Iron Man 3 Official rate & review IRON MAN 3 thread! - Part 3

Why though? WHY? Tony didn't make a joke. The situation is what was funny. I hardly count a "whatever" as cracking a joke.

It was a humour scene, after we thought Pepper died.

It's like if Gwen dies and Spider-Man hits his head on a wall for a joke during a fight with Green Goblin.

I don't see how that makes her supposed death less meaningful?

I just find this particular complaint beyond petty.

I don't think it's the same as just throwing in inappropriate slapstick. There's a difference between a serious tone being deflated by inappropriate humour, and levity being used to give viewers some relief to stop things being too unrelentingly dark. It's a fine balance, and I think Shane Black pulled it off well.

It's not just some Marvel Studios mandate of "we need silly comedy." It makes sense for the tone of the Iron Man films, and is consistent with Black's other work. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang spoilers, but...

Think of the scene when Gay Perry is shot, and seemingly dies. Harry is sobbing over his body, and Gay Perry's phone starts to ring. His ringtone is "I Will Survive." That's not there to say, "You're not supposed to care he's dead." It's there to give the viewer a moment of relief from the sadness, as ultimately this is a movie where you're supposed to be having fun rather than sobbing into your popcorn.

Her "death" was handled in a pretty weak way.

Re-watched this. I just really like this movie. It's tone is perfect for the character just as The Winter Soldier's perfect for Cap. My only complaint was I hope there were more Mark 42 action scenes.

My Marvel Studios movie ranking:
AVENGERS 9/10
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER 8.5/10
IRON MAN 3 8/10
IRON MAN 8/10
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER 7/10
THOR: THE DARK WORLD 7/10
THOR 7/10
THE INCREDIBLE HULK 6.5/10
IRON MAN 2 6/10

So anyone else think Stark perfected the Extremis formula and used it on himself? Why else would he be able to have the arc reactor removed? It was implied throughout that he had the key to perfecting it. Plus Pepper seems to have been stabilised.

Also gives his final line of the movie another meaning.

No, I don't think so. I think he just simply got the Arc Reactor removed. Pepper, I'm sure he used a reversed formula that he had for Extremis to be removed.

Just rewatched this.

+Shane Blackisms are refreshing (Narration, Christmas, 90's action movie feel)
+RDJ is funny as always
+Paltrow, Favreau, Cheadle, and Bettany were spot-on.
+Good special effects
+Iron Patriot looked awesome.
+"I am Iron Man" & the ending music

-The overall story is just not very compelling from a character or plot POV.
-A lot of the action was fairly underwhelming
-A lot of the jokes and dialogue fall flat
-Several characters don't have a clear voice (Killian's 'turtle' dialogue comes to mind, as did a lot Maya Hansen's scenes and the scenes with James Badge Dale). Not sure if the writing or the actors were off.
-I didn't buy a lot RDJ's more dramatic scenes.
-While I thought Trevor was funny, I didn't like how it felt like we went from 2 villains to 1. There was a lot of build-up with 0 payoff.
-The kid

5.5/10

Yes. Yes he did. Why don't people get that?

IM3 is quickly becoming one of the more underappreciated CBMs of all-time.

Absolutely. It's one of the more inventive Marvel films, but because "Mandarin was a joke!!~!!!!" it's a "terrible" film.

Especially after all the flack they get for supposedly playing it safe. One would think that IM3 and Cap 2 would at least curtail some of those notions, but I still hear it all the time. Seems that some people are content to be parrots without giving what they repeat much thought. Oh well...can't please everybody.

Absolutely! The Mandarin twist was definitely one of the more ballsy things the studio has done, and I applaud them for it. Also, Mandy wasn't even a joke...just the way he is portrayed was. I almost gave TDW props for killing Loki...buuuut they didn't. :l

But I do agree.

Iron Man 3 was finally the start of MCU branching out, the films after 2008 has pretty much the same style and felt like preludes to Avengers, now since Iron Man 3 each film is feeling distinct and like something that can stand on its oun.

I loved Winter Soldier and liked Iron Man 3 largely because they are well made films that took risks, that were a little different from the Marvel formula. That's why I found The Dark World so frustrating, it's a bland, somewhat obnoxious and messy go through the motions movie. I really hope they get an interesting director with vision for the 3rd one and finally make a Thor film that's more than okay to me.

I could go on for days about how frustrating TDW was. What an inconsequential plod of a movie. Seemed to be a crowd pleaser, though.

TDW was MS first real disappointment to me. I bought the bluray, but have little desire to watch it again. :csad:

I don't know...I used to think I liked IM2 (wat?), but I watched it with the SO back in March...and I must've forgotten how boring it was or something, but damn was it ever difficult to sit through. She wasn't crazy about it either (I've been running her through the superhero movie gauntlet :awesome: ) First impressions though, I agree wholeheartedly, TDW was the first disappointment from the MCU so far. It occupies my bottom 3 along with IM2 and TIH. I'm really hoping they do something special for the third movie though; Hemsworth deserves better.

I like IM2, but for the sole reason of RDJ, Cheadle, & Rockwell. I'm not huge on IM2 anymore myself....but I still like it more than TDW. IMO, Thor 2 was just bland in almost every department. IM2 at least has solid visuals.

Hemsworth is perfect as Thor. I feel like Thor is starting to get lost in his own franchise, I hope that is fixed in the sequel.

I thought that Pepper's "death" was actually, dare I say funny. The rest of the film was very good though, the only other thing I didn't like was that whole plane rescue thing. It didn't even turn out to be Tony in the suit.

When Thor as a title is written right, its as a 'team' book. Thor doesn't work nearly as well when carrying the lead load like Iron Man or Spider-man, but serve as the constant with his Asgard/Earth supporting cast filling up a large workload. It's all about the Asgardian family dynamics and so forth.

The movies have succeeded in this for the most part. Problem is they haven't been able to give good characterizations to the rest of the supporting cast outside of Loki.
