007 PREVIEW: 'FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER'
Screenwriter Don Payne talks about what’s to come in the further adventures of Marvel’s First Family and why he wants to script a Silver Surfer spin-off

Galactus is going to be in the movie.

There it is. That’s the answer many fans have been wondering ever since 20th Century Fox announced the sequel to 2005’s “Fantastic Four” is going to be called “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” instead of “FF2.” After all, you can’t have the Silver Surfer without Galactus, right?

Now the question on everyone’s minds is of course, what the hungry, world-devouring master will look like when he arrives on screen on June 15, 2007. Screenwriter Don Payne is coy, but he’s quick to point out “the story definitely focuses more on the Silver Surfer—otherwise it would be called ‘Rise of the Silver Surfer and Galactus,’” he laughs. However, further prodding reveals the purple planet eater, who sends his herald to seek out worlds suitable for him to consume, may not actually be explored as a character, but more as a “force.”

“As far as Galactus goes, the essence will be the same,” Payne maintains, describing the entity as an amalgam of concepts combined with the original “Coming of Galactus” story from Fantastic Four #48. “We’re also using elements from Fantastic Four #57-60, where the Silver Surfer encounters Dr. Doom,” Payne says. “Then there are a couple moments that were inspired by Ultimate Extinction.”

Payne, who’s written and produced “Simpsons” episodes and is coming off penning “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” starring Uma Thurman, has the chops to give FF2 plenty of the foursome’s trademark wit and drama. But better yet, he’s not only a lifelong Silver Surfer fan, he’s a true-blue fanboy. And as such, the writer promises a film true to its Stan Lee/Jack Kirby roots, complete with strong characters, laugh-out-loud situational comedy and, of course, plenty of bizarre and mysterious sci-fi brought to life.

“I think the sci-fi aspects set [the Fantastic Four] apart from other superhero comics,” says Payne. “It will definitely have comedic moments, but it will also have drama and action and amazing visual effects. It’s a fun adventure movie first and foremost.”

Despite his passion for the FF, Payne had his eyes sternly locked on his favorite character of all, who will make his big-screen debut. “I’ve always loved the Surfer,” the writer gushes. “I think he may be the most complex comic character of all time. He’s mysterious and he’s powerful and he’s menacing and he’s aloof but he’s also thoughtful and noble and tragic. He’s made this huge sacrifice and yet he’s bringing about the destruction of countless worlds and civilizations. He feels guilty about it but he has to have this Zen-like detachment.”

“Rise of the Silver Surfer” takes place about a year after director Tim Story’s 2005 film, and Payne has the rundown of what Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Ioan Gruffudd), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Jessica Alba), Ben Grimm/the Thing (Michael Chiklis) and Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Chris Evans) have been up to between films.

“They’re way better off financially, and you’ll see that reflected in the Baxter Building and in Reed’s lab, both of which have been refurbished,” Payne explains, adding that, in his mind, the team will have had encounters with a few supervillains in that time period. “Reed and Sue are dealing with being celebrities and superheroes and also trying to have a private life. Reed is struggling to retain his status as a respected scientist while also doing the superhero thing.”

Ben Grimm in particular has come a long way from his closeted self-conscious stage seen in the first film. “Ben is more comfortable about being the Thing,” Payne assures, “thanks mostly to his relationship with Alicia [Masters (Kerry Washington)].” The fourth team member is still lighting the world on fire with his signature bravado.

“Johnny is still Johnny,” Payne says, referring to the character’s devil-may-care attitude, “although he’ll have a little bit of introspection about his life and his own unique problems to deal with in this movie.”

As for confirming one of the film’s least-kept secrets, Payne jokes that the wedding between Reed and Sue may be “the most photographed wedding since Prince Charles and Princess Di.” Also, look for a certain metallic-skinned herald to surf into town and throw a wrench into their relationship.

“I wouldn’t say the Surfer is in a love triangle with Sue and Reed, but there’s definitely a connection between Sue and the Surfer,” reveals Payne, who adds that Silver Surfer, a.k.a. Norrin Radd, will show up early on in the film with his Power Cosmic and quickly become sought after by a number of interested parties who want to know what his arrival means and what his purpose is.

And comic fans can rest soundly, as the film aims to keep the shiny-skinned space rover’s look intact. “From what I’ve heard from [director] Tim [Story], Fox and Marvel, the look of the Silver Surfer is going to be as pure to the comics as any fan could hope for,” Payne states. While the Surfer’s origin will be touched on in the film, don’t expect an extended flashback explaining his relationship with Galactus.

“I’m hoping that’s something that would be explored more fully if there’s a Surfer solo film, which I’m hoping there will be,” Payne says. If “Rise of the Silver Surfer” launches well, he may just get his chance to write it. “I’d love to,” he exclaims. “I would definitely like to see more of his origin, either in flashbacks to [his home world of] Zenn-La and [his lover] Shalla Bal and the sacrifice he had to make, or starting from there.”

With all this talk of silvery goodness, let’s not forget a certain cloaked individual who got packed up and shipped off to Latveria at the end of the last film. Dr. Doom (Julian McMahon) will return as an adversary for the Four as well. Besides the fact “he will be unfrozen,” laughs Payne, “In the story, [Doom’s] got a very personal interest in the Silver Surfer and obviously a grudge against the FF. I think people will be happy in the direction he’s going in.”

Payne also threw out a wink to comics fans with the inclusion of the Human Torch’s smoking new love interest, Frankie Raye, played by model-turned actress Beau Garrett. “The fact that in the comics she was linked to Galactus made it too good to pass on,” he says.

And if there’s ever a third Fantastic Four movie, Payne has already got some ideas. “Oh man, there are so many good stories to choose from. If it were up to me, I’d love to do a story about Annihilus and the Negative Zone. Or the Skrulls—I love the Super Skrull. The Puppet Master would be a logical choice since he’s Alicia’s stepfather and therefore has a link already with the FF. I’d love to see the Inhumans. It would be really cool to see [the FF] go up against another group of superpowered beings because it’s something we haven’t seen before. I’d love to see the destruction of Black Bolt’s scream on the big screen. That would be awesome.”

“Then there are a couple moments that were inspired by Ultimate Extinction.”
Now that's a relief. Here's hoping those moments have nothing to do with the look or essence of Galactus.
Thanks for posting this article, GoblinScrier.
Payne is sounding more and more like a true blue lifelong FF fan that knows his stuff. And his work has always impressed me.
I think we're very fortunate the job of scripting FF2 went to his very capable hands.
:ff:

Not to keen on the comments about galactus. The essence is there? He's more of a force then a character, he's an amalgam of concepts??? WTF? There is only one way to do galactus and not that Ultimate crap. This has just lowered my expectations. I don't know, it sounds like Galactus may get wrapped uped in this movie, when he should be held out for a thrid.

Yeah I picked this up from the newsstand last week. Sounds like things are looking up.

Did this guy do any work on the first Fantastic Four?

I'm not sure I agree with your comment that things are looking up. I mean if they (and it sounds like they have) are changing Galactus then it will suck. You probably have a better insight on this then i do.

Did this guy do any work on the first Fantastic Four?

No. Not sure what Simpsons episodes he wrote, but the one's I've seen over the years have always been enjoyable. On a good note and I can't speak for anyone else, but i liked "My Super Exgirlfreind"

I like the fact that they're doing their homework here, but I hope the end result significantly favors 616, as opposed to Ultimate.

Sounds good. His head is in the right place. Everything I heard is good

Though i still favor Alicia/Surfer

Galactus is going to be in the movie.
If galactus is being changed anyway other then how kirby designed him, then he's not going to be in the movie cause it's not Galactus. Here go FOX again phucking with classic characters. first Phoenix gets short changed and now it sounds as if galactus with be in name only.

