Ive....never thought that deeply about Kevin Smith. Ive found some of his movies funny....The End.

^^^
Ditto. I've enjoyed every movie he's done and i've ROTFLMAO'd at the talks he's done that i've been able to watch.

People like to btich and whine and moan and it is ridiculous.

People are now criticizing Smith for being a comic book fan but not wanting to make a comic book movie? WTF? That is the stupidest complaint against a filmmaker I have EVER heard. Just because he enjoys comics and writes the occasional story every two to three years does not mean he is an action auteur.

His visual style is admittedly (even by himself) very bland and occasionally ugly. His strengths comes from writing. Clerks and Chasing Amy are two of hte most influencial comedies of the 1990s and reinvented the genre in terms of diaologue and raunchy comedies. He knows how to ellict good performances out of most of his actors, which is impressive and while not groundbreaking, Clerks II and Dogma were damn good comedies with some real depth.

Is he crude? yes. Are his films sophmoric? Sometimes. He is a talented filmmaker? Yeah. But because he is popular and has disliked some good films or filmmakers in the past, people seem to want to hate him.

Also, the critique that all his characters talk like him is a dumb one considering that is true for many great comedy writers like Woody Allen or the now-popular (and soon to be fanboy-backlashed) Judd Apatow.

Whatever.

Yeah, here it is.

I can't stand Kevin Smith.

- He talks about comic books like he's an "industry insider", yet he hasn't made a comic book movie.

This is pretty stupid, he owns two comic book shops and has good relationships with many comic book writers and artists and has written books for Marvel and DC, he's a lot more in touch with what's happening in comic books than probably every person who worked on a comic book movie.

- He's a terrible actor (Die Hard 4.0, and anything else).

He's never claimed to be a great actor, but did you really not think he played a paranoid computer hacker convincingly in Die Hard?

- He's a HORRIBLE director. Who gives a crap about anything he's made?

He's made some really good movies, sure they have a lot of dick and fart jokes, but he also fully owns up to that. However, he did show if you're determined enough you can make it in Hollywood

- He's immature, useless, not funny, not talented, and it's a real wonder why he's still in the business.

Obviously other people feel differently, he freely admits he's immature though, as for not being funny, listen to his Smodcast or An Evening With..., that stuff is hilarious, the man knows how to tell a great story.

- He has opinions that are usually idiotic, like claiming that someone as prestigious as Tim Burton would steal something of his from a stupid comic strip. (Yes, he was joking, but the tubby won't let it go).

Never heard about this.

- He sticks his nose in everything that's cool and craps all over it. He appears on a Die Hard 4.0 documentary and acts as if he has something to do with the franchise, even though he spent literally 3 minutes in the fourth movie.

This being the second time you've mentioned Die Hard, I'm assuming a lot of your hate comes from him being in the latest Die Hard, get over it,

- He's the Uwe Boll of Comedies.

That's pretty unfair, I think the Uwe Boll of comedies are the people behind Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans...

- People seem to love him, and I strongly believe that they don't understand what talent is

That is all.

And you do? I think he's a funny guy and that's way I see his movies, to laugh, hasn't disappointed me yet.

Damn Castle is banned and there I was, going to write a HUGE post on what he had to say against Smith.

All in all, Smith is Legend.

anyone that doesn't share your opinion clearly doesn't understand what talent is. this is a true statement and in no way *****ey, or stupid. good on you.

yeah, i totally agree with you... a bit harsh at points but i agree he's overated.

one of his stand up routines was all about his penis and him doing his girlfriend. i cant stand crappy dirty/sex jokes... its just not funny to me, unless robin williams does it..lol.

if it's the story i think you're referring to, he was talking about his first time with his wife. it's hard to appreciate a joke if you're not paying attention to it.

Penny-Arcade is a great webcomic. What are you guys smoking?

I've shared my opinion on Smith before, and it is this. I applaud him for making the types of movies he likes, I've heard his story(making Clerks while in his 20s, giving it his all), I think that's great and shows he has a dedication to what he does. He even seems like a cool person. I have seen a handful of his films and honestly just found them too crude, I don't like his subject matter and don't have much interest in seeing anymore of his comedies. His writing is just too distasteful for my liking.

Smith makes films and does his job, but his movies are most definitely not for me.
