Well anyway, according to Boxofficemojo.com, SR has made just under $378 million world wide.

Here's the bottom line:Bishop2 said:That's still an opinion.
Frankly, most everything in this thread is an opinion. There is no "bottom line."

Showtime029 said:Actually it's not only an opinion, it is mixed with fact. It is fact that the film didn't resonate with the general public, all you have to do is check the box office. The opinion in my statement involves WHY it didn't resonate, I think the moviegoers wanted more action and a supervillian. This is coming from somebody who enjoyed the movie, so you can't just call me a "hater". Try something more high society.![]()
There is a "bottom line", WB's bottom line, and it's in the red right now.
When kids were still in school? Uh, it was summer when it was released. Just like all of those other summer released movies that were released...oh I don't know...IN THE SUMMER WHEN KIDS ARE OUT FOR 3 MONTHS ON SOMETHING CALLED SUMMER BREAK. God, first the July 4th weekend was a bad weekend to release the movie on as it is a holliday. Not taking into account that it is the second most desired date to release a film in the summer and many movies that were released on that day made dank bank and became the biggest money maker of that year. Not to mention the bulk of their take being made ON THAT WEEKEND! But oh no, it is bad for SR. Now it is that they released it during the summer. How dare they release a summer blockbuster during the summer months? Why I never! It's an outrage! And outrage I tell ya! The nerve. The unmitigated gaul of Warner Brothers releasing a summer movie during the summer months! And on the 4th of July holiday weekend no less! It's a travesty! Someone over there at the WB needs his ass handed to them on a plate for this clusterf**k of releasing a summer movie in the middle of summer!AVEITWITHJAMON said:SR had the World Cup to go up against in most countries, add to that the fact that it came out at a time when kids were still in school.
And anyway that wasnt my point, my point was, just because a movie makes money, doesnt mean that the general audience liked the actual movie once they saw it.
You forgot that both kryptonite rocks had to be from Addis Ababa.HerosOnFilm said:Singer rehashed STM almost scene for scene, except for a few new things, like Supes' kid. Question is....why? Was he pressured by WB to churn out a movie that would give us that heartwarming Christopher Reeve feel?
This movie had not one iota of ORGINALITY. A supervillian would have helped out amazingly, or, if he was just going to have Luthor, why couldn't he have made him a John Byrne tycoon instead of a slightly more evil Gene Hackman?
STM: SR:
Underground subway lair. Boat lair.
Campy Luthor. Luthor is a wee more "evil."
Saves lois from helicopter. Saves Lois from plane.
Luthor steals Kryptonite. Luthor steals Kryptonite.
Luthor has female that does him in. Same.
Supes arrives in Smallville outtathe sky. Same.
The list goes on and on. This was STM.......but not as good. Just better effects, and even they weren't anything spectacular this side of the Matrix or Harry Potter.
All in all, quite a let-down.

I checked right now, and Superman Returns made more money worldwide than Batman Begins and the Fantastic Four. If Superman didn't resonate, then neither those movies did.Showtime029 said:Actually it's not only an opinion, it is mixed with fact. Facts are facts: Superman Returns was already profitable before hitting screens, like all the blockbusters, thanks to TV rights sales worldwide.Showtime029 said:You're forgetting that this is Superman and that the budget was much bigger than either of those two movies. Superman should not be making less than 200 million domestic and less than 200million worldwide at this point. I liked the movie, but against the box office this movie is not yet profitable. Facts are facts.

Why wasn't MIB, MIB 2, Indepenance day, Armegeddon, Spiderman 2, Forest Gump, War of the Worlds,The Firm, A League of Their Own, Terminator 2 effected by this supposed 4th of July bad release date, or the world cup? Most of the movies I listed above went on to either become or get close to being the most money maker of that year.

Showtime029 said:Isn't it also a fact that the President of WB himself said Superman should have made at least 100 million more? Both Batman Begins and Fantastic Four turned a profit against the domestic box office. That's what studios use as a guage.
You think that WB expected to be defending Superman at this point, which has made 197 some-odd million? Do you think they expected to be pulling in less money domestically than X-Men 3?
You shouldn't have to compare Superman with Fantastic Four, Batman Begins, or even X-Men. Superman should be duking it out with Spiderman, Marvels flagship hero.
As I said, I liked the movie, I saw it twice and it was pure enjoyment. It didn't translate into a box office success, and you can't really argue that. Was it a failure? By no means, but it wasn't what WB thought it would be and they are scratching their heads as to why.
AVEITWITHJAMON said:They are not the only one's, I though SR was one of only 3 movies this year that was genuinly quality, along with POTC 2 and V For Vendetta (although Slither looks good and i havent seen it).
