Days of Future Past No More Meaningless Cameos

I liked X-Men Origins Wolverine but have to acknowledge what most were saying about the cameos. ENOUGH already. They offer nothing to a film done the way they have been done. Write a good character and use him or her but don't jam one in just because you think fans want to see the character. As has been proven, the opposite happens. Fans get genuinely ticked off by shabby cameo treatments. All it does is confuse non-fans and generate bad-mouthing from fanboys. There's NO reason for them to do it any more. I hope they have been paying attention. They wasted Angel and Colossus and First Class is a fresh start for them.

What would be an acceptable cameo in your mind and what screen time would constitute a cameo?

I hope they literally pick up from the first scene in X1. Young Magneto overcoming a Nazi threat. The one cameo I'd LOVE to see would be a WWII era Logan/Creed liberating the Nazi concentration camp where Magneto is being held. Would Hugh Jackman do it? Now THAT would be a meaningful cameo!

Angel and Colossus had small supporting roles. I don't consider them cameos. But I do agree with the pointless cameos in the last 2 movies. The worst ones for me were those kids in Stryker's cages. They just create continuity issues and endless fan speculation as to who they were. X2 had alot of cameos as well but they served a purpose. Siryn, for example, was used as an alarm system and not just some random red-headed girl in the school.


I'm sure this new movie will have a bunch of recognizable cameos but i hope at least they serve some kind of purpose and not just some random walk-on role.

X2 had some brilliant cameos/references that made sense. By X3 and Wolverine, they couldn't find the balance between throwing in random mutants, actual comic characters with small roles, and miscellaneous cameos that didn't work very well. It wasn't a total disaster, but still disappointing.

Gambit could still be in "X-Men First Class" but would be too old and they would have to recast him in X4 (if there is one).

i beleive singer said on x 2 dvd he wanted to add new mutants to the series only if it made sense to the story he did'nt want similar mutants either

X3 was the worst with Psylocke appeared out of no where at the end and a bit in the beginning. Instead of killing him when the found him, they had to drag him to the top and dropped him, only to show Angel.

Gambit can still appear in X-men 4 as he could pass for early 20's in Wolverine. May be a few years older than Cyclop even. He could also receive ageless injection from Victor's gene ??

None of those were really cameos other than Emma probably...As mentioned earlier, the largest missed opportunity came from the mutants that were in cages. They had the opportunity to do something better with that but they didn't.

Especially regarding Wolverine, the cameos and even supporting roles of the recent films are pure Movie Trailer fodder, meant to rile up the fans.

"Oh look, Gambit is finally in a film!" (Don't think about the fact that his appearance is marginal at best, he acted as a rake to pull in the doubters along the fringe.)

"Emma Frost" (Enough said.)

I could go on, but I choose not to.

There has been very little thought as of late as to how one could incorporate a beloved character in a meaningful way.

Because Beast and Gambit and Psylocke and Angel are soooooo similar to everyone else... Singer could have added them.

Gambit's story line was OK, but it could've been other mutant instead of him. He should be saved for X4. Perhaps he could still be let's say he's only a few years older than Cyclop in Wolverine.

the wolverine game actually filled in some more backstory for the teleporters character because mystique and wolverine have to break him out of project wideawake and he puts his hand on her stomach and tells her to be careful she is carrying his son which actually was a cool nod to fans

Emma i don't know, it seems her character was put in to make fans said "Wow, The White Queen" but Cyclops isn't bad at all. They had introduce Cyclops for First Class' movie.

Are you implying that the black teleporter in Wolverine was Nightcrawler's father ? When Mystique turned human in X3, she was around 30 years old only.

At this stage, we're not even sure that the story will focus on the actual X-Academy first class. The story seems to focus on Charles and Erik themselves.

I wouldn't entirely agree.

The cameos and references in X2 still have potential to cause continuity headaches, fanboy grievances etc.

For instance, a human-looking Beast on the TV screen, shots of Angel's wings in the dam, and Mystique's discovery on Stryker's computer of several projects (including Operation Wideawake aka Sentinels) and lists of mutants - who included Franklin Richards as well as numerous characters from the X-Men comics.

All such things have the potential to get OCD types (many of whom are on here!) into 'analysis paralysis' over situations shown in later films.

This is the inherent danger in attempting to flesh out a mythology as vast as that of the X-Men.

Ultimately, cameo roles - such as the Stepford Cuckoos in X3, Jubilee in X1 and X2 - are meant to add characters who at least come from the actual mythos.

What Singer did was sometimes invent characters - channel-switching Jones and forked-tongued Artie - and it could be argued why not find an existing mutant that matched the criteria and served the purpose.

In my view, fans get far too hung up on minor details that are meant to add texture to the world being created on screen.

The reason why a lot of mutants are shoved into the movies for no particular reason is so that if they want to, they can use the characters for a later movie. Cyclops is only in Wolverine so that he could be used in First Class. Just like how they have to keep making movies every few years, they have to use characters every few years, otherwise, Fox loses the rights altogether. They're just planning ahead.

I think there has been good and bad use of characters in the movies, one of the reasons they do that is to give you the feel of an expanded universe. Like why was Archlight in the brotherhood when clearly she was a Maurader.

Problem with the x-men movies was that it was a 3 part chapter of Magnetos war and because of this the brotherhood was the villians throughout. However there was other players in the game overall Brotherhood were the villians, x2 even turned it around at the end to reveal magnetos plan to target humans with cerebro...

so i feel that cameos are important only if they fit more natural in the scene... like how you see the Stepford cuckoos appeared in the movie

It didn't matter that there was only one teleporter in X-Men Origins--we still have to acknowledge his ethnicity..

BTW, I thought Nightcrawler's father was some demon from some other world...

But, I actually wouldn't mind it if John Wraith turned out to be his father. It makes sense only if you assume that Mystique's mutation had slowed down her aging up until she lost her powers, making her look as if she only aged around 35 years in X3. If Wraith was 30-40 within the events of Wolverine, I guess that would place his birth around 1940, so, I guess it could work.
