Galactus is going to be in the movie.
There it is. Thats the answer many fans have been wondering ever since 20th Century Fox announced the sequel to 2005s Fantastic Four is going to be called Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer instead of FF2. After all, you cant have the Silver Surfer without Galactus, right?
Now the question on everyones minds is of course, what the hungry, world-devouring master will look like when he arrives on screen on June 15, 2007. Screenwriter Don Payne is coy, but hes quick to point out the story definitely focuses more on the Silver Surferotherwise it would be called Rise of the Silver Surfer and Galactus, he laughs. However, further prodding reveals the purple planet eater, who sends his herald to seek out worlds suitable for him to consume, may not actually be explored as a character, but more as a force.
As far as Galactus goes, the essence will be the same, Payne maintains, describing the entity as an amalgam of concepts combined with the original Coming of Galactus story from Fantastic Four #48. Were also using elements from Fantastic Four #57-60, where the Silver Surfer encounters Dr. Doom, Payne says. Then there are a couple moments that were inspired by Ultimate Extinction.
Payne, whos written and produced Simpsons episodes and is coming off penning My Super Ex-Girlfriend starring Uma Thurman, has the chops to give FF2 plenty of the foursomes trademark wit and drama. But better yet, hes not only a lifelong Silver Surfer fan, hes a true-blue fanboy. And as such, the writer promises a film true to its Stan Lee/Jack Kirby roots, complete with strong characters, laugh-out-loud situational comedy and, of course, plenty of bizarre and mysterious sci-fi brought to life.
I think the sci-fi aspects set [the Fantastic Four] apart from other superhero comics, says Payne. It will definitely have comedic moments, but it will also have drama and action and amazing visual effects. Its a fun adventure movie first and foremost.
Despite his passion for the FF, Payne had his eyes sternly locked on his favorite character of all, who will make his big-screen debut. Ive always loved the Surfer, the writer gushes. I think he may be the most complex comic character of all time. Hes mysterious and hes powerful and hes menacing and hes aloof but hes also thoughtful and noble and tragic. Hes made this huge sacrifice and yet hes bringing about the destruction of countless worlds and civilizations. He feels guilty about it but he has to have this Zen-like detachment.
Rise of the Silver Surfer takes place about a year after director Tim Storys 2005 film, and Payne has the rundown of what Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Ioan Gruffudd), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Jessica Alba), Ben Grimm/the Thing (Michael Chiklis) and Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Chris Evans) have been up to between films.
Theyre way better off financially, and youll see that reflected in the Baxter Building and in Reeds lab, both of which have been refurbished, Payne explains, adding that, in his mind, the team will have had encounters with a few supervillains in that time period. Reed and Sue are dealing with being celebrities and superheroes and also trying to have a private life. Reed is struggling to retain his status as a respected scientist while also doing the superhero thing.
Ben Grimm in particular has come a long way from his closeted self-conscious stage seen in the first film. Ben is more comfortable about being the Thing, Payne assures, thanks mostly to his relationship with Alicia [Masters (Kerry Washington)]. The fourth team member is still lighting the world on fire with his signature bravado.
Johnny is still Johnny, Payne says, referring to the characters devil-may-care attitude, although hell have a little bit of introspection about his life and his own unique problems to deal with in this movie.
As for confirming one of the films least-kept secrets, Payne jokes that the wedding between Reed and Sue may be the most photographed wedding since Prince Charles and Princess Di. Also, look for a certain metallic-skinned herald to surf into town and throw a wrench into their relationship.
I wouldnt say the Surfer is in a love triangle with Sue and Reed, but theres definitely a connection between Sue and the Surfer, reveals Payne, who adds that Silver Surfer, a.k.a. Norrin Radd, will show up early on in the film with his Power Cosmic and quickly become sought after by a number of interested parties who want to know what his arrival means and what his purpose is.
And comic fans can rest soundly, as the film aims to keep the shiny-skinned space rovers look intact. From what Ive heard from [director] Tim [Story], Fox and Marvel, the look of the Silver Surfer is going to be as pure to the comics as any fan could hope for, Payne states. While the Surfers origin will be touched on in the film, dont expect an extended flashback explaining his relationship with Galactus.
Im hoping thats something that would be explored more fully if theres a Surfer solo film, which Im hoping there will be, Payne says. If Rise of the Silver Surfer launches well, he may just get his chance to write it. Id love to, he exclaims. I would definitely like to see more of his origin, either in flashbacks to [his home world of] Zenn-La and [his lover] Shalla Bal and the sacrifice he had to make, or starting from there.
With all this talk of silvery goodness, lets not forget a certain cloaked individual who got packed up and shipped off to Latveria at the end of the last film. Dr. Doom (Julian McMahon) will return as an adversary for the Four as well. Besides the fact he will be unfrozen, laughs Payne, In the story, [Dooms] got a very personal interest in the Silver Surfer and obviously a grudge against the FF. I think people will be happy in the direction hes going in.
Payne also threw out a wink to comics fans with the inclusion of the Human Torchs smoking new love interest, Frankie Raye, played by model-turned actress Beau Garrett. The fact that in the comics she was linked to Galactus made it too good to pass on, he says.
And if theres ever a third Fantastic Four movie, Payne has already got some ideas. Oh man, there are so many good stories to choose from. If it were up to me, Id love to do a story about Annihilus and the Negative Zone. Or the SkrullsI love the Super Skrull. The Puppet Master would be a logical choice since hes Alicias stepfather and therefore has a link already with the FF. Id love to see the Inhumans. It would be really cool to see [the FF] go up against another group of superpowered beings because its something we havent seen before. Id love to see the destruction of Black Bolts scream on the big screen. That would be awesome.
