BvS New Positivity Thread (READ THE FIRST POST!) - Part 1

Here's positive: BvS was so good I have no idea how Justice League can top it.

Hmm, positive positive positive....

The look of the characters was perfect.

Wonder Woman was portrayed well enough to have places to go and to be excited about.

The concept of metahumans and the search for them was set up well enough that we can buy it in the next movie.

The relationship between Alfred and Bruce was great.

I liked the general feel of the world and the government, so that it felt pretty grounded and reasonable.

The opening was sweet.

The opening was sweet.

Fantastic beginning with Bruce falling into the cave and his dream of being taken into the light by the bats to only realize it was a beautiful lie. Set the tone perfectly for Batman. And then the scene of Bruce driving through Gotham during the battle was so intense. I love how MOS and BvS showed the perspective from people on the streets while the destruction was happening. The way it was filmed gave it such a real feel to it, you feel the gravity of Superman and Zod's actions, incredible. Plus, the score for both those scenes in BvS is excellent

What I love so much about BvS and MOS is that ZS does not romanticize the heroes. I believe that if a Superman type being ever showed up, it would turn the world upside down. I love this approach. People would love him, hate him, worship him etc... As much as I enjoy Reeve's Superman, I just don't see a world being so accepting of someone like that. The uncertainty surrounding him among the people and governments would be extremely high. Even with his heroics, people would still be afraid. What if with those types of powers, he ever decided to not use them for good because of some traumatic event he suffers. Bringing in an older, more experienced Batman fits so perfectly with this. Here is someone who has had personal experiences with good people who have turned bad. Couple this with what Superman is capable of and how Batman perceives his career against crime to be a failure, to have lost his faith in the good that is still out there, I found all this to be so interesting.

I also love that, being raised as a human, Superman displays a variety of human emotions. We see Superman doubt his place in the world. Yes, Superman is supposed to be a beacon of hope but I can appreciate the journey it takes to get there. I feel it's disingenuous to have him never waver, with the reaction he has received from the world and the incidents that have occurred since he has donned the cape. Again, being raised human, I fully expect him to show the full range of emotions over the course of both films. And with this Superman, we see one of the most important traits displayed for the character, endurance. Through all the adversity and mixed reactions he has received, he ultimately endures and continues his fight for humanity. Of course this action is not lost on Batman, it brings him out of his despair and provides hope to him, that there is indeed still good out there.

I can understand some people not taking a liking to Superman and Batman in this film as much as they could or have in the past, because here they are not at their best. It is not until the end when we see both characters rise from the troubles that each of them faced. But until that point, it is at times a dark journey but one that I feel is honest, especially with the world's reaction and the circumstances put on them. It is why I appreciate what was done with this film so much.

Great post. I agree with all of it. I loved the other Superman films as a kid, but nowadays that kind of story doesn't interest me at all. Mister Perfect, always does the right thing, has complete confidence in his decisions, everybody loves him except for the villain, and in the end he wins and everything goes back to normal. It just doesn't make for a compelling story for me, as an adult. I want challenged and flawed characters, I want the stakes to feel real.

Superman is meant to represent the best in humanity, hope in the darkest of times, and you can't really show that unless you put him in a dark setting and actually test his resolve and morals.

that's easy. superman returns in glory. join the team and kick Darkside & his goons back to Antpocalype

ha

and lex out of jail for the president...

Haha! :hehe: I see what you did there. :P

Perfectly put!

“And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god; where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves; where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence; where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.”
:O :o

is it true... too big for little mind...?

That's the translation of the Kryptonian writing on Superman S shield on the suit right? It's a Joseph Campbell quote if I'm not wrong, who Snyder thinks very highly of. :)

And yeah I had brought that up on one the threads on the DCEU film forums too. The lines fit perfectly to Superman, then Batman, then Wonder Woman and then Superman again. It's really mind blowing when you see how closely the movie follows that one single quote! :D

it is also the theme of the movie...

“And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god;" - refer to Lex, he found superman who saved him from another abomination.

"where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves;" refer to bruce / batman. the batmonster he has became he managed to slay it in the end.

"where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence; where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.” refers to superman... the travel alone to find answer and then returns to embrace his world...

Yep! Well put! :)

This is my favourite movie and there is so much to pick up on. The Excalibur parallels and Superman and Batman's arcs. The continued threads from Man of Steel then to Batman v superman dawn of justice through to Justice League. Very smart movie. Different from whats come before and true to the characters. Looking very forward to seeing and owning the ultimate cut.

Both MoS and BvS had genuine real stakes involved because the creators were willing to test Superman's limits both physically and emotionally. For someone as powerful and strongly values as he is, you have to go to really emotional and physically challenging places.
I love Snyder and the creative team, they take risks and put their passion in to it, and it shows.

It's not that he wasn't heroic enough..for me anyways, it's really that we didn't get enough of it.

i sorta agree. a personally & physically saving an innocent (other than lois lane) in the final act is vital important.

many people can only see things right before their eyes. they can't see things beyond that. therefore, they can't see him saving the world by defeating General Zod or sacrificed himself to kill Doomsday.

they simply can't.

Could you lay out the Excalibur parallels for me?
I didn't catch that but it is an intriguing idea.

King Arthur got speared by Mordred but still pull the spear in deeper to stab Mordred and get a mutual kill
