EP Daily Rundown for May 3, 2016

Another big game was announced today! We've got the first official details on Relic Entertainment's Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 3! We also have an update on the new Star Trek TV series, the possible future of Judge Dredd,

Some cool news from Dark Souls and Bloodborne developer FromSoftware, pricey info about the Nintendo NX, and finally, the launch details on the long-awaited Dishonored 2!

Prepare for more real-time strategy action in the Warhammer universe. After years of waiting, Relic Entertainment has finally announced Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 3. Players will be able to command elite hero units and massive armies in all-out galactic warfare, complete with different races and technology from the Warhammer 40K franchise. Relic Entertainment also developed the first two Dawn of War games, as well as another Warhammer title Space Marine, and the more down-to-earth Company of Heroes series. Relic’s general manager Justin Dowdeswell says Dawn of War 3 sets a new bar for the studio, so hopefully that means we’ll be blown away when the game arrives. There’s no release window yet, but we’ll let you know when more details are announced. This will be the first Dawn of War game published by Sega, following the closure of original publisher THQ in 2012.

And a less bloody sci-fi franchise is beaming into the center of the universe. CBS has confirmed reports that the all-new Star Trek TV series will be filmed in Toronto, with production slated to begin this fall. The new show is expected to take place in the classic Trek timeline, set between the events of The Original Series and The Next Generation. It’s unclear if it will focus on one of the several Federation starships named Enterprise that existed during that period, or if it will explore the galaxy in a new ship. The show premieres in early 2017, and will be available simultaneously on television and the CBS All Access digital streaming service.

And the new Doctor McCoy wants to continue cleaning up Mega-City One in a streaming show of his own. Speaking with fans are the recent Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo, Dredd star Karl Urban says that conversations are happening about creating a Judge Dredd TV series for streaming services like Netflix or Amazon. It’s unclear exactly how serious these talks are, so don’t get too excited. Urban and the producers of Dredd have been trying to get a follow up off the ground for years, and it hasn’t happened yet. We’ve still got our fingers crossed. If you need to see Karl Urban in a new sci-fi adventure, Star Trek Beyond warps into theatres this July.

The makers of Dark Souls and Bloodborne are going to unleash their unique brand of pain in virtual reality. The next game from developer FromSoftware is being made for the PlayStation VR headset. That’s according to a staff recruitment video released by the studio, which reveals that they’re currently working on an unannounced project slated to launch on the PC, Xbox One, PS4, and PlayStation VR in 2017. That’s all we know for now. This mysterious new game is likely the same project that From Software president Hidetaka Miyazaki hinted at last week, saying it will be an original IP that isn’t part of an established franchise like Dark Souls or Bloodborne. We can’t wait to see what it is, especially if it’s going to be playable in VR. Since the game comes out next year, expect to find out more soon.

Your wallet might need to take a few super mushrooms if you want to get Nintendo’s next console. Speaking with investors, Nintendo’s new president Tatsumi Kimishima revealed that they will not sell the NX at a loss. In plain words, this means the price of the console in stores will be slightly more than it costs Nintendo to manufacture. This isn’t as common as you might think. Most consoles, including the Wii U, are sold at a loss at launch because it helps drive the initial instal base, which makes it easier to make a profit in the long run. If Nintendo isn’t selling the NX at a loss, the console might cost a bit more than gamers are expecting, which could backfire. Then again, you have to take into account a lot of boring stuff like the difference between the Japanese yen and US dollar, which could help drive costs down. The NX will launch in March 2017.

Mark your calendars, because you’ll be able to return to the shadowy streets of Dunwall this November. Bethesda has announced that

Dishonored 2 will launch worldwide on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 11. Developed once again by Arkane Studios, Dishonored 2 takes place 15 after the first game and lets players choose between playing as returning hero Corvo, or a new playable character, Emily Kaldwin. Like the original, players will be able to use stealth or blunt combat, and there’s a new third option, which is basically a combination of both. We’ll get a better look when the first gameplay from Dishonored 2 is shown off during Bethesda’s E3 press conference on June 12.

Dishonored 2 detailed in Game Informer

Published 2 hours ago. 4 comments.
Introducing some of new protagonist Emily's new skills.

Dishonored-2-Details-GI.jpg

The latest issue of Game Informer has a 14-page cover story on Dishonored 2, offering new details on Bethesda Softworks and Arkane Studios E3 2015-announced sequel recently dated for launch across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 11.

Dishonored 2 is set 15 years after the original game. Following the events that previously unfolded, Corvo Attano, the game’s protagonist, was concerned that people would attempt to assassinate empress Emily Kaldwin, the sequel’s additional protagonist, and spent 15 years training her how to be a magical assassin. You begin the game playing as Emily escaping a coup d’etat.

