Comics New X-Men: Academy X

Nezhno is awesome and it looks as if Pixie will become the annoying one now...well her name practically DEMANDS it. Dust is awesome..her and nezhno should get together....then again...this book wont be around after the crossovers...since they will all probably either join and x-team..die..or fade in Gen X land

I have no problem with this book going away. Don't get me wrong, This is my favorite x-book tied with x-factor, but the more books that get canned, the less I have to spend.

Way to keep on top of things, Kyle & Yost. I'm guessing it was Carey that reminded them that the adults of the institute exist within the same universe.

This is exactly why Dani should've stuck around to be the leader and mentor of the team. She's a good leader, a good X-man/X-forcer, and she actually knew the students.

I don't see what the big deal is that the adults haven't been featured prominantly. This is, obviously, a book about the kids.

All Kyle and Yost wanted to do was feature them mostly and with priority, rather than as sidekicks to the Astonishing "home" team. And I like that. But at its core, all the premise is is a slightly different flavor than what the original writer/s (because I don't quite remember) were doing.

And even then, we've seen the adults. I'm pretty sure we saw some of them around the Nimrod arc, as well as in other issues. Just, again, not with a spotlight placed on them, in favor of placing said spotlight on the kids. And when we saw them in the Nimrod arc, from what I remember, they basically told the kids to sit down, shut up, and be good little brats.

Instead, we got to see the kids save the day, since it's their book. And again. And again. And now we have the adults saying "Crap, we underestimated them, thought they couldn't do anything, tried to baby them, and we never should have been doing that." And it's probably right in line with what should have happened / be happening.

Personally, I like it, and I'm willing to bet that it's been purposefully building up to this. It's maybe been a little long-winded with countless adventure, but then again, I've always thought the biggest charm of this book was the fact that it was always, if you'll allow me to say, pretty balls-to-the-walls.

I agree. The kids are X-men in training...therefore they HAVE to face life threatening situations against all too real villians, supervillians, Gods/Devils, etc..in order to prove their mettle. The New Mutants did. Generation X did it...and now the New X-men are doing it...and it looks like these kids will actually be used in books outside this one..or at least X-23 will...the rest will probably go and hang out in limbo with the cast of new Mutants, since all the GenXers are on active duty...except Husk..Mondo, Gaia, the St.Crois twins and the dead ones(Synch and Skin)...oh and Artie...well..nevermind

Let's move on to current events in "New X-Men." Anole and Pixie are now official members of the team. What do you feel they each bring to the group, and why did you decide it was a good time to add them now?

Anole was a pretty early pick by Craig and me because he's got a decent power set and represents a kind of level-headed, good, normal kid. Pixie, too - she's a great visual. We just had to warp and twist them a little bit, because that's what we do to children. Now was a good time because the team needed some tonal balance. It's possible - and I'm not saying for sure - that things got a little grim.

During "Quest for Magik," Pixie had part of her soul removed - what happened to it? Is it still missing? And if so, what does that mean?

Yep, one-fifth of her soul was taken by Magik and converted into a Bloodstone. Doctor Strange sort of sums up how she's changed in issue #42. But in the bigger picture, if Magik were able to get the rest of her soul, she could summon the Elder Gods to Earth. That's what the Bloodstones are used for, in a general sense. Magik just wanted their power to kill Belasco.

In light of M-Day, would you say that it's the goal of every student to become X-Men? Or is it enough for a student just to learn how to use their powers and reintegrate themselves into society? Is that even an option with their "Endangered Species" status?

I would say the student body is seriously re-evaluating their desire to become X-Men. A lot of this is voiced in the upcoming "Children of X-Men" two-parter, but their lives have been a little on the 'living hell' side since M-Day. But these kids that have remained, they're pretty much stuck at the Institute. And they all know precisely what that means. Emma tells the rest of the 'Astonishing' team what the mindset of the students is, and they are astonished.

Yes, she seems to have an uncanny ability to do that.

The New-X-Men were a decent part of what's taking place in Mike Carey's "X-Men" currently. Did you work with him to coordinate their appearance and what would take place?

Craig and I have talked to Mike a number of times, but most of the coordination comes through editorial.

Between "World War Hulk: X-Men" and the attack on the mansion in "X-Men," the mansion should be pretty thrashed. Are they going to have to find a new place to live?

Much like Krakoa, the mansion is alive and constantly rebuilds itself. Overnight. So they're good. For now…

We'll keep our fingers crossed. The other X-Men seem so busy as well, who will be in charge of their training in the future? Will it still be Emma and Scott?