That's not the way I took it.
Don Payne sounds like he knows better than to give us a watered-down Galactus. At this point, I'm guardedly optimistic that Payne will respect and honor the Lee/Kirby original.

I like that you're optimistic, and you're a 100 percent right, Payne does sound optimistic, but when you factor in the execs over ast FOX???? It doesn't look good for the big G. The problem is that we as the comic fan audience can't send those knuckle heads over at FOX a message because we don't have the strength in numbers to do it. This is why they demand changes and other stuff becasue either they don't like the concept or don't want to spend the cash. I just see no other way for galactus to work if he's not who kirby designed. i can't stand that Ultimate crap. A buch of matrix looking ships. Jeez. Tell me that's not cost more cost effective for FOX, and that's what we're going to end up with. Just mark my words.

Just one thing if we do get Gah Lak Tus you can blame the people who came up with the concept in Marvel and not the Fox execs who simply just choosed the form direct from the comic books. :(

However, given what I read there is room left for optimism.

Did this guy do any work on the first Fantastic Four?

No.....and it sounds like he almost forgot about them this time.....:o

..."a force"...? What the hell does that mean?....

Please dear God, don't let them mess up Galactus. What they did to the Phoenix Saga was pain enough.

Interesting interview, ive given up on the guess Galactus thing,we'll get a straight answer in June

“I think the sci-fi aspects set [the Fantastic Four] apart from other superhero comics,” says Payne. “It will definitely have comedic moments, but it will also have drama and action and amazing visual effects. It’s a fun adventure movie first and foremost.”

“Johnny is still Johnny,” Payne says, referring to the character’s devil-may-care attitude, “although he’ll have a little bit of introspection about his life and his own unique problems to deal with in this movie.”

Very pleased to read that these two aspects will be in the movie

“I wouldn’t say the Surfer is in a love triangle with Sue and Reed, but there’s definitely a connection between Sue and the Surfer,” reveals Payne, who adds that Silver Surfer, a.k.a. I guess as we thought Sue will get Alicia's part and the army will no doubt be one of the interested parties after the SS

All in all promising stuff

I like all of these comments and I am so thankful to have someone with a knowledge base of these characters working on this film.

Like JMAfan said, I hope they don't lose 'the four" in all of these other storyline developments.

I also like the potential directions that he inferred for the third installment.

This article definately put a smile on my face! :yay:

While I'm far from optimistic about this movie, I'd kinda like to know where you're getting these ideas from. "...there are a couple moments that were inspired by Ultimate Extinction.” That's all that was said about anything Ultimate-related. In fact, the overwhelming message from this interview was that Galactus' design would be 616-based.

Again, I could really care less, but don't go jumping the gun quite yet over nothing. It looks like these guys are going out of their way to please the fans.

I like this. I honestly can't see them showing Galactus as this wooden looking giant with a purple hat. It might look cool on comic book pages but if that's the villain it'll look like Mega-Maid from Spaceballs or something worse. It might be better only experiencing Galactus through the eyes of Galactus and never looking directly at him as a whole. So when the Surfer is communicating with him we just see the Surfer through his eyes and maybe something else visually to show who he's talking too but never fully revealing him. It would be too corny.

It also sounds like this storyline will wrap in this film and not continue into the 3rd. I know Story wanted to do the SS in the 3rd film but then Fox probably would have lost the rights by then...At least he convinced them to hold off on the SS standalone film till after this one and this film will secure the rights for Fox to the SS as well. That might also be why they included his name in the title as well to show a focus on him even though Doom & the 4 might have equal screen time.

I have to admit that the thought of original Galactus on screen has me a bit leary. You've got to admit, he looks a bit dorky. He's got handles on his head for crying out loud. I guess we'll just have to wait for the next 5 months before we find out.
