Comics Official X-Men Convention News thread

So it sounds like Fractions going to have a consistant lineup in the upcoming months and it sounds like Iceman and Storm have already booked there places.....

I have a feeling that Psylocke, Dazzler and Northstar will be in it, too. :woot:

Rumor has it that X-treme X-men is getting a relaunch with Beast forming the new team

NOOOOOOOoooooooo!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooo!!

Well I guess if its not written by Claremont it might be ok. Tho why Beast is forming ANOTHER X-Team i dont know. Couldn't they just do that in Legacy and move Rogues solo adventures into a Rogue solo book? (Still class it as a Rogue solo book, even if it is occasionally using kids from limbo noone cares about)

Yeah either that or make Astonishing good again....

Rogue's last attempt at a solo failed so I think they keep her in Legacy bc they dont have much faith in her carrying another book with her name in the title.

I love the idea of Beast forming his own team. I think this X-treme team if it actually happens is a great idea. Problem is though that another 4th core book seems like overkill. I would get rid of Astonishing as its redundant and the constant delays make it irrelevant. Rogue doesnt need Legacy all for her self, so the ideal place for a team led by Beast would be over there

Rumor has it that X-treme X-men is getting a relaunch with Beast forming the new team

Huh, that so? Might explain why Gambit's suddenly a no-go in Legacy when Carey was sure he was going to stick around prior to the con.

What available characters do you guys think should be on Beast's alleged team? I could go for this lineup?

Beast
Angel
Psylocke
Hellion
Iceman
Cecilia Reyes
Dazzler

Rumor has it that X-treme X-men is getting a relaunch with Beast forming the new team

Where was this rumor started? And is it going to be X-Treme, or will it be the X-Club getting their own spin-off? 'Cause the latter would make a bit more sense with Beast's involvement with them. Maybe have the scientists be a bit of the "base operators" with a crew going out and doing missions.

Im guessing X-treme X-men is more marketable than a title called X-Club. I read the rumor on another board that said that Marvel was restarting X-treme next year. Nothing concrete but the Beast image kinda makes sense if it does turn out to be true

And you thought Psylocke had been through a lot in her recent appearances in Uncanny X-Men. Just you wait.

November will see writer Chris Yost head up a four issue Psylocke miniseries with art by Harvey Tolibao which will kick off with a trip to Japan and a reunion with Matsu'o Tsurayaba. Madness, violence, and ninjas follow.

We spoke with Yost for more on what readers can expect in the coming miniseries.

Newsarama: First off Chris - you were an X-Men fan long before you got into weaving their tales - what's your first X-Memory?

Chris Yost: Not as long as some. The very first time I read X-Men in a comic was when Spider-Man took them down in Secret Wars #2. I had no idea who they were... although I'd seen Nightcrawler in an issue of Amazing Spider-Man and didn't realize it.

Then I picked up Uncanny a while after that... but the issue I picked up had Forge, Illyana, a powerless Storm, Dire Wraiths and Rom Spaceknight. And Illyana Rasputin and Amanda Sefton. So, it was awesome... but I had no idea who the hell they were. And they didn't have Wikipedia back then. But I was hooked.

NRAMA: Obviously, you follow along with the series, and know what's coming up, so what was your reaction when it became clear that Psylocke was coming back in a big way in Uncanny?

CY: My reaction was 'Finally.' Psylocke is one of the new new wave of X-Men, one of the ones that I got introduced to as I read the book. Her, Gambit, Psylocke, Longshot, Dazzler... the Silvestri/Mister Sinister/Morlock Massacre days. The anything could happen days.

NRAMA: So spell things out a little for where this miniseries picks up with her - Betsy is back, and Kwannon is gone, as per what Madelyne explained to the Sisterhood?

CY: This is post Sisterhood, so Betsy is back and Kwannon is gone... but Betsy is in Kwannon's body. Elisabeth Braddock's 'birth' body is dead. Again.

NRAMA: Again. Since we're talking about Madelyne, where does Besty fit in in your mind, in regards to the psychics of the X-Men’s world? Just how powerful is she?

CY: Betsy is one of the planet's most powerful telepaths... of course, there aren't that many left. She's not Xavier or Jean Grey level, but she can hold her own. But what she can do that the others can't is focus her telepathy into a psychic knife. So she can physically and psychically kick your ass, and look amazing doing it.

NRAMA: Groundwork out of the way, let's talk about your miniseries - was this something you volunteered for, came up with, or were just the guy who picked up the phone and said, "Hell, yes, I'll write it!"?

