first Narnia movie. Remember how Aslan was powerless and got humiliated by his enemies? And then he kind of "resurrected" in a glorious way?

I guess Thor is gonna be heavily humiliated during his banishing, and that, besides teaching him some humility, would only make the return of his powers all the more thrilling.

Portman in Thor. I can dig it. Cannot say I have much faith in Hemsworth, but with Branagh at the helm and an already good cast surrounding him, I have faith in the project.

Hopefully Portman beat out Biel, and Biel isnt still up for another role. Shes nice to look at, but shes got a bit of a ways to go before Im confident in her projects.
