they are all the same, zombies walking around eating people and it just goes on like that in ever film. the only cool zombie thing was thriller

"The only cool zombie thing was thriller"???!!! As in, Michael Jackson's "Thriller"? BWA-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You rock, Flight.

I hereby declare this quoted post, the Hype's POST OF THE WEEK. And oh yeah, Flight? If we ever get a real zombie apocalypse, I hope it starts in your back yard :) And that you're out of ammo that particular day...

Speaking of Will Smith, his injection of humor into serious subject-matter is always annoying, and this would be no different. Now I'm annoyed I forgot to add him to my post in that "name your most hated actor" thread.

Greatest dancing zombies i've ever seen

I agree with a lot of what KenK is saying. People are already bemoaning Will Smith, saying he plays the same character in each movie, that he has an "Oh, Hell no!" moment in each film, and that this movie should have a more serious actor.

Hello people, before Will Smith it was Arnold Schwarzenegger who was going to star. Arnold pretty much plays the same character in every film, has a witty catchphrase in a lot of his films, and I can guarantee you that an Arnold "I Am Legend" would be an action fest as well.

Don't get me wrong. I like a lot of Arnold movies. But he doesn't have the dramatic range of Will Smith. I've already listed the movies he's been in. When he's put in a drama, he delivers. Smith did receive an Oscar nomination for Ali. He's just been more successful with blockbusters which don't require a lot of 'serious' acting. A lot of people might go to his pictures for him, and not so much for the role he's playing, similar to Arnold, Will has reached that star category. I don't think it's a bad thing necessarily.

I also don't think it's the end of the world with Will Smith in this film. He has delivered, and he can deliver. Hopefully TPTB will recognize that this novel is a character study, a gripping, internal exploration of a man who believes himself to be the last on Earth. I don't really want to see a repeat of that Tom Hank's movie Castaway, but that kind of tone, the desolation, and despair should definitely be a part of the film.

I Am Legend Coming Summer 2007

Source: Variety
May 4, 2006

Will Smith is looking to start work this summer on the Francis Lawrence-directed I Am Legend, a move that would give Warner Bros. Pictures a big summer 2007 tentpole, says Variety. The film originally wasn't supposed to get under way until early next year.

The move would amount to a slot swap with Tonight, He Comes, in which Smith was slated to star this summer. Gabriele Muccino took over the helm of that pic after Jonathan Mostow dropped out. Since Muccino is editing Smith starrer The Pursuit of Happyness for a Sony release in December, the studio pushed its superhero-in-existential-crisis pic until next year.

In I Am Legend, based on the Richard Matheson book, Smith plays the last living man on Earth... but he is not alone. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for his blood.

1-For the looks of it, this is pretty much "Ultraviolet" with Will Smith in it.

And guess what? "Ultraviolet" sucked, and will still suck if Will Smith is in it.

2-If they are explaning "the science of the vampires", then I'm SO not seeing it.

Part of the charm of vampires is that they are mythical, magical being. They are NOT a product of science, nor should they ever be.

It's like explaning the "science" of wizards, dragons or werwolves.

3-While you were so busy whining about Will Smith, you simply ignored the REAL reason why this is gonna suck.

You see, this movie features the REAL reason why "I, Robot" was so bad: Akiva Goldsman.

He's the Ed Wood of scriptwriters, he kills every movie he's associated with.

Need I remind you that HE wrote "Batman & Robin"?

Or that it was him who rewrote "I, Robot" and "Cellullar" to change it from suspense thrillers to mindless action movies?

Hell, he wrote "Lost in Space", for cryin' out loud!

So if this movie is failing, it's because Goldsman is writing it.

4-And Francis Lawrence is a piss-poor choice for a director.

"Constantine" was a good movie, but it was NOTHING like the "Hellblazer" comic books.

And this movie needs a director that can stay true to the original source.

The only good thing to happen because of this movie is it will be easier for me to find the book soon.

Er, they explained the science of the vampires in the novel though?

And if you don't like zombies, you have no soul.

I loved Constantine so I have faith, and I will be there when and if this finally hits.

I think Lawrence did a good job with Constantine so im looking forward to how he tackles this

yes, they explained the science of the vampires in the novel, and it was really cool. If you were jewish before you were an undead creature, the faith would be reversed and amplified. So being jewish, the crucifix wouldnt repel you: The torah and perhaps the star of david would. The same goes if you were muslim: the koran would repel you.

other than really that, they explain why bullets dont hurt them, and why stakes kill them. the science used in the book was really good.

Yes, vampires are mystical beings, but in this movie world, they're real overshadowed by myth and legend, much like the vampires in 30 Days of Night.

the movie has to be rated R. I want it faithful, and i want it scary. I want Will Smith to be good in this film, no craptastic one liners and other bad stuff.

Will that happen? I doubt it....which sucks.

Ok, I can't really give a very informed opinion, I didn't read the book, but I've heard about it, and I know some Will Smith stuff. Judging by what I've heard about the book, it sounds serious; not the typical Will Smith stuff. He is, for the most part, a comedy actor. I, Robot was fairly serious, but he still had tons of his little quips. MIB 1+2 are definitely comedy as much as Sci Fi. Will Smith does mostly comedy. That's what he's known for. He might be able to do serious work, but when people think "Will Smith", they don't think "serious actor". They think MIB, Hitch, stuff like that. Arnold isn't exactly a "serious actor" either, but he's more so than Will Smith. Knowing Smith's reputation, the studio'll probably pump up the fun-popcorn-flick factor...more like, say, Dawn '04 than Night '68. Probably more so, even, like, Army Of Darkness, almost...or Slither. And also, the Batman & Robin director?!? To be honest, I think he should be banned from movies altogether, if not locked away from society. And on a side note, I'm not racist, but if a character's white, why make them black? It's simple. You don't really see black characters getting turned white; y'don't see Storm being white, or Blade, or Robbie Robertson? There are tons of good actors, and especially with something like this, which, in the right hands, could probably be pretty big, so why not just stay true?

yes, you should read it. You should buy the book. Not only do you get the novel, but a bunch of short stories, some being the creepiest i've ever read, some being pretty funny in a dark way. Definatly worth the investment.

BlackFilm.com reports that "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise star Johnny Depp will join Will Smith in Warner Bros.' I Am Legend, for director Francis Lawrence (Constantine):

When Will Smith was cast as the lead in the long-awaited adapted film version of Richard Matheson's I AM LEGEND, it was probably the worst kept secret. After all, his name had been floating around the web for the longest time. Until certain outlets that folks feel are the bible of information put the word out to confirm our story, sources tell blackfilm.com that along with Smith, JOHNNY DEPP has been added to the cast.

Depp may be playing Ben Cortman, who is Robert Neville's (Smith) neighbor in the film and the first to get infected, becoming the head vampire.

In Richard Matheson's book, Neville is the last living man on Earth... but he is not alone. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville's blood. By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn.

 Smith and Depp!!!!!!! there's a third of the budget gone already lol

Depp and and Will Smith! This joint's gonna have to be IMAX ONLY, 'cause I can't imagine the presence of both of them fitting on a regular screen!

I'm inclined not to believe this rumour. Cortman was a relatively small player in the original book. He didn't posess much depth either, so it seems strange that Johhny Depp, who's know for playing deep eccentric characters, would attach himself to the role.
