Oscar Candidate?

The de-aging is not new at all and not groundbreaking...they have been using deaging effects in poster and all sorts of magazines and ads.....not in sense X3 did....but company do brush up on photos in magazines and ads

whats ground breaking is the Golden gate bridge..Eragon had Dragons in the movie..made using only CGI and Poseiden had a ship Purely mad of CGI and water etc

Yeah, I know that.
But I´ve never seen it in a movie.

X3 has some really good special effects, and the de-aging is really original and groundbreaking. I don´t see anything similar to that in Eragon or Poseidon. Or in any other film, frankly.

I believe the FX in Superman Returns and POTC 2 absolutely murder anything that is from X3.

There's a big difference between doing brush ups on a single picture and doing the kind of effects they did in a movie with moving, acting people.

I can't stand Harry Potter, which is why I forgot to mention it on purpose.

That's OK, I can't stand the Transformers. :oldrazz:

I wouldn't rule out Harry Potter...if the sequences at the Department of Mysteries are anything close to what happens in the book, that's going to be a wild FX sequence. Plus it has the Thestrals, and a centaur teacher, Sirius Black's vanishing house, and Voldemort with his Death Eaters vs. the kids.

Not sure how much of that is going to make it into the movie, but if it does...it will more than likely be up for something.

Like I said, not a big Harry Potter fan. Only Harry Potter movie I saw was Chamber of Secrets and I hated it with a passion. The reason I believe Transformers will get nominated is simply because the complexity of the FX that involved robots changing back and forth.

But only time will tell I guess. I think next years nominations will be Spider-Man 3, POTC 3, Transformers, and maybe Ghost Rider.

Did Batman Begins win any Academy Awards? I could've sworn it was nominated for Best Score and Best Costumes.

The books are MUCH better than the movies.

I've read all of the Harry Potter books, and I'm reading the UK versions of them now (it's fun to spot the little differences). The movies have gotten better--my favorite is "Prisoner of Azkaban," even though they left out a ton of story from the book.

I saw the "Order of the Phoenix" trailer in front of "Happy Feet" a few weeks ago, and the FX look fantastic so far. I wouldn't rule it out.

I couldn't stand the Transformers cartoon as a kid, I thought the teaser trailer they showed in front of POTC2 was awful. I know a lot of people are looking forward to it, but it's not my thing.

It received 1 nomination, for Best Cinematography. And it lost. :csad:

I watched Poseidon, and, though it should be in anyone's list of worst movies of the year, I can't help but to think it has awesome effects. (though in mostly only one sequence). It doesn't compare to Titanic at all (basically because they're different types of accidents), or any other movie I've seen with ship disasters...

I haven't watched Eragon, but by the glimpse I caught on TV, it seems to have also wonderful effects. The reason I chose these movies is because, as I said, they keep some coherence in the effects. All of them are somehow related into the movie. X-men and James Bond's movies have thousands of effects, but which mostly don't link themselves. We have lightning, a red beam, a flying bridge, some "youngenized" people (imo, although new and groundbreaking, it's subtle to the point of no one I ever watched the movie with noticed they looked younger. You only notice it when you see the real stills, so I didn't see anything jaw dropping there), a zombie, people becoming ashes (which shall I add, I don't like the "demolecularizing" effect at all. Seems just fake and cg'd), a multiplying guy, a Flash-like effect, and lots of "hidden" sequences (like Phoenix rising, if it was there in all it's glory, I bet it would count way more points to an Oscar than a cheap silhouette) ...they all don't really connect to each other.

But I would be happy if X3 got a nomination. When you come to think of it, it has the most unique and well-made effects of the trilogy, even though the effects, this time, aren't as elegant as they were in X2, or even if the flight scenes still look terrible. Got to remember we had a tornado bonanza, a teleporting guy (in one sequence that was considered one of the best action scenes of the year), a dam breaking (at that point, water effects usually didn't look as real as they do in X2, besides the LOTR trilogy) and X2 wasn't nominated...and it didn't even have the terrible flying scenes to count against (the only flight scene was absoluetly perfect, by Eric in Cerebro).

Oh mY god damn! I know, nothing to do with the topic, but I must express my anger: Brett Ratner is going to direct a documenary titled "Brazil Carnival 2007". Here comes another f**king stereotyped vision about us :cmad: Really, Out of all people, BRETT RATNER is making the documentary? A damn playboy who only thinks about excuse ways to get sex from pretty girls? Jesus...I'm officially mad.

X2 is still my favorite from the trilogy, and I was really annoyed it wasn´t nominated for any prizes. No, not annoyed, I was mad! I think the trilogy deserves some kind of recognition, specially because of X2. I would be really glad, and somehow vindicated, to see X3 winning over the über-boring PotC franchise! :o

Hahaha...oh sorry Flavio, but this is kind of funny! :woot: I read something about Brett and some stars coming to Bahia to film the carnival thingie...he can´t do too much damage, I guess he´s just going to pretend he´s Orson Welles (who filmed the carnival in Rio when he was still a young and daring director), drink a lot and fool around with some Brazilian girlfriends! :woot:
Think about it, Flavio - it can´t be worse than "Turistas"! :cwink: :oldrazz:

I just read last week that Brett Ratner's grandmother is getting a reality show. If that's true, I think it really is a sign of the end of civilization.

Something I don't understand about "Turistas" (besides why anyone would actually pay money to see it)...if the story is about them luring tourists just to steal their organs, why would the tagline be "Go Home"?? Wouldn't the organ-stealing people go out of business if the tourists went home?

POTC 2, SR (Guaranteed) and CR or X3 will be nominated for best VFX.

Next year i gave a feeling SM3, POTC3, FF2 (WETA), TF, HP5, 2 winter flicks will be the 7 nominations.

Guess it makes Brazilians not only merciless tourist-killers, but also a bunch of incredibly dumb people! :woot: :oldrazz:

wat pic is that??

It's the T-800 model from the film Terminator 2. The picture was response to when Danoyse said "Brett Ratner's grandmother getting a reality show is a sign of the end of civilization."

The picture is basically a T-800 cyborg in a very apocalyptic future.

You beat me to it Retro. There are some pretty good contenders up there.

Indeed, its not easy to predict this one. I think the nominees will probably be Pan's Labyrinth, Pirates of the Caribbean and Apocalypto.

If X3 gets any Oscar nominations (or win) Fox will probably change the cover art of future prints of the dvd and slap on the Oscar logo.

Which it may conceivably have a chance at winning, since Pirates of the Caribbean and Pan's Labyrinth have mostly visual effects.

Yeah, they'll put on "Oscar Nominee" rather than "Oscar Nominee FOR BEST MAKE-UP" :whatever:

Yeah, yeah, an oscar's an oscar, but for that big of a SFX-driven flick, you'd want the bigger "technical" nominations.
