Oscar Candidate?

The fact that X3 is even considered for an oscar nomination disgusts me, but not as much as the fact that many of you think it diserves not only the nomination, but the win. If this movie wins any type of Ocar, it forever puts this movie above the first two as far as pop culture history is concerned. Future generations will instantly recognize X3 to be better than X2 without even ever seeing an X-Men film.

The Oscar Nomination is for visual effects not for best movie ever. You have to admit the effects were good, and better than the previous films.

I will admit that, yes. But were they oscar worthy? Were the better than Superman? Pirates? Casino Royale? People won't pay attention to what the oscar was for 10 years from now, but X3 will be the only one of the trillogy to feature "Academy Award Winner" on the dvd cover.

Its a sad world. Ben Affleck and Eminem had academy awards before Morgan Freeman did. Its this kind of world where X3 would get an oscar while films like BB begins and Spiderman 2 go unnoticed. To tell you the truth, x3's visuals were not that spectacular. They made Ian Mckellen young. Whoop.
Kelsey Grammer is blue now. Give them the award for make up. awesome.

That's like saying that the fx in SR weren't good just because they made Supes fly and lift heavy stuff.
Both movies had great fx (X3 were better IMO), and they don't need a great story behind to get the Oscar.
I really think X3 deserves at least the nomination. Fx were great all over the movie, and the de aging stuff is a breaktrough, and that's always a plus in this cases.

First time in the history of film....

WETA worked on X3 for heavens sake.

I don't know...if you ask me, compare Mystique's morphing in X2 to morphing in X3 and it wasn't spectacular at all...X2 blows X3 out of the water with that...in my opinion.

X3 was in the list of ten best movies of the year by this Brazilian site, as number 10:
http://g1.globo.com/Noticias/Cinema/0,,AA1388815-7086,00.html

Seriously...I never thought I'd see this in a serious list. Especially coming from that site, which is very reliable...and by a good critic.

Here is what she says:
"Besides proposing important discussions - like respect for the different - the movie which completes the trilogy of the coolest super-heroes from comics continues the story of Phoenix (Famke Janssen), the most powerful character from the team, who joins the dark side of the force."

This is her top:
10 - X3
09 - Cassino Royale
08 - Match Point
07 - Don't Come Knocking
06 - V for Vendetta
05 - The Departed
04 - El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
03 - Volver
02 - O Ano em que Meus pais saíram de férias (brazilian)
01 - Babel

Congrats to X3! The film did have some revolutionary effects, IMO. Getting considered in itself is a compliment, so whatever happens, happens! :)

Over in the Movies forum, a lot of people are saying X3 will prob get nominated. In the end, I'm sure POTC will take the award home though.

The effect in X3 were indeed better than both X1/X2. There's nothing in the previous movies that even come close to that bridge scene, not even close. Which is why X3 got the nod, and X2 didn't.

Wow...that´s great! :D:up: Well, X3 was such a hit here, I´m not surprised it received some kind of recognition.
It´s a pity neither The Prestige nor The Fountain were included in any of the site´s lists...they´re on the top of my top ten!
Man, all that "Babel" hype...gee, I haven´t seen the movie and I´m sick of it already! :cmad:

I think X3 deserves an Oscar. It would be great, and I believe an award would be a recognition for all the good work done on the trilogy, not only on the last film. That´s exactly what happened to LotR.
I´d like to see X3 nominated (and winning) for musical score, though.

The makeup in X3 was underwhelming. Beast looked like a muppet from the neck down. And from the neck up, it was as if his face was painted blue. Surely, there were better, more deserving makeup and FX jobs this year than X3.

Beast pretty much looked like Beast from the comics, I don't see how anyone can complain about that.

I agree. I wasn't too impressed with Beast's look either. It didn't sell the character to me.

oh yeah, Babel is getting a huge hype around here. I think Babel, Volver and the Departed are the movies I've seen most about (yet I haven't watched any of them).

And I do think the only category X3 should win, because it's actually flawless, is soundtrack. I wasn't impressed by make-up or special effects (there are movies with way better effects and make-up than X3 this year), but the score is truly awesome.

:whatever: If you're going to ***** and moan, make sure you actually do your damn research so you won't look like a fool doing it. Spidey 2? Won the Oscar for best visual effects. Ben Affleck won an award for writing and Eminem won it for a song. You're acting like they won it for actual acting, which is what Morgan won it for. Get some damn perspective and quit letting you friggin bias against the movie cloud your judgement, because you're only making yourself look like an idiot in the end. Seriously, grow up people, it's a friggin movie and it's a minor oscar. There's much bigger things in this franchise you could worry about than the possibility that a make up artist or special effects artist could win an award. Sheesh.

All criticism aside about script and acting aside the visual effects were undeniably fantastic in X3 and i do think it deserves a nomination in my opnion.Yeah its a shame X2 never got nominated for anything but what can you do?

The competition is tough with the likes of POTC2, Superman and and Poseidon. Those movies boast great effects as well it must be side.

What works in X3's favor are the groundbreaking deaging effects for Xavier and Magneto, the Xavier vs Phoenix at Jean Grey's house, Phoenix descruction at Alctraz, the Mystique cure scene, Pyro vs Iceman and last but not least the GG bridge sequence.

Mine too! "The Fountain" did get a Golden Globe nomination for Best Score, which it deserved, the score is amazing.

Sorry guys but POTC2 definently deserves the Golden Globe for FX.

I find it hilarious how people say X3 should get a nod as it had everything that X2 didn't. Well, how was Bryan supposed to have all of those nifty eye candy effects with such a low budget and time constaints by Fox?

Fox gave Ratner everything he needed to create mindless action special effects and eye candy.

In the end POTC 2 or Superman Returns will possibly get the Academy Award(If nominated) over X3. In my opinion Davey Jones and the Kraken were very visually impressive and creepy to look at.

King Kong won it last year correct?

Neither of them will win. The Golden Globes doesn't have a Visual Effects category. :oldrazz:

Actually, I think de-aging effects will be what probably get X3 a nomination. When you look at the movies in competition, they're all action movies.

I think POTC will definitely win. The effects where terrific in that. I just watched Superman again this week, and a lot the flying effecs looked so computerized during the plane sequence. It didn't look bad, but it was just obvious CG.

Yes. It also won for Sound and Sound Editing. And was robbed in the Art Direction category. :cmad:

I will say that I think it's safe to say Spider-Man 3, POTC 3, Transformers, and Ghost Rider(maybe) will get the nominations at the Academy Awards for best visual/special effects.

Next year, maybe, but we're talking about this year.