CY: Much like the recent Storm mini, editor Daniel Ketchum called me up and asked if I'd be interested. I can't imagine a character that I'd answer 'no' for, but with Psylocke, it was an easy decision.

NRAMA: While this starts as Betsy looking to do the right thing, it quickly becomes a revenge flick on paper. Who is she gunning for?

CY: Matsu'o Tsurayaba. But wait, you say... the two of them made their peace! She's got nothing against him. Well, just wait.

NRAMA: Oh, like we’re going to let you go with that... Why's she got such a mad on for Matsu'o and figures she must stop him?

CY: Matsu'o does something pretty unspeakable. For a very simple reason, he hurts Betsy in a very personal, very violent way. It's pretty shocking, and at first glance non-sensical. But by the end, it will all make sense. Fingers crossed.

NRAMA: What's your take on these eddys that flow off the main X-Men current like Psylocke and her whole adventure? In a way, you could argue that it was almost an afterthought when Betsy and Kwannon were mashed up, and here, a couple of decades later, we're still telling and reading stories about it...

CY: This is a story about Betsy coming back to the world, trying to figure out who she is and what her place is... and having an option taken off the table in a horrific way. Betsy has been on a rollercoaster, that's for sure. There's a laundry list of weirdness and complexity that's been heaped on her, but at her core, she's still Betsy. She's a hero, and a fighter. She's got an edge. She's sexy as hell, to the point where Cyclops finds himself staring at her.

This mini does touch on the 'two bodies' bit, but it's the set up for a pretty personal conflict. It's about revenge, but it's about mercy. After everything Psylocke has been through, does she have any humanity left?

NRAMA: What do you want this miniseries to do for Psylocke as a character when it's all said and done?

CY: I want this mini series to remind people how and why we're still telling stories about Psylocke. To show the youngsters why she kicks ass, and remind the rest of us what we love about her.

NRAMA: Can't let you go without a tease - how does issue #1 kick off?

CY: Psylocke kills some guy.

Beast
Angel
Psylocke
Hellion
Iceman
Cecilia Reyes
Dazzler

That would be great. I'd add just 1 more. Maybe Northstar, Karima, Surge or Mercury? :woot:

Yeah I really, really enjoyed this guy's art on the Avengers: Initiative tie-in to Secret Invasion. His stuff is like McNiven crossed with minor anime influences. Looks great colored too.

Welcome to day 2 of CBR's live coverage from Comic-Con International in San Diego. Marvel held its X-Men panel Friday morning, moderated by Jim McCann and featuring Marjorie Liu, Daniel Way, Jason Aaron, Peter David, Chris Yost, Craig Kyle, Matt Faction, and editor Axel Alonso.

McCann began the panel by singing 'Happy Birthday' to retailer Stephen Meyer.

Fraction began by talking about "Dark Avengers/X-Men," which has "an ending no one will see coming, that's for sure." He said that ending would feature "some of the most incredible Mike Deodato art you've ever seen."

David said that "X-Factor" 50 would wrap up both the present and future storylines and set things up for the next year.

Jason Aaron's next "Wolverine: Weapon X" will take place in a mental institution, with a man named Logan believing he's gone crazy.

Daniel Way then talked a bit about Deadpool running up to issue #900. After proving to himself he's the best mercenary, Deadpool is questioning his purpose. "What happens when the stimulus is taken away? Does he still exist? He doesn't," Way said. Deadpool will try to be a hero and try to join the X-Men, which doesn't go well.

In "Dark Wolverine," Daken will "be taken down a notch," Liu said, "and it will be interesting to see his reaction to that."

McCann then announced that Daniel Acuna will be the new artist on "X-Men Legacy."

Then, Magneto returns in Uncanny in September, with the Nation X storyline. "Magneto is gifted with a sense of timing," Fraction said, and "we're going to see where he's been and what he's been up to."

The next slide showed Wolverine fighting Skaar. "Wolverine has to change his tactics completely," Way said. "Everything he does, Romulus sees coming, so he has to do something entirely off the wall." He also said he has to go to a certain character, and "when he goes to Bruce Banner for a favor, he runs into his pissed-off kid."

"X-Men Legacy," "X-Force," and "New Mutants" crossover in "Necrosha." "We have been building to this since 'New X-Men,' when we took Wither and Destiny away," Craig Kyle said. "This is our chance to bring back some characters that have been lost to us. Some that we killed. Many."

"This is the rise of Selene."

"All of the stuff we've been doing with Black Queen, this is the big payoff," Yost said. A "Necrosha" one shot in October kicks things off, but things will start to build in "X-Force" 18.

