Singer portrayed Superman in as a general messianic figure, a saviour, moreso than specifically a Christ reference.

And the difference is? He's clearly a Christ Figure in this film. If he hadn't fallen from New Krypton like he was on the cross, died, and risen, there might be some room for interpretation. As such, there isn't a whole lot.

I don't see anything "generic" on Supes' messianic figure. He has basically the exact same origin as Moses, and the same "superpowers" of some icons from the Old Testament (Samson, King Daniel, King David, etc). He's not like Buddah, or Allah, or any other messianic figure you can think of. He's Bible-inspired, Old Testament with the Jesus tale thrown in just for measure, end of story.

The messiah figure would be fine if they didn't try forcing it down our throats.

But it should have played more on hero worship and what it means to be a real hero whether he has superpowers or not.

It also would have been nice if Routh had the majority of the dialouge since he was the star of the movie.

Very dissappointing.

Unfortunately if you want to see Superman done right on screen you have to rent or buy Superman TAS

A Christ-figure is a literary technique that authors use to draw allusions between their characters and the bibilical Jesus Christ. More loosely, the Christ Figure is a spiritual or prophetic character who parallels Jesus, or other spiritual or prophetic figures.

In general, a character should display more than one correspondence with the story of Jesus Christ as depicted in the Bible. For instance, the character might display one or more of the following traits: performance of miracles, manifestation of divine qualities, healing others, display loving kindness and forgiveness, fight for justice, die and rise again. Christ figures are often martyrs, sacrificing themselves for causes larger than themselves. In postmodern literature, the resurrection theme is often abandoned, leaving us with the image of a martyr sacrificing himself for a greater good. It is common to see Christ figures displayed in a manner suggestive of crucifixion as well; this technique is more noticeable in films than in literature.

messiah: One who is anticipated as, regarded as, or professes to be a savior or liberator.

saviour: A person who rescues another from harm, danger, or loss.

In short: Superman is a fireman. He puts outs fires in the movie. Twice. Three, if you count Lois Lane's lighter.

You're right, Superman is a fire department allegory. ;)

So, the code is cracked at last. There are no mysteries left on Earth. We can all die in peace now! :)

Just read this over on Millarworld. Mark Millar originally wrote a pretty glowing review of Superman Returns, but then he wrote this about a week later.

It was a great effort and a true labour of love, but time hasn't been kind to it (one week) and I feel Singer kinda blew it. It needed more Superman Doing Cool Stuff and everything I said above. But I honestly don't think I'd bother watching it again. And bear in mind if I've seen even Superman 4 several times in the cinema. I dunno... I think he just really dropped the ball now. I was high as a kite when I wrote the above because it was the first Superman flick since I was 17, but... It didn't look like 250m dollars. Let's leave it at that.

MM

This is kinda the way I felt about it. I liked it when I first saw it, but over time and even after seeing it again, I actually liked it a lot less.

You're aware than, when he said that he was "high as a kite" while watching the movie, that means drugs, mmkay?

Wait are you kidding me, Mark Millar wrote THREE different reviews, one before the movie, one after the movie, and another one after that? He changed his mind each time? HA HA.

What a PRICK-O Millar must be then. :D

Well since Singer and Jackson both put out stinkers as their last films, perhaps they should join forces and combine films making a whole new movie!! They both seem creatively bankrupt and unable to do anything original anymore, so following their example here is my (not so) original idea.......................

Christ Figure references in SUPERMAN RETURNS were not not exactly piled on, and they were no more blatant than they were in any comics incarnation or SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, or even the original concept from Shuster and Siegel. "Kal-El" and "Jor-El" do mean something. The Christ Figure is an accepted aspect of literature, and can be found in many mythologies.

I just found superman returns to take it more seriously than the previous franchise, which in a way brought these themes to the forefront id say. I do enjoy the previous films as well.

Superman Returns was a tad more serious in tone and thats probably why it struck such a chord with me also. I was always looking for a film that performed the space opera formula in a more straight faced and character driven manner, which star wars was never able to do for me, but singer has come the closest so far.

I liked King Kong. What is your problem with King Kong?

Jackson is greater than Singer could ever hope to be. That's the truth of it all.

I was lucky to win an invitation to the premiere of SR here in my country, the dominican republic, I just came back from watching it, the theater was FULL of ppl, lot's of them wearing all kinds of superman t-shirts, even the girls, and LOTS of kids...

I really liked the movie, I think it's a very good movie, but the ending (after he takes new krypton to space) was a bit anti-climatic, it slows down a bit too long and I noticed ppl (specially kids) start getting tired (they started to stand up right after supes says good bye to jason and lois), but aparte from that it was really good, the action was good (better thatn I expected after all the negative comments here), the special fx where good to me, you still can tell when it was CG supes but i wans't cartoonish to me, so it didn't bother me like in Spiderman for example. The main titles were fun! little good surprise there, and nothing is compared to hearing the John Williams themes in a movie theater for the first time after dreaming about it for so long!

I liked the acting was pretty good too, Jimmy was great!, Spacey was great, he managed to blend the campy Gene Hackman Lex with the sinister lex that a lot of us wanted to see and it worked!, Richard was good, Bosworth was good and Routh, Routh did an awesome Job, when we see Metropolis Clark for the first time, I heard a couple of ppl saying things like: "Wow, he's very much alike (Chris Reeve I suppose), he's perfect".

Bryan Singer can stay if he just throws a little bit of action and a super villian (I'm scared they give this to another director that turns it into crap). So, yeah!! bring on the sequel!!!
