Nintendo Are “Looking At” Bringing Unity To Nintendo 3DS. March 20, 2014 . 11:00am

“We’ve had those discussions and we are definitely looking at that,” Nintendo’s Damon Baker said to Siliconera.

At GDC, Siliconera caught up with Nintendo’s Damon Baker, who is the Senior Manager of Marketing at Nintendo’s of America’s Licensing department. One of the questions we asked Baker is whether Nintendo have plans to bring the Unity engine to Nintendo 3DS.

Last year, Nintendo announced a partnership with Unity Technologies, through which the two companies created a Wii U-specific version of the widely used Unity engine, making it easier for developers to bring their games to the platform. To sweeten the deal for developers, Nintendo arranged it so that buying a Wii U development kit comes with a free copy of Unity as well.

As a result, a large number of indie games using Unity are in the pipeline for Wii U—alongside PC and other consoles—which will help fill a gap in the platform’s sparse library in the months to come.

Unfortunately, since Unity isn’t supported on Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo’s portable system tends to be harder to port games to, often requiring 3DS-specific optimization. And while the Nintendo eShop for 3DS already has a fairly large library of exclusive games, it never hurts to accommodate more developers and make development easier, especially given the system’s install base of 42.74 million. With that in mind, we put the question to Baker: are there plans for Unity to come to 3DS?

“We’ve had those discussions and we are definitely looking at that,” Baker replied.

“Our priority was to get the Wii U build [of Unity] up and done and ready. Because we need a test environment for it, it’s taken a while for Unity to get finalized on Wii U, so that we can actually test against it. So that has been made available now and that is why we’ve got all of these [game] candidates waiting in the wings that are just going through the submission process at this point.”

“Now, we can move on to other platforms and see how we can make those compatible,” he continued, “either with Unity or with additional middleware providers as well.”

“So, 3DS is definitely an exciting platform for us, because we’ve got a huge install base, and we want to take advantage of that. We’ve got a lot of developers that want to take advantage of it. So, we’re working towards that as well. But nothing to announce at this time.”

Is that coming to 3DS, too? I thought it was just consoles and steam

Yup, it's coming to 3DS.

Check out the end of the video. Although, it was just announced that it's been delayed a bit, so it wont come out March 31st. :(

Just bought a 2ds. I was very surprised by how small it is. Really loving it so far. Got Mario kart 7 as well so I rocked the free Pokémon X deal they had on club Nintendo. Phenomenal deal and I don't think it'll be the last like that from them.

It wouldn't be surprising if it was the last. Club Nintendo NOA is a pretty big joke.

It's a huge joke but there is no doubt that deal got them some good sales

Six portable classics are about to hit the North American Virtual Console on Nintendo 3DS! The four remaining Game Boy Mega Man titles AND Mega Man Xtreme 1~2 (of Game Boy Color fame) are nearly ready for their eShop debut, and both Capcom Unity and Nintendo want YOU to decide which one launches first!
Poll is at the link.

EDIT: Btw, for those who may not know, the GB Mega Man games aren't actually ports of the NES games that you can get on the Wii/Wii U VC. I think they share some of the same stuff, but they are actually different in various ways, I believe.

EDIT 2: So, I looked it up to make sure, and I was half right, they aren't completely original and actually combined parts of two NES titles into one (for instance, Mega Man II on GB was actually a combination of Mega Man II and III from NES, except for V, which was it's own original story.

Yup, I just beat MM2 today for the first time in many years. The first robot masters are from MM2 but the levels are a little different, and once you get to Wilys Tower, it's 4 robot masters from MM3. Also, you can slide like in MM3.

Thank you! Glad to see someone else loving the feel of the 2DS.

Anyone here get Rusty's Real Deal Baseball? I got three of the games, and they're fun. Well, two of them were worth the $2 and $1.60 I paid for them, very addicting. The other was mehish. Story is surprisingly sort of depressing so far.

So IGN hated Kirby Triple Deluxe and Gamespot loved it. I'm gonna buy it today. It looks like every other Kirby game ever, and I love Kirby sooo....

Greg Miller liked it a lot.. But he said the downside is that it IS very easy.

It is easy, but I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Running around in a colorful kirby world while hunting for the collectibles is exactly what I wanted that game to be.

Debating between getting Kirby and Mario Golf. Leaning towards Kirby. I played the demo for Mario Golf, and it was fun, but it kind of just made me want to play a real golf game.

I did. I only bought the first game though. Which did you get that you like?

I hear Mario Golf is a HUGE game. So if you;re looking for content, I would go with that.

I'm still waiting on Shovel Knight. Where are you, Shovel Knight?!

Yeah, right? Where is Shovel Knight? I thought it was supposed to be out already.

I seem to remember reading that Shovel Knight ended up having a lot of unexpected technical issues and they wanted to iron out all the bugs before putting it out. I want to say it's supposed to come out this month now, but I can't recall for sure.

I think the games I was talking about in that post was the first one, and then the cage hitting game. Since then I got the umpire one, the catching one, and the the one were you hit the tires. All three are pretty fun. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the umpire game. All of them have been worth the less than $2 I payed for them by miles.

It was supposed to be in March, got pushed back to the end of April, now they say it should be out before June.....so probably first quarter of 2015. :oldrazz:
