The Avengers Official Clark Gregg/Agent Coulson Support Thread

That was a great line and it may have been in there for a reason. :word:

Just a wink and a nod to the fanboys, at this point. GA still has no clue what a Life Model Decoy is, since they haven't actually appeared in the movies yet.

Mmph, guess we'll have to trawl through that ridiculous USM trash if we want more Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson.

Even though I DVR USM I can barely stand to watch it. Disney/Marvel should be ashamed of letting Loeb run that piece of crap under their banner.

The concept of Coulson returning as an android doesn't really appeal to me, but the possibility that it was an LMD that "died" does. Or that Phil didn't die of his wounds but Fury lied and said he did so he could manipulate Tony and Steve. Either scenario would end in a living Coulson while causing a major conflict between Fury and the Avengers. The team needed a push to get together, now they need a push to break free from SHIELD's control. Finding out that Fury lied about Coulson and used the man's blood to motivate them would be the kind of extreme betrayal that could force the heroes to leave the spy agency behind.

Hm, I like that :woot:

Ha, nice one. I could live with that. In the comics though, the Avengers were never part of SHIELD but in the Ultimate series, and it's a source of conflict between them and Maria Hill on A:EMH. So maybe this is the push that will make them want to disassociate themselves with SHIELD. Fury Lies!

Maybe Dr Strange will bring Coulson back.

Or perhaps we'll find out that the Coulson who died was a Skrull, even though he has the wrong colour blood.

Or maybe Coulson placed his consciousness into another SHIELD member just before he died, and in the next movie it's driving that SHIELD guy crazy because his katra needs to be reunited with his body. The Search for Coulson, anyone?

I bet he's still tied up and gagged in a broom closet on the Helicarrier.

I like this. I like you.

If the Avengers trilogy sticks to the traditional 3-arc structure (and I don't see why it wouldn't), #2 will be the darkest.

It's really no secret that no one on the team likes Fury/S.H.I.E.L.D. and at best, their cooperation is begrudging. I could easily see those tensions coming to a head in A2 and the partnership being shattered (for a time, at least). If they do bring Coulson back, that would be a smart way to do it. No simple handwave scene ("Oh, hey guys! I'm alive!") in any of the upcoming sequels before Avengers 2 would be nearly as good if he could be used for much larger purposes. And didn't Whedon say he survived? I'd like to think that he wouldn't just flat-out lie to his fans.

...that, and I believe the powers that be would be incredibly remiss to ignore the massive wave of backlash that's erupted ever since the movie came out. If he stays dead, fine, but it's obvious he means more to the fans than they anticipated.

Doctor Strange? :/ Since when was he a part of this?

Whedon never said anything of the sort.

He has said it was Disney/Marvel's decision to kill Coulson, not his, and he knew he'd take the flack for it due to his track record.

You have outlined exactly what I think would work best in a "Coulson Lives" scenario. The four non-SHIELD members of the team already have plenty of reasons to be suspicious of Fury or outright angry at him.

- Stark disliked the secrecy and lies and distrusted Fury.

- Rogers disliked Fury's methods (his use of HYDRA technology) and stated that the Director has the same blood on his hands as Loki.

- Banner was enraged that he was lured to the Helicarrier, where a cage was awaiting him, with plans laid to try and kill him if necessary.

- Thor was angry because of the treatment of Loki and Fury's seeming antagonism towards Asgard.

Given all of the strife and tension already existing between the Avengers and SHIELD, if they ever discovered that Fury lied about Coulson being dead in order to manipulate them, the situation could spiral into open conflict between the heroes and the spy agency. A battle like that might serve as an apt proxy for the Civil War storyline, with SHIELD deciding that if the heroes won't operate under its umbrella they must be regulated and their activities curtailed. While Fury would be reluctant to go so far as to attack or incarcerate superheroes who refused to cooperate, Hill and the World Security Council would be eager to do so. A war between superheroes and the military would be disastrous, especially if it came at a time when an external threat (Thanos, Ultron, Kang) also loomed.

So yes, Coulson's survival could provide yet another catalyst for the Avengers, albeit a negative one.

Or Coulson's survival could just provide the catalyst for the Avengers to disband. They'll go back to what they were doing before with no reason to keep fighting together. He'll just send them into Fox or Sony territory of no shared universes again. ;)

Well... we did have a quote from Clark who said when he talked to Whedon about his concerns of Coulson's survival Whedon said not to worry, that Coulson would survive (maybe MJW is thinking of that). Now, whether Whedon actually said that or not (since it's 2nd hand from Clark - who also told us that Coulson would be revealed to be a Romulan Princess :oldrazz:), don't know... that or he told Clark that before the decision had been made.

As a slightly funny little side note for those interested, I had noticed that on Coulson's nametag he has a middle initial of "J" - I had tweeted Clark Gregg to see what his opinion was on what that stood for, this was his response to me:

Clark Gregg ‏@clarkgregg

Jaekwon...RT RT @Siryn_X: @clarkgregg noticed on 5th ‪#Avengers‬ vwing Coulson's nametag has middle initial "J" what's it stand for?
I love Clark :cwink: *lol*

Some people have argued that Phil Coulson coming back from the dead would be out of place. I would counter that by reminding everyone that characters return from the dead with astonishing regularity in Marvel Comics. It happens so often that the list of "Formerly Deceased" characters runs well over 100, with more being added seemingly every month. Note that there are a lot of Avengers in this category. Bear in mind that the following list, though lengthy, is incomplete.

Let me quote Kevin Feige himself, from an interview with voldemort.com:

Interviewer: I told Clark Gregg that as soon as everyone knows, I'll start a petition to get you resurrected.

Feige: Well, that's the good news, isn't it? Everybody knows, for as realistic as we want our movies to be, you do know that and the comics have shown us that everything is possible. And I think the letters "LMD" are even used in The Avengers at some point.

Feige acknowledged that these are comic book movies which may follow comic book precedent in many different ways, including character deaths. And he was the one who brought up the possibility of LMDs in the MCU. Of course he didn't say that it will happen, just that it can.
