Apocalypse Oscar Isaac IS Apocalypse - Part 2

I don't really get the criticisms, he hit all of the right notes for me, he was powerful when he needed to be, could manipulate others and make them more powerful, had a personality and was really tough to take down. I really enjoyed him in the movie.

I just didn't like the story. Like I wanted a big back story, I wanted to know why he's so hungry for power and he didn't really interact with his horsemen other than Magneto and when he was talking to Magneto, they were more focused on Magneto's movitations than his.

We got a back story, it wasn't all spelled out, but it was there. He has been worshipped as a god in his past lives, so believes he is one, and can shape the world into what he wants from it. There was no reasoning with him, that's why Magneto got more focus at times. Apocalypse is called so for a reason.

so did they ditch the whole "survival of the fittest" aspect of his motivation...?
it seems from reviews they could've tied in his desire to drive forward evolution with the recurring themes of the x-films, but just said "f*** it, he's a god who wants to rule the world"

No it was there, it just wasn't as prominent as in other iterations of the character. He was going to destroy the world, but wanted to build a better one out of it, one where only the strongest would prosper. Of course, he considered himself the strongest also.

But remember the speech from the trailer "Everything they've built, will FALL! And from the ashes of their world, we'll build a better one.

Single biggest disappointment for me. From characterisation to costume to performance, it all hit a bum note.

That's not to knock Issac's talents. He had moments, and clearly threw himself into the role, but the writing wasn't there and he was totally buried in make-up. I was a firm supporter of prosthetics over CG, as I will nearly always invest more in a physical, photographed performance. I'll take the L on this. It didn't work here. He looked silly more often than not.

The character's history is underwhelming. An extended flashback sequence reveals only the minutia of his story: details explaining his existence and macguffin to revisit in the finale. It's all painfully dry. While it shows how the people around once treated him, we see precisely nothing of who this guy is. He literally does nothing. They say actions speak louder than words, but in this case he has neither.

Apocalypse in the "present" is just not that compelling. His motivation is plain and he isn't memorable enough to overcome it. He speaks with sinister majesty but it mostly comes down to a few grand speeches to some very suggestable marks. A shame because his powers of persuasion were talked about at length in the build up. He is not physically imposing and lacks those moments of violence that sell him as a dangerous villain. Apocalypse is largely hands-off, and that doesn't communicate well. His power-set is murky and mostly lame.

How god-damn lame did Apocalypse look taking a beating from Quicksilver? It was the first time we were seeing the major villain take his gloves off and get involved, and he's reduced to a rag doll by a secondary character. He was a laughing stock, and the slow-mo effect forced you to observe the underwhelming costume from all angles and in vivid detail.

His psychic battle with Xavier was a highlight, I would have liked more of it. I thought the effects were ropey and it hurt the scene, sadly.

He's pretty much a stock Marvel villain. It's more noticable in this series however because they have a much higher standard in this department.

meh. It was there but in the end he was reduced to a muhahahaha I'm gonna destroy the world villain. He was such a let down. There was no development or progression for the character. Dissapointing to say the least. Whedon did Apocalypses motives better with Ultron.

Agreed with everything.
And I was laughing hard when Quicksilver turned him into a punching bag
.:lmao: It was awful, just ****ing awful.:whatever:

I think the QS scene was meant to make Apoc look a little bit ridiculous (not the costume obviously but the character in that moment). I think it was meant to lull us into a false sense of security that Apoc would be easily defeated by QS as the latter made everything look easy.

But Apoc soon showed who is boss and quite brutally put QS in his place. Apoc was then able to battle pretty much the whole team single handedly which I loved. And if it wasn't for Jean, he would have won, even over power houses like Magneto (with a power boost) and Charles, even with an astral battle happening at the same time.

I thought that was awesome personally.

Now that I think about it He's just a little more than a mutant stylist. A waste of Isaac's talents.

Most underrated performance in a long time. He was the best of the main villains we got this year for me personally.

he was very much in line with apocalypse of comics.

as villain of year Issac doesn't have much competion for that.

Eisenberg was terrable in BVS.I hated his lex.The villains In Deadpool and
Civil war were basicly non-entries.Zemo in civil war makes apocalypse look straight out of comics.

Issac worked well for me as apocalypse.

Totally agree, he is my favourite villain of the year so far in CBMs.

Agreed, I didn't dislike Zemo or Francis, and yeah wasn't a fan if Lex or Doomsday much. But Apocalypse I was looking forward to a lot and I loved him in the movie.

zemo and francis were pretty much non-entrys in deadpool and Civil war.
Francis was just there to have deadpool have someone to get revenge on.civil war was more about conflict between cap and stark.zemo was kind of non-entry.

in BVS Lex was terrable.Fancis and zemo was kin dof there but i understand people liking them as villains.Lex was just terrable.

Isaac was great as apocalypse.he gave me what i wanted from apocalypse.
Apocalypse isn't exactly a deep villain.he has survival of the fitest mentaly and wants to destroy the world to creat new world for strongest with him being worshiped as god.

Spot on, I thought he as great and Isaac totally sold me on him. I also loved that it took the whole team and more to take him down as well. And he was the most powerful mutant, apart from one, as he found out himself.

I find it slightly odd that people are critical of Apocalypse's portrayal/characterisation. I agree with AVEITWITHJAMON and marvelrobbins - I think he was a great villain and Isaac did a fantastic job bringing depth and charisma to his performance, he was menacing and perfectly embodied that godly trait of his character. Granted he may be slightly cliched in that he wants to destroy the world but he was the same in the comics and cartoons. Also Shaw in First Class was very similar in his motivations and he didn't get/need too much development/backstory.

Plus, we got one or two great lines ala TAS. I really need to watch it a few times to get one of them down.

First, I just want to say that the makeup looked fine. I personally am glad they went with this over motion capture, though I know diehards will disagree.

I thought Isaac brought the heat, but Kinberg's script let him down. Isaac commanded attention and oozed vain presence, but he only ever got one scene to show off. And it is a good scene where he [blackout]jettisons all of the world's nukes into space.[/blackout] The use of Beethoven and Isaac's measured cadence during this scene is awesome.

However, the rest of the movie just kind of has him standing around talking in the abstract or raising a hand and then CGI happens around him. Isaac was a great choice, but the lack of imagination from those around him let him down a little bit.

I feel like if they were going to go as cartoon-y as they did, they should've given Oscar better lines. I think they got waaay too carried away with the cult-y aspects of the character (something that wasn't even delivered upon) and should've maybe tried to go a bit more over the top with his lines to sell the vanity of the character.

So about Apocalypse in the end...

Am I the only one that thought maybe Apocalypse survived by somehow taking over Psylocke's body? It's the look she gives before she slips away.

My first viewing I didn't think that but in my second viewing I did lol.

How is that possible if he needed the elaborate pyramid setup to transfer into others? Unless it's not a transference as much as it is some kinda lowkey mindcontrol thing.

I would just LOL! if that is the case! X-Men: The Queen Psylocke Saga is here!

I didn't think so at the time but you have made me think now. [BLACKOUT]I hope there is a way they can bring him back though.[/BLACKOUT]
