Members of a crowd celebrating the Lakers’ NBA championship damaged at least one police cruiser and were setting bonfires in the street Sunday night, according to police.

Up to five members of the rowdy crowd that collected near the Staples Center and split off on to surrounding streets were arrested after police declared the gathering an unlawful assembly, police spokeswoman Mary Grady said.

Officer Karen Rayner said one or two police cruisers were damaged and reinforcement officers were called in from throughout the city to help disperse the crowd.

Aerial video footage shown on KCAL-TV showed people jumping on a police car, rocking vehicles attempting to pass through the crowd and throwing flares set up by police. No injuries were reported.

Police department strike teams had pushed people from the immediate area around the Staples Center into surrounding neighborhoods and were attempting to break the crowds into progressively smaller clusters, Grady said.

The department had declared a citywide tactical alert, meaning that all officers on duty were to remain on duty until the crowds had been completely dispersed, she said.

The Lakers beat the Orlando Magic 99-86 in Game 5 of the NBA finals Sunday night to win their 15th championship.

Television reports also showed small crowds of people parading through the streets of East Los Angeles, where excitement over the Lakers’ Game 4 win Thursday night spilled into the streets, with rowdy fans swarming vehicles trying to pass through the area.

In 2000, after the Lakers won their first NBA title in 12 years, fans rioted outside Staples Center, burning police cars and leaving more than 70 vehicles damaged, many at nearby auto dealerships. At least 11 people were arrested and a dozen were injured.

Sunday night’s crowd appeared to be the remaining members of a throng of hundreds of ecstatic fans who streamed onto the sidewalks from the bars and restaurants surrounding the Staples Center, where the Lakers play home games.

Before the game, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said if the Lakers win they should have a victory parade in Los Angeles, despite the city’s budget woes.

Villaraigosa said he would work with the private sector to help fund the celebration, which was expected to occur on Wednesday.
Let's hope we can keep the fatalities at 0

Those rioters are despicable; I hope the police will put them into jails.

I'm all for celebrating, but are you ****ing serious with some of this **** people do? Idiots.

And yet some of you have said Dallas Maverick fans were horrible. I doubt they'd riot the streets if Dallas won a championship. Then again, they probably would since it would be their first. :hoboj:

Conrads to Kobe for getting his 4th ring.

He entered g.o.a.t. status with this one, making it three players (Duncan, Shaq) post Jordan era....

OHHHH, you have proved such a point....ya screw the lakers franchise...they dont deserve to win a championship because they have stupid fans down in the slums

give me a break, you have proven nothing by pointing out *****ebag fans. The fan base is huge and thusly there are bound to be idiots who will cause trouble. The problem fans are only in certain parts of the city.

Point stands, lakers are the 2009 champs and nothing can take away from it...not even your (if it can even be called) an argument....and

really, that was my point? Was it the part where i said "i hope nobody dies" that i made that point or was it the other part where "i hope nobody dies" was all i said?

I am not surprised LA won the championship. Anyone who believed Orlando stood a chance was fooling themselves. I still don't and will never respect this Laker team of arrogant classless individuals.

Kobe finally got his ring without Shaq and I'm sure the sports media will be bowing before him, Phil, and the rest of Los Angeles soon. Orlando has no one to blame but themselves for their poor shooting, poor defense, and the fact that they simply weren't physically or mentally strong to handle the pressure.

So another basketball season is over. While I hate them with a passion I say congrats to LA and their fanbase. Enjoy it while it lasts because you won't win next year.

Good God, how many ****ing times can you say the same damn thing?

Good God, how many ****ing times will you understand that I simply do not care what you or your buddies say or think of me? :wow:

Speaking of which, what does God have to do with this? Last time I checked he wasn't involved in this basketball thread.

Milwaukee is winning it next year....just you all watch

If that happens the world probably will explode. Actually next year I'm thinking it'll be Denver/Boston. But if Milwaukee wins it all I'll be sure to blame you for hell freezing over and the world going into mass chaos.

More trade rumors

Phoenix has also fielded calls from other teams that have inquired about O'Neal, including the Dallas Mavericks, New Orleans Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers and New York Knicks. While getting talent in return is a priority, the Suns' desire for financial relief is real, which means they will likely trade O'Neal and his $20 million contract this offseason.

The Knicks are trying to pawn their troubled center Eddy Curry off on the Suns but are getting nowhere.

While the Shaq-to-Cleveland deal is not imminent, it does have a legitimate chance of coming to fruition.

"It's plausible, it's possible," said a league executive. "But there's nothing happening right now."

From what i heard Walsh was trying to send Eddy and the Mobley trade exemption

Shaq will obviously do what he wishes; but I for one, wish he would retire.