Look to the last few pages of "New X-Men" #43 for a renewed commitment to teaching. Beast was seen running a training simulation in "WWH: X-Men" and there will be much more teacher-student interaction in issues #42-44. There is a bald-headed man who knows a thing or two about teaching mutants hanging around the mansion lately.

Good point! The upcoming "Messiah CompleX" will be running through all the X-books - what can you tell us about the involvement of New X-Men? Did the story you were telling dovetail into the "Messiah CompleX?" Or did you have to do some rearranging?

So many elements from "New X-Men" show up in "Messiah CompleX,' even Craig and I were kind of surprised. But longtime readers of "New X-Men" (post "House of M") will be rewarded. What we were doing dovetailed in to a frightening degree. We rearranged nothing.

To wrap things up, I feel I should mention the Diamond Retailer Summit in Baltimore. At this event, Marvel released an image of X-Force that had X-23 in it (for details, see "X-POSITION: "X-Force" and "Cable" Special Edition). What does this mean? Is she still with the New X-Men? Are you involved with this new X-Force?

I missed that summit and thus have no idea what you're talking about.

Hm. Well, we'll chalk this up to that chaos we mentioned at the beginning of this X-POSITION. Thanks for talking with us today, Chris!

Generation X did it with leadership from Banshee and Emma. The New Mutants eventually got Cable.

These kids need someone like Moonstar.

Okay, so who's the girl that's front-and-center. And who's the guy on the right, peeking out behind the girl? Is it supposed to be Julian with longer Kevin-like hair?

And who's the girl in the top left? Assuming she's the same girl from the cover?

Girl front and center is Surge, you can see some electricity lines coming from her hands.
Guy behind her is Hellion who seems to be keeping his terrible Skottie Young makeover.
Girl in the top left is likely Trance.

bloody awesome.

Except that Moonstar is depowered. She'd be as much a liability as David is, who, for the record, is actually a liability. Unless he's not getting dead. Didn't he eventually help out at the end of the Magik arc? I forget who "inspired" getting the Cuckoos unmasked.

And it can be argued that, with the need for the X-Men of late, and the fact that there just aren't enough mutants post-HoM... well, who would be watching over the students and teaching them? Sure, the "home" team, but when we've seen the kids in trouble, it's often when the "home" team is involved or away, because everyone is stretched too thing, realistically.

Besides, didn't the GenX team eventually suffer from too many teacher-student disputes and such? I want a better word, but I can't find it. And the New Mutants/X-Force team did eventually cut themselves and splinter from Cable's tutelage, and I'm sure some people would argue that they were better off on their own, and would have been from the start.

I meant she should've never been depowered. Dani is a former New Mutant, SHIELD agent, and X-Forcer. She was perfect to keep onboard. I get the imression Kyle & Yost ditched her due to (and it pains me to say this) Weir & DiFillips' out-of-character portrayal of her as a softee.

See my "never should have depowered" statement.

But one could argue that they needed those mentors in the first place.

Was it Kyle and Yost who depowered Dani, though, or was it Editorial that compiled who to depower? (And later went back and said, yeah, let's repower this one and that one.)

I mean, it seems overly silly to decide which mutants to depower based on who felt like depowering who and who was writing titles at the time.

I get the distinct impression that if writers wanted to keep a certain character powered, they could've pled their case to the editors. I mean... Bling?

Speculation.

Unless there's other proof, I remain confident that it was an editorial decision. They cut the easiest losses for the most part, which I don't entirely agree with, and the few "hard" choices they made they later circumvented.

Sounds about right. So I don't blame Dani's depowering on Kyle or Yost, and think such doing is silly. She was depowered, had no place there as an instructor, badabing.

Hey! I like Bling! :cmad: :p

But yeah, they've said in past interviews, in rather snooty tones which is why I don't care for them, how they went over all the mutants involved and picked and chose who all they wanted to keep.

I think anyone from Milligan's run should just go away. F-ing Onyxx gets to live and Quill dies? F that.

Oh...and who's Trance again?

I actually like Onyxx myself... moreso than Bling anyhow. Quill was alright as a background character but I didn't care when he died.

And for the record, I just can't get over this title. I think I can officially call this my favorate title now. There were a few competators before, but this title has far surpassed them by now. Good stuff.

Agreed. :D
Well, favorite X-title, more than likely. As I put above, I've been a huge fan since the end of the HoM stuff.

Yeah, I like how slowly but surely it's been building up its fanbase. Frankly, I've loved it since New Mutants vol2, and even though it's DRASTICALLY different now, it's still my favorite book, and I like it more than before. Back when it was just romance and character development, I liked the book, but I was never agonizing over when the next issue would come out, anticipating, yet worrying at the same time. This book puts me through an emotional ringer. Haha.

Exactly how I feel.