After opening the floor to questions, a female fan said the Madrox/Layla kiss was "creepy" because he'd only known her as a child. "Some time has passed," David said of their time together in the future. "For my comfort level, I would have liked it to be two years. But I don't have that kind of time." He described Layla as Madrox's lifeline, and said that without the absorbed baby event, he would not have kissed her. David also said Layla and Madrox did not sleep together and there will be some pullback from that romance--"on Madrox's part, not on Layla's. Because she's lived through those years and has no problem being aggressive."

"We've seen art on the entire first issue" of "X-Force: Sex and Violence," Yost said in response to a question. "It's going to be a fun adventure with a lot of killing."

"It's really an intimate story between Domino and Wolverine," Kyle said. "It's about Domino getting in over her head and Wolverine not wanting to drag the rest of team into it."

It's coming out "in the future," Yost said of its release date. "When Layla is an adult," McCann added.

Will "X-Factor" and "Uncanny" crossover? "Not for lack of wanting, but the dance card's pretty full," Fraction said. David joked that fans on the one hand ask to see that, but when "X-Factor" crosses over many complain. He said if there was a compelling story, they would do it.

A fan thanked the writers and Mike Carey for tying together lingering story threads. He asked about an unresolved story from Chuck Austen's run, a story it seemed only Matt Fraction remembered. He said he had considered picking it up, but thought it would require explaining too much to readers.

Any chance at Deadpool Noir? "There's always a chance," McCann said. Part two: any chance Zombie Deadpool Head will make it into Daniel Way's "Deadpool?" "Yes!" Way said, though he may have again just been agreeing to a chance. "You've just committed to writing Zombie Deadpool Head," McCann laughed.

Fraction and Brubaker have been planning Magneto's return since "at least #500," Fraction said.

The next question was about gay superheroes like Northstar and if there were any challenges in writing them, creatively or editorially. "It wasn't a big deal," David said of writing the Rictor/Shatterstar kiss. "It was panel 5 of a six-panel page." He noted that fans have been asking for Shatterstar to come back and to pick up with Rictor where they left off. "I think we will eventually reach a point where two men being romantically involved in a comic book will be no more surprising than a man and woman being involved." David was roundly applauded for his remarks.

Liu said that Daken will "do anyone and anything" to achieve his goals and he's "past that kind of identification. He's beyond it." Way added that Daken's sexuality will be addressed later on, but it's more about his personality. "He's no more homosexual than he is heterosexual. It's about control."

"For me it was as irrelevant as haircolor or flight," Fraction said of writing Northstar. The character was added because Cyclops, as a tactician, realized that he had no groundspeed on his team.

In response to a question about Apocalypse and the Celestial, David said it won't come up in X-Factor. "We only use guys who look good in a trenchcoat and fedora," he joked. "I only brought back Shatterstar when I figured out how to make him look good in that."

Alonso said that "you will be seeing Dupe pretty soon."

Hulk vs. Wolverine Family Feud? "Wait, 'Survey Says' Family Feud? Because I would do that," McCann said.

Asked about the characters they'd like to work with, Aaron said he would like to see more Fantomex, while David would like Nightcrawler in X-Factor. Kyle said "Deadpool will be coming into the mix" in X-Force. Fraction said "I can't answer, because the person's coming back," but not in Fraction's story so he didn't want to spoil it.

Asked about more screen time for Strong Guy, Peter David said, "We're going to be giving Guido more to do, if nothing else because he's skeeved about Rictor and Shatterstar. Which he finds strange because he considers himself pretty liberal."

Fraction said there's "big stuff coming up for Psylocke. Not to be lascivious, but wait til you see Terry Dodson draw Psylocke."

Return to blue and gold teams for separate books? "God, I hope not, strategically I hated that," Fraction said. He said that lesser-seen characters will get their chance. "It's a balancing act. We love everybody. Would you rather see somebody who makes sense in the story, or someone who's shoehorned in and doesn't do anything because they have nothing to do?"

"Each runs independent, but runs parallel and complements," Alonso said of the X-line, noting that each title has a different feel even if they use similar teams of characters.

Shatterstar as son of Dazzler and Longshot? David is considering addressing this, but is undecided.

