We haven't gotten to the point where we need to say this. People act like he made a massive disappointment in Tolkien for God sakes. Hell, I was saying this about Raimi and SM4. Jackson isn't at that point. No where near it.

My God, we haven't even seen the Hobbit films yet.

Oh I know, That's why I don't like that comparison of pulling a 180 like Lucas. He's 3 for 3 when it comes to the LOTR films for me, everything we've seen in those production videos I enjoyed immensely.

Whatever happens with this third film, it seems it won't be able to affect the course of the first film An Unexpected Journey as it's in post-production and gearing for its December opening. Any additional shooting wouldn't happen until after its release.

No. Unless they want to add even more random characters and unnecessary subplots.

I'm not sure about a third movie...I mean I think two is enough to tell the Hobbit Story but a third? That's kind of over kill, I think.

While I'm just getting over my Harry Potter marathon... lol (not really a fan of the franchise but the only few reasons I watch it is because of Emma Watson, Alan Rickman's characters...oh and of course Michael Gambon)... lol anyway... what do you think?? I am just worried about wither or not there is enough material if Jackson goes ahead with a third film. Who knows really.

When this trailer played during the DKR, the theater got real quiet, and everyone seemed to really be into the trailer. I thought that was pretty cool.

There's Aragorn's time spent tracking Gollum, but too much on him will ruin the mystery about the character when we meet him in Bree in FOTR. I suppose they could stuff Part I and II with the history of Thorin Oakenshield's clan loosing their mountain to Smaug and everything. We'll also get to see the White Council and their dealings with the Necromancer as well.

The reaction the news has received lately isn't so much of a case of people not having faith in Peter Jackson. Rather, it just seemed like their was such a clear path to success in adapting the hobbit, its a smaller story that could be well told. Some people had misgivings when it was first announced that they were making two films, but still it was fairly clear that there were concurrent events they could feature and people undeadrstood what they were going for. News of a possible third film just seems like a complete diversion from what at first seemed like an obvious path to a quality adaptation, and it would be disconcerting to hear regardless of who is involved.

Not doubting the quality of the footage but, to be fair, the people of that site are well-known among the Tolkien online community because they always "love" what Jackson does...

Same in both my screenings, but in the second one the kids got excited once they saw Gandalf. There were lots of excited whisperings to with lots of "new LOTR!"

He's already said he is drawing from the apendices at the end of ROTK. Its like 125 pages that tolkien wrote to fill in some holes. It covers various times, events, people, amd places. Jackson used material from the apendices in the LOTR trilogy. At this point these new films are more than just the Hobbit book which is fine. If the apendices arent adapted at a time in the future the rights revert back to the estate.

This has been discussed on the previous pages and jackson has made a few statements about this. At this point he would like to shoot more material to help the hobbit flow directly into LOTR. His statement was that "if somebody wants to sit down and watch all five or six films in one sitting they will flow seamless into one another like one very long film." This possible third film will bring these two film into seamless sync with FOTR. So essentially the third film will be a bridge film. Or they will expand the second film into two films and add the extra material into both.

I wonder what they will call the bridge film? If its purely a bridge film and the Hobbit story ends in film 2 the third film cant be called the Hobbit since it wouldnt make any sense. Someone in here suggested The Chronicles of Middle Earth. Anyone got any other ideas?

Which is utterly ridiculous. The Hobbit is separate. It is something that just doesn't simply flow into the LOTR. It isn't suppose to. Making a film simply to bring the two is just down right bad. And it speaks to Peter's inability to tell a tale these days.

Yeah, I think it's great. I mean I know all these movies, but I think it's cool when the audience also knows about, and is excited about the trailers too.

Seeing the trailer also makes me want to go get my copy of the Hobbit, and read it again.

I'd definitely agree that The Hobbit is far less "epic" in comparison to The Lord of the Rings. But The Lord of the Rings was intended to be larger in scale, it's the ending of the war and the end of the Age. The Hobbit will be far more intimate.

Well, the book is, Jacksons movie version wont be. He makes 3 movies outta it. I predict the clash of the 5 armys at the Lonely Mountain will be more epic in scale than the Pellenor Fields battle. Also Jackson is most likely going to include Gandalf taking on the Witchmaster with the Wizard Council.

I loved the vastness and epicness of those films.

They are out to save the world in the Lord of the Rings. In The Hobbit the story is about a hobbit who is hired to by thirteen dwarves who are going on a quest to get a treasure back from a dragon within The Lonely Mountain.

Here's how it would tie up to the Lord of the Rings if things are changed to tie it all up, lifting from the Appendices in the book of Return of the King. If the forest of Mirkwood wasn't cleared of it's evil, and the dragon Smaug wasn't defeated and the men of Lake Town and the elves and dwarves weren't united. All of that land would of be easy prey for Sauron's army to march right through without resistance, at the time of the Return of the King. Sauron's army would have had a direct path to Lothlorien, and Arwen would of been killed, there would of been no queen of Minas Tirith. Smaug the dragon would of been a servant to Sauron if he had not been destroyed. Without the rebuilding of the town of Dale (at the base of The Lonely Mountain) there would of been no outpost there to later meet Saurons army.

As Peter Jackson said he wanted to shoot more footage to tie The Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings, this would be the stuff. Maybe they will add scenes of The White Council discussing all of this. There's already hints that they discuss some of this; from the panorama picture with the Nazgûl Sword on a table in front of Elrond. We were told by Jackson that we'll find out what Gandalf was doing while he was away from Bilbo and the dwarves, which is expanded from the book.

Or they might shoot additional footage of the members of the White Council and elves invading the fortress of Dol Gulder within the forest of Mirkwood to defeat the Necromancer [BLACKOUT]aka Sauron, where he then escapes, and flees into Mordor![/BLACKOUT]
