New Mutants New Mutants News and Discussion - Part 2

Do people think this will definitely go to streaming now? Maybe on Disney +? Is it even going to have a theatre release?

Was starting to get a bit hyped to finally see this so the delay is typical.

I doubt Disney would have pulled it if they didn't care about it. If it is just going to streaming I don't think they would have bothered pulling the cinema release.

The fact that it's PG-13 means it could go to Disney+. I have a hunch it premieres there or first on VOD for a month sometime in April or May.

They had no choice but to pull the cinema release. How can they release it in theaters as planned with most theaters closed for at least the next 6 weeks? Not to mention the civilian lockdowns that has spread across the globe for the forseeable future in several major markets?

M,y speculation? It will definitely be in theaters but will see a very limited run and quick turnaround to streaming. This movie definitely wont earn its money back at this point but they will release it to cover the contractual obligations for a short run and limited amount of theaters and it will go on D+ rather quickly

I'd like to see it on Disney Plus. We are getting that very soon.

Yeah, this sounds fair at this point. Limited run which is up- or downscaled very quickly depending on week 1 performance and quick turnaround to streaming.

20th Century Fox's deal with HBO runs through 2022. So I'm not certain the Mouse could put NM on their own streamer without first buying out AT&T's rights.

So it sounds like Vin Diesel's Bloodshot is quickly being funnelled to Digital. IIRC the long range domestic and international box office forecast for that was around the same as New Mutants. Bloodshot already had 1-week wide release to theatres so it's obviously not an apples to apples comparison.

Obviously there's other things they have to worry about like what @Zarex mentioned but that said, could New Mutants be next?

Disney should just call it a day and put it on either D+ or Hulu. That would be their best bet in this time of quarantine.

''“Look, you can only go up after Dark Phoenix. That’s not to say anything bad about the people involved, but it was what it was''

Sorry but not sorry lmao

Would be quite funny if NM went on to get worse reviews when it was released though. Still hoping for the best of course.

I hope New Mutants will be released on Disney+

I'd say VOD is more likely with Dark Phoenix dropping on HBO Now. It seems rumors of Fox movies still obligated to their HBO contracts is true, and if Disney wants money it'll put it on VOD. Of course one wonders if rumors about Fox movies all being contracted to have theatrical release is also true. I might believe it if NONE of the Fox movies Disney acquired by the acquisition end up on VOD in the next three months.

Never Disney +. Hulu. Potentially VOD. I'm really unsure why this one isn't --> it just doesn't seem worth putting more money into marketing it, rather cut losses and run due to the tumultuous release delays it's had.

Why not Disney +? They just moved 'Love Victor' and the Lizzy reboot because they were deemed "too adult oriented" - due to that I'd frankly be surprised if 'New Mutants' is considered more family friendly than those two.

I prefer Disney +. I feel like whether its the mcu or not. All the movies that Disney now owns from foX should be there.

This movie going to Disney+ is the best case scenario for all involved

- Fans of the movie get to see it
- Disney doesn't waste money marketing it
- The X-brand doesn't risk further tarnishment
- The New Mutants characters are saved for the MCU where they can be freshly introduced

It's a win-win for all involved

Well, American fans that is. Because most countries outside the US still don't have Disney+. And if the movie is not good putting it in the place that contains all of their Marvel stuff where people can associate it with does not seem like the best of ideas. I still think Hulu is a much better option but there might be a contract to release the film theatrically otherwise they could have done that already. I guess we'll see.

I really don't get the hard on people have for getting this released on streaming. Especially when it seems like most of the people constantly bringing it up don't seem very interested in seeing the movie

A lot of those movies still have licenced rights deals with other platforms/cable channels, particularly internationally. Eventually they'll be there, it's not a simple oversight.

This would have made peanuts at the box office, and depending on how long the industry is at a halt and/or what the theatrical landscape is like when the dust settles, this film seems like a prime candidate for streaming, especially if we get a more compressed schedule. Iger today (in an interview with Barrons) said there may be more films going to streaming. Not the big tentpole blockbusters obviously, many of which have moved.
