And yes, the show is crap, but I give the panel here credit - this is a fairly accurate representation of how the general public will perceive this....most folks aren't nearly as well versed in comic book lore as we are here but something as iconic as the Joker's look goes without saying.

And as for Ledger's reputation - sure, lots of folks have done gay roles - but none quite as notorious (or graphic) as Ledger's, which, along with attention he has received from getting an Oscar nod for said role, pretty much has branded him in the public eye.

In other words, he's typecast.

This is a perennial -- and dumb -- fanboy gripe, and you should ignore it. I don't buy it, and I especially don't buy it when it's said by some know-nothing dorks on a TV talk show.

A good actor or actress can convince us that they are ANYTHING -- that they're a vigilante who dresses up like a bat, the captain of a starship, a rock musician, Abraham Lincoln, a crazed killer who looks like a clown, Queen Elizabeth, a Klingon, a robot, or whatever. They're not required to be experts on every single tiny little geek detail of their role just to pacify slobbering fanboys who live in their parents' basements.

This attitude that "only a fellow fanboy/geek can accurately portray a fanboy/geek obsession" is patently stupid. How many "fanboys" do you know who are successful actors/writers/producers/directors? Not many, because the "fanboy" attitude gets in the way of being a PROFESSIONAL who DELIVERS when millions of dollars are at stake. So consequently, most fanboys are relegated to jobs where their biggest responsibility is saying, "hey, we're out of copy paper again!" or "do you want fries with that?"

And finally, I am so tired of this "Brokebat Mountain" crap that I could puke. Good grief -- has it occurred to any of you that AFTER "The Dark Knight" is released, Ledger is going to be known as the new Joker, rather than a gay cowboy?

I think the guys who are obsessing over Ledger because of his last big film role need to seriously grow up. If he'd last played a scary serial killer in an Oscar-nominated film, we wouldn't be having this stupid debate at all (except then you'd have fanboys whining that Ledger as the Joker showed "no imagination!")

Anyone can express any opinion, pro or con, about how the Joker is going to be portrayed in TDK, or if they think Ledger is going to do a good job, based on ALL of his previous roles.

However, what I think is silly is pre-judging him as the Joker because a.) he's not a huge comic book fan, or b.) because his last role he played -- gasp! -- a gay cowboy. Both are irrelevant to whether he can play this role or not, IMO.

There is a difference between giving a well-informed opinion, and an ignorant one. The ones presented by these people are the latter.

The only reason that Heath Ledger gets as much **** as he does is because Brokeback Mountain received much more attention than most movies revolving around gay characters. It was a major motion picture that got alot of Oscar buzz. Christian Bale played a gay character. Nobody made a huge deal about him playing Batman. Liam Neeson played a gay character. Nobody made a fuss about him. Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, they also played gay characters. YET NOBODY HAD A PROBLEM WITH THEM. So why are people crying "Brokeback Batman" over Heath Ledger? He's not the only damn actor to ever play a gay character. It says absolutely NOTHING about his ability to play this character. He's an ACTOR. If Brokeback Mountain was an indie-film, I GUARANTEE you nobody would've given a ****. But no. Because it was a big film, suddenly he's gay. Gotta love the intelligence of movie-going society.

I also love how Heath Ledger is suddenly the only actor to ever be in mediocre/bad movies. Christian Bale had "Reign of Fire." Michael Caine had "Austin Powers 3." Gary Oldman had "Lost in Space," and Liam Neeson had "Star Wars Episode I." These are just to name a few examples. Every actor has there "A Knight's Tale" role.

If you don't like Heath Ledger because his performances just never clicked with you, fine. That's a perfectly suitable opinion. Nobody can force you to enjoy somebody that you just don't. But to dismiss Ledger as The Joker because he played a gay cowboy (damn good too, I might add), or because his earlier roles had been in mediocre films, that is simply pure ignorance, considering that MANY of the Batman Begins actors have been in the same boat.

And like somebody said earlier, I honestly doubt Nicholson has ever lifted a comic book in his life. Go figure the hypocrisy.

this reminds me of when Daniel Craig was cast as Bond. And Casino Royale didn't have a great buzz EARLY on, until the release. Then most of the haters were silenced.

There is nothing more infuriatingly, pathetically idiotic than the fanboy obsession that actors must be comic book afficionados to properly portray a character.

It's no different than any other role. They're going off a script. They're going off direction. And they're going off instinct. It's always good to look to the source for inspiration, just as it's good to look to the real person when doing a biopic, but under competent direction (by a director interested in remaining faithful to the source) it is not necessary for an actor to be particularly well-versed in comics. If the character's there, they will find it.

In fact, it might be for the best if actors stayed away from the comics, or at least didn't let themselves be wholly influenced by them. It's restricting.

Maybe is because Bruce Wayne doesn´t have a really familiar or particular look, since he is second to Batman, and under the cowl, and as long as the Batsuit looks good, any good actor would do for the job, and Bale actually showed some good moves and fighting skills in Equilibrium
