One of my friends didn't like TDKR that much because it was the longest movie he's ever seen. I told him next time he's coming over we're watching all three extended LOTRs.

Hell, an hour and forty minutes is pushing it for some.

"Isn't this movie over yet?" I heard this at a showing for a flick that was like 80 minutes.

Must've been one terrible movie.

I'm just afraid that this is a growing trend. In five years I don't want all my movies being split into two or three parts.

I agree about this. It'll be really annoying every time a book is split just for a money grab

You can thank our ADHD culture and the increased competition for this.
I dont think it's the culture at all. I think it's just that studios see ways to make money in dividing films. With HP, WB made an extra billion by dividing it in half. Of course people wouldve seen a 3 hour HP movie but hey more money for the studio.

I dont know how the divide will work for The Hobbit because I havent read it, but I know at least with The Hunger Games dividing the last book will be really risky because it's not as plot driven

People don't have the time to watch a film for 4 hours, unless they plan an entire day around it.

Yeah I love film but Im not gonna sit in a movie theater for 4 hours. When it comes out a DVD sure, but not in a theater.
4 hour movie is just bad for the film goers. You go to see a showing at 9:00 and don't get out until after 1:00 for one movie. And imagine midnight showing for a film like that.

That's what they did when Gone with the Wind came out. But that was like THE event of the year at that time. And studios weren't really in the realm of maximizing profit back then.

Business: that which Hollywood is defined as.

I honestly dont think Peter is doing this for money. The studio may have apprpved it because of the money but Peter pitched it because he wanted to do it.

Absolutely. Jackson has a lot of money already. The man loves this world too much to do it just for money. I mean why would Jackson sit back and rub his hands together and say, "Let's just do a third one so I can get paid more."

Now WB, of course they want this to happen because of more money for them.

But hey, Hollywood is a business. If a director who writes his own ticket asks for money to make a whole other potential tentpole film, of course that studio is going to see dollar signs and allow it to happen.

Usually if its a big film im really hyped for i plan the whole day around it so im content with really long films. I do 10+ hour marathons with tv shows only stopping for bathroom and food breaks so 4 hours really isnt a big deal to me.

But that's to you. For the mass majority of people 4 hours is a long time

and as I said at home it wouldnt be a thing. Stop, pause, lay down, sit up, get up to make a snack, go to the bathroom whenever I want. But sitting in a theater not being able to pause or move that much sounds unbearable to me and Im sure it does to alot of other people

Im not saying its for everyone but there was a time when people allowed things to build. We do live in a very different society with almost everything at our fingertips almost instantly and it translates into film. People want quick stories that give them everything in a small package. They dont want to set for 3 hours. Personally i think the runtime should serve the story and people should set down and be patient. If it requires 3 hours to tell the story well then the story should get three hours. If you cant give it the right runtime just dont bother making the film. Its hard for me to listen to the average joe ***** because of simplistic movies and lack of quality because when a director tries to give us a complex story that develops at an appropriate pace they bicth because its too slow or too long. They want to have their cake and to eat it too.

Yeah I believe Jackson did it because he believes he can make a good film the studio did it so they have a tent pole for the next three Christmases.

Correction: the next two Christmases and summer 2014. I expect WB/New Line to announce the third film's subtitle and official release date in the next few weeks. Anticipate an early June or early July date for that one.

Hmm, interesting... What makes you think they'd release the third movie during the summer?

As one who really liked Jackson's LotR trilogy but haven't read any of Tolkien's books, I'm kinda excited for this. Another trilogy seems intriguing and I'm all for more from this world, as long as it's good. :)

Aww, we even get cute little Middle Earth 3D spectacles.

I see it now, thanks. That's an interesting choice they made to release it during the summer. I wonder what they want to do it for.

Simple. WB/New Line wants a surefire blockbuster for summer 2014... I don't think they'll be able to whip together another DC Comics film until 2015.

So are they going to film more scenes to flesh out the 3 films? or are they just cutting what they already have into 3?

They are adding the appendices that Tolkien wrote to the Hobbit films. So there will be more subplots than before.
