Late last year, in December, to be precise, Warner Bros announced a few new games based on Harry Potter, one of them being a new augmented reality (AR) game like Pokemon Go, titled Wizards Unite, from the same developer, Niantic. The other game was called Hogwarts Mystery and it was announced as a mobile RPG.
Today, Warner Bros. has released a new trailer giving us a taste of what the game will be all about. From the start of the trailer, it’s clear this game is about “you” the player and not Harry Potter, despite the game’s official name, “Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery.” The trailer says this is “your” story, but it’s apparently still filled with book series’ (and fan’s) favorite characters like Dumbledore, Snape, Prof. McGonagall and yes, Hagrid. Players will be allowed to make their own character and attend school, take classes, make friends and more, just like a standard RPG.

What’s not entirely known is the timeline in which this game takes place. As the trailer shows, Dumbledore is alive (spoiler), Snape is still teaching at the school and is not headmaster, but we don’t see Harry, Hermione or Ron, so it’s possible this takes place before Harry ever attends Hogwarts, but still takes place after his birth.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is due out Spring of 2018 for iOS and Android.

Until we get something official, we’ll take it all with a grain of salt, but for what it’s worth, last year Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment launched a new label called Portkey Games to publish Harry Potter games for smartphones as well as console platforms. It is rumored that Avalanche Software, known for developing the Disney Infinity games, is behind the development of the new Harry Potter game.

That footage looks pretty great and I would love for this to be true.

Not a huge fan of the series, but using all the random spells would be fun.

In April 2017, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment was seeking senior writers “with a deep understanding of British culture and grammatical presentation” for its Avalanche Software studio, suggesting the Disney Infinity developer could be responsible for the alleged Harry Potter title.

Thanks, Press Start and ResetEra.

Update 11:10 a.m.: Eurogamer has reported that “sources with knowledge of the project have confirmed to Eurogamer that the project is indeed real and currently in development.”

HARRY POTTER: WIZARDS UNITE - Niantic's Augmented-Reality Mobile Game Launching In 2019

Pokemon GO
developer Niantic, Inc. announced today that their next augmented reality (AR) mobile game, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, will launch in 2019. No specific release date was mentioned, but the developer released a short trailer urging players to enlist in the Statute of Secrecy Task Force.

Although we've yet to see gameplay, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will seemingly exist in the same vein as Pokemon GO. Through Niantic’s AR + real-world mobile game platform, players will become a part of the magical world created by J.K. Rowling. By simply walking around and exploring real-world neighborhoods and cities, players will go on adventures, learn and cast spells, discover mysterious artifacts, and encounter legendary beasts and iconic characters inspired by the Harry Potter franchise.

The Harry Potter: Wizards Unite urges players to "roll up their sleeves and volunteer to save the wizarding world from the Calamity."

Please resist the urge to panic. Traces of magic are appearing across the Muggle world without warning and in a rather chaotic manner. We worry it is only a matter of time before even the most incurious Muggles catch wind of it. We call on all witches and wizards to help contain the Calamity or risk the worst of times since You Know Who. Brush up on your spells, get your wand ready, and enlist immediately.

As a member of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force (a new task force formed in partnership between the Ministry of Magic and the International Confederation of Wizards) you will hone lightning fast wand reflexes, an ability to sniff out the faintest whiff of magical disorder from afar, and proficiency in advanced casting of multiple spells.
The adventure begins when Harry Potter: Wizards Unite launches in 2019.