11:25
And we're in!
11:25
Panel moderated by Jim McCann, joined by:
11:25
Axel Alonso
Matt Fraction
Craig Kyle
Chris Yost
Marjorie Liu
Daniel Way
Peter David
Jason Aaron
11:25
Fraction on Utopia: "an ending nobody will see coming, that's for sure. things get worse before they get better, and even 'better' is relative."
11:26
Daniel Acuna is new ongoing artist on X-Men Legacy starting in September. Mike Carey still writing.
11:26
Magneto is back in Uncanny X-Men—slide says "Nation X Begins," September 2009. Loud applause for Magneto.
11:27
Fraction: "The slow train is coming. We're going to learn why he's back and what he's got up his sleeve, which is something we've actually not seen before."
11:28
Fraction also says Magneto is a "blast to write."
11:28
Way is talking about an upcoming Wolverine Origins story with Wolverine fighting Skaar.
11:28
Way on the current Romulus story. "He has to come up with a plan that's completely off the wall." He = Wolverine.
11:29
Earlier (playing catch-up due to wifi connection issues), David plugged the upcoming X-Factor #50, and said of the current issue #46, "You see how everything starts coming together and the threads draw tighter and tighter."
11:30
Quick mention of New Mutants.
11:31
Necrosha is up, an October 2009 X-Force/New Mutants/X-Men Legacy crossover. "This is an opportunity to bring back character's that's been lost to us. Some of them that we've killed," said Kyle. "This is the rise of Selene."
11:31
Yost: "Starting next issue, in #18, you're going to start seeing all of this kind of come together. In October, it just blows open wide."
11:32
More catch-up, Jason Aaron on Weapon X #6: "It opens with Logan in a place we haven't seen him before. He's locked in a mental institution in a padded cell."
11:32
Kyle says "16 million mutants" will be brought back in Necrosha.
11:32
Q&A time!
11:34
A fan told David that she thought the Jamie Madrox/Laya Miller relationship "creepy." David: "Some time did pass. If I wanted to be faithful to what my comfort level would be, the kiss would probably take place two years down the line. I don't have that kind of time. I tried to finesse it as much as I could, with Layla saying, 'even when I was a kid, I wasn't really a kid.'"
11:35
Some more catch-up, Aaron on Yanick Paquette's art in Weapon X: "He gets to draw some of the craziest stuff you've ever seen in a Wolverine book."
11:35
Way on Deadpool: "He's going to try to be one of the good guys, but he has no real idea how to do that. He tries to join the X-Men. It doesn't go well."
11:35
"Can he use that same insane skill set for good," pondered Way.
11:36
Liu speaking about Daken in Dark Wolverine: "He's going to be taken down a notch."
11:36
OK, catch-up done. Back to real time! David still talking about Madrox/Miller. He has clairfied that they have not slept together. Alright.
11:37
Yost on Domino/Wolverine miniseries: "The story has a little bit of action in it, a little bit of love. If you like X-Force, you're going to like this. It's really more lighthearted than what we normally do. It's going to be a fun adventure, with a lot of killing."
11:38
The fan: "People are going to die in your book?" Yost: "We're going to try something new."
11:38
No schedule yet for it, Kyle says.
11:39
"Are we going to see Wolverine breaking down in the future?" McCann: "Didn't you see Jason Aaron's cover? He's in a mental institution."
11:40
The piece of art on the top of this page is from Necrosha, by the way (you've probably figured that out).
11:40
McCann opened the panel by saying "welcome to the Blackest Night panel!" Teehee.
11:41
Fan thanks Fraction for "making Cyclops a badass."
11:42
He then asks if X-Factor and Uncanny are ever going to "go into each other." David says "it's not going to be, 'you know what, we should really do a crossover in order to help sales. It's kind of like, if Matt and I say, 'you know what would be really cool, if this happens, and we do this.' That kind of genuine excitement from creators is the kind of thing that gets people really stoked."
11:43
"It's got to be real with the characters, it's got to make sense with the characters," Fraction says.
11:44
A fan asked if we'll ever see Carter and Annie from Austen's Uncanny X-Men run again. Fractoin said "There's something to be done there, I don't personally have any plans right away."
11:46
More from Yost on Necrosha: "Because (Selene's) actions are so huge, you're going to see it bleed over in New Mutants and Legacy. You're going to see a lot of characters in this book. In all three books."
11:47
Well the zombie Deadpool head make its way to Deadpool proper? "Yes," Way says, likely facetiously. "He might just be in like, the corner of a panel."
11:49
How long were the plans for Magneto to return in the works? "At least since #500," said Fraction, adding that it's not necessarily a shock that Magneto would eventually come back.
11:50
A fan in a Northstar costume asked David about the Rictor/Shatterstar relationship: "It wasn't a big deal," David said. "I thought, 'this would be a really good time to stop dancing around it. To me, it wasn't a big deal. It was panel five of a six panel page."
11:50
"That was pretty much that," he continued. "It didn't seem like a big deal. The reaction was big, and positive, for the most part. I think we will eventually reach a point where two men being romantically involved in a comic will get no more of a surprised reaction than a man and a woman involved in a comic book." Applause for that.
11:51
"Some people actually accused me of that for shock value," David said. "I think someone saying, 'two men kissing is shocking,' says a lot more about the speaker than the event does."
11:52
Liu on Daken's sexuality; "He's past that sort of identification. He's beyond it. It doesn't matter him." Way: "it's something we want to explore later on, but it's going to be an exploration of the character, not his actions. He's no more homosexual than he is heterosexual. It's not sexual, it's control." "And power and manipulation," added Liu.
11:53
"We didn't want people to think that we were doing it to be shocking," Way continued. "That's why we danced around it at first, then ran right into it."
11:54
Fraction on Northstar's role in Uncanny: "To me, it's as relevant as hair color, or, flight." He then repeated his comments from yesterday's Mondo Marvel panel that he added Northstar to the team because the X-Men had no ground speed.
11:56
A fan commented that it seemed that "each book was kind of in its own solid universe." The answer was in the form of returning to the "Nation X Begins" slide. Hmm.
11:56
"What does 'Nation X' mean?" Fraction said he can't explain at this time.
11:58
A fan from Greece asked about the Milligan/Allred X-Force/X-Statix. Alonso said that there are plans, and that both Peter Milligan and Mike Allred are intersted in doing something. And we'll see Doop soon.
12:01
A fan asked the panel who they'd want on their "dream X-Men team." Aaron mentioned Fantomex, David said he'd love to use Nightcrawler in X-Factor. Yost said he loves Cyclops, Kyle said that Deadpool will be "coming into the mix" in X-Force. Fraction said he can't say because that character is coming back.
12:02
Way didn't pick a character, saying that "you can't completely just dump on one character because it's going to be someone's favorite character. You just treat them with respect."
12:04
A fan just asked Peter David to bring the Pantheon to X-Factor, but the writer said that he didn't think they'd fit in, even though they'd "look good in fedoras and trenchcoats." The same fan asked if Strong Guy would have more of a role, and David said he would, and that he's a bit "skeeved out" over Rictor and Shatterstar, which is a surprise to the character, who considers himself a liberal intellectual.
12:04
The same fan asked Aaron about John Wraith. No plans right now.
12:04
Next person up asked to bring back Jubilee. Not much of a reaction, but Fraction seemed to indicate that it was possible.
12:06
10 minute warning!
12:06
Fan thanks Fraction for bringing Psylocke back to the X-Men. Fraction said the fan should look forward to Terry Dodson drawing the character.
12:07
"Is there going to be in the future, kind of a return to the blue and gold, spearate books, separate teams kind of thing?" Fraction said he hated that, and never understood that. "If it made sense for Nightcrawler, Dazzler and Colossus to get in a car and drive together, I would want to do that."
12:08
Fraction on Iceman, who the above fan specifically asked about: "Bobby's got stuff coming. There were only so many stories we could tell, and so many things we could handle at once."
12:09
Alonso: "I think right now, with the titles we have right now, are independent but run parallel, and compliment each other. Our goal here is to give you a lot of options, and our best case of scenario is that you buy all of them."
12:11
McCann is asking for yes/no questions. Five minutes!
12:11
Fan asked for favorite X characters. That's not a yes or no question.
12:11
Liu: Jubilee, Aaron: Longshot, Yost: Cyclops.
12:12
McCann picked Dazzler, of course.
12:13
Favorite X-Men stories (also not a yes or no question). McCann: Mutant Massacre. Way: "I couldn't really pull one out." David: Days of Future Past. Liu: Operation Zero Tolerance. Fraction: "I like the one that, despite living in a world that fears and despise them, the X-Men team up and overcome incredible odds. I think Paul Smith drew it?"
12:13
Any plans on addressing the suggestions that Shatterstar is the son of Longshot and Dazzler? "Whether I'm going to address that squarely, I haven't made up my mind," David said.
12:14
Will the finale to the Messiah Complex trilogy involve Jean Grey? "What? Jean Grey's dead," said Fraction. "And you call yourself a fan."
12:14
Panel over! Stay tuned for live coverage of DC's Batman: New Dynamic panel in 15 minutes.

Huh. Someone's coming back that Fraction wants to write? Jean? I can't think of anyone else interesting that could possibly come back that he'd want to write.

They already told everyone Magneto is coming back. This is someone we don't know about yet. Look in the second X-Panel recap after the 12:01 mark.