Afterwards, you can choose whether to play as Emily on her quest to reclaim her throne, or as Corvo with the same objective. It is a single-player game. There is no co-op, as Arkane was unsure how they would design that into their story.

While the game starts in Dunwall, the majority of the game is set in Karnaca, a city inspired by Mediterranean European countries, and is the birthplace of Corvo.

The plot setup for missions is similar to the first game. There will be a public figure doing bad things, and you’ll get information or help from other characters to assist in your goal of assassinating them.

Missions have various options for completion and progression throughout. Some have neutral areas where you can go around and talk to the citizens to get a feel for the city and hints toward your mission. Your base of operations is a boat.

Abilities are now unlocked via an ability tree. Emily, being a new playable character in the series, has a new set of powers to play with. Here are a few:

  • “Far Reach” – A giant hand grappling hook that lets you physically move across spaces and swing around objects. Given the game’s greater emphasis on verticality, these movements are especially important.
  • “Mesmerize” – Stuns multiple guards temporarily.
  • “Domino” – Lets you link four guards together, and whatever you do to one happens to the rest. For example, stun one with a stun mine and they’ll all be stunned.
  • “Doppelganger” – Creates a clone of yourself. You can use this together with Domino to link your clone to the guards, then blow up your own clone.
  • “Shadow Walk” – Lets you slink into the shadows and squeeze into tight spaces.
Corvo has the same powers as he did in the first game, but upgraded and expanded. His “Bend Time” ability can now also fast-forward time, and his “Possession” ability can now be chained between creatures. His “Blink” can assassinate someone through a glass window starting at Level 1.

Both Emily and Corvo are equipped with a pistol, sword, and crossbow, but they look different. The items also have different end-game upgrades.
Stealth and non-lethal options have been expanded to be more up to par with the amount of lethal options, including non-lethal aerial take-downs.
Guards are a lot smarter this time, and can do things like vault around and scale objects to chase you. You can also use them as human shields, or put them in beds to avoid suspicion.
Here are some extra details:

  • They’re trying to make the ending and morality systems better this time.
  • There are difficulty sliders for things like how visible you are in cover.
  • There is now quick saving and quick loading along with checkpoints.
  • Dishonored 2 runs on a modified version of idTech 5 that they’ve dubbed “The Void Engine.”
  • As far as PC mods go, there is a hint about downloading the Bethesda.net application.
For more information, including screenshots, pick up the June 2016 issue of Game Informer.
Thanks, NeoGAF.

Neat. I'll add it to the pile of stealth games I'll ghost through.

Maybe we'll get a new Thief that is more like Dishonored and less like the last Thief. :p

Yeahhhh, there's no way he's playing a good guy.

Dishonored 2 taps Daredevil, Game of Thrones, & Fallout 4 actors for its cast
Game Informer has revealed several of the biggest actors lending their voices to Dishonored 2, and it includes Daredevil's Wilson Fisk (AKA The Kingpin) and Claire Temple, Game of Thrones' Oberyn Martell, and more.

Game Informer has revealed several of the biggest actors lending their voices to Dishonored 2, and it looks like Daredevil's Wilson Fisk (AKA The Kingpin) and Claire Temple, Game of Thrones' Oberyn Martell, and Fallout 4's Codsworth and Darla are taking a road trip to Karnaca, the city at the heart of the supernatural sequel
.

It's quite the assemblage of talented individuals, and should result in some impressive performances. Take a look at the comprehensive list below and I think you'll agree:
Erica Luttrell (Darla, Fallout 4) as Emily Kaldwin
Stephen Russell (Codsworth, Fallout 4) as Corvo Attano

Robin Lord Taylor (Oswald Cobblepot, Gotham) as The Outsider

Vincent D'Onofrio (Wilson Fisk, Daredevil) as Luca Abele, Duke of Serkonos

Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple, Daredevil) as Meagan Foster, Dreadful Wale Captain
Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell, Game of Thrones) as Paolo, Howler Gang Leader
Sam Rockwell (Sam Bell, Moon) as Mortimer Ramsey, Dunwall City Watch
Jamie Hector (Marlo Stanfield, The Wire) as Liam Byrne, Vice Overseer
It'll be a little weird for Corvo to suddenly start chatting (what with the whole "stoic silent protagonist" shtick he pulled in the first game), and there's no way that the Duke of Serkonos is a good guy when he's voiced by the intimidating D'Onofrio, but overall I'm pleased. November 11 can't come soon enough.
