Old MCU Fantastic Four Discussion Thread

Here's the thing.... I was here the whole time and the whole MBJ thing was never that big a deal, at least around these parts.

It became a scapegoat for the film-makers and supporters of the film to cast every detractor in the same negative light when, from what I could tell, there weren't that many folks here who were actually that up in arms over it. Most of the discussion on the hype centered around how terrible every single aspect of that movie looked and sounded from day one, and the MBJ thing was just one small part that some people didn't particularly care for.

If the film-makers had actually, you know, made a good movie, I don't think it would have been brought up so much. So yes, the MCU could totally cast the human torch as a black guy and it would be fine because they'd likely make a good movie out of it.

Personally, I have faith that if Marvel decided to cast a black guy as Johnny Storm, they'd have the integrity to *also* cast a black woman as Susan Storm. Rather than, you know, the Aryan Ideal.

After two failed attempts at making a Fantastic Four movie

this is no time for Marvel to be experimenting

They just need to look at it as if they did things back to front. The Fox films can be viewed as the experiments and the MCU one as the straightforward classic adaption.

Marvel has usually stuck with and cast actors and actresses who look a lot like the heroes from the comics with their leads. I don't think the Fantastic 4 would necessarily change that. I do think Reed or Ben are the two who could possibly be changed and I wouldn't be opposed to it depending on the situation.

I'm all for Oscar Isaac for Reed, if Marvel thinks he is the best fit.

Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin , or who ever it was he was suppose to be , I still haven't quite got that one figured out

and

Tilda Swinton as the Ancient one

twice Marvel had the opportunity to cast Asian actors and didn't

The Fantastic Four:

Oscar Isaac as Reed Richards
Taylor Schilling as Susan Storm
Connor Jessup as Johnny Storm
Ron Perlman as Ben Grimm
Javier Bardem as Doctor Doom
Doug Jones as Silver Surfer
Anthony Dale as Prince Namor
...and Danny DeVitto as the Mole Man

I like a lot of this. Especially Isaac and Bardem.

That is ******** of the highest order. The MBJ casting, again CASTING alone, with no look at the film itself, not one second, was a firestorm, no pun, upon being made public. It's rewriting history to say anything else.

And the response was laced with a lot of ugliness.

If one wants to talk about the reaction once more was seen or after the film was released that's one thing but I am seeing a lot of conflating going around. Those are two separate moments, the actual first look at the movie and the announcement of Jordan as the Torch. The announcement alone showcased a very reactionary and ugly, and yeah, racist side of the fandom.

Why will they favour that? They didn't favour that for Cumberbatch or Rudd. They went older with them. If Strange were too young he just wouldn't have had the same gravitas as he does.

They could get someone like Matthew Goode, who has also worked with Cumberbatch before.

Nah, he's too much of a no-name - they need bigger names to push this

I think going with relatively unknowns would be better (and cost less). I want these actors to completely encompass the characters, so that they are almost impossible to separate from them. That is very hard to do with the bigger named actors.

I think Doom and the thing need to be done Darth Vader style or else we will end up like the last films where they kept finding excuses to unmask them. Cast a no name jock type as pre transformation ben grimm, and then someone who can do the voice as thing.

Hugo weaving as V has been the exception rather than the rule when it comes to comic book films

I wouldn't worry there are more asian actors in films than white actors.

I completely agree with going the Vader route with Ben and Doom.

Kingsley IS Asian. Just not Chinese.

Yeah give him that haughty max von sydow voice. The voice is what is going to make doom rock.

But everyone, we haven't even discussed the most important issue! Who will play Herbie?

I wonder how many of you here would be Pissed if Marvel Studios would cast a Black Johnny Storm again , would it be a Michael B Jordan Situation or Hey now its Ok because he is in the MCU Situation?
that depends. will they keep the family dynamics intact by keeping Sue as a blood relative and therefore black too? No problem with that.
will they take a crap over everything like the Fant4stic. yeah, I'll riot. Not because of something shallow as skin colour. but because of fundamental changes of the dynamic between 50% of the team's members. Just like last time

:crso:
I'm still thinking they should have cast a white guy as the Black Panther ,

:whatever: Living up to your screen name I see...

In terms of Doctor Doom, I'd like to see something reminiscent to Alex Ross' design.

I also quite like the third mask in the bottom row of this fan art.

Starting to think you need to introduce the F4 in another film before they get their solo film, or at least a couple of them.

I think it could work great if Reed and Sue showed up in Dr Strange somehow or even Guardians 3.

Personally hope Strange and Reed Richards knew each other prior somehow.

This isn't a casting thing, but more an effects thing. I want Sue's force fields to almost look like clear glass, not that blue thing in Fant4stic. When there hit then they become slightly iridescent just for aesthetics and they should look solid when attacking or defending.
It's a way for the audience to see the force fields that are meant to be invisible, without going too far.

I also hope they give her action sequences so that we can she all the different things she makes with them. She should be a force to be reckoned with and we'd get to see why she is considered the most powerful member of the team.

We need Chris Evans' Cap in this and to share a scene with the new Johnny Storm and say "You know what? You remind me a bit of myself when I was younger" :oldrazz:
