Our "Space Princess": David Corenswet IS Clark Kent/Superman!

The weird thing is that when Routh was first announced, I found that resemblance so striking, but as time has gone on and I’ve gotten used to Routh’s face, I don’t really see it so much anymore.

I never quite got the resemblance myself. Both tall and dark haired and handsome and all that, but facially I didn't see a whole lot of symmetry between them. If anything I thought someone like Michael Trucco had more of a Reeve vibe, quite similar mouth and lips.

On the subject of Reeve, came across this photo earlier - and man, that neck. I don't know if he always had a strong neck or if it was a result of his workout regime for the first Superman movie, but I think that, combined with his height and broad build, made him look very powerful and imposing.

No skinny necks please Mr Gunn.

Reeve never had a skinny neck, but I don't think it was quite at his Superman level before he hit the gym:

Reeve was perfect casting for clark/superman, much like Depp was for Cap'n jack sparrow and Robert Downey Jr was for Iron Man.
I can't think of those three characters and not picture these actors in the roles.
These kinds of absolute perfect castings don't happen often.

Cavill and Routh both certainly had the look for Superman, but as we all know, it takes much much more than looks to beome the character.
You gotta have the acting chops to sell it..

Some actors can just slip into a role and become the character they're playing ( reeve as superman for example ).

Some actors appear to just be going through the motion, and never quite make us believe they are the character they're playing.

I don't expect an earth shattering casting announcement for superman or anything.
What I do expect is for Gunn to cast someone who can act, who can make me believe this guy IS Superman, and of course he needs to look like Superman. Tall, built, warm smile, genuine, etc etc.

Get that right and everything will be fine.

A part of me is hoping that Gunn (as kinda usual) sped up the process and we could get the actor confirmation any minute now but who knows how likely that is lol 2 weeks left to go. I'm just hoping someone leaks those two other finalist names already to get a sense of what we're dealing with. Tom Brittney and Andrew Richardson are underwhelming and I can't say I'm a fan of the prospect of either getting the part so I really want to know who are the alternatives.
As anxious as I am to find out who it is going to be, I'd rather they take all the time they need to get the perfect guy rather than rush and miss out on someone who could have been better.

But yeah, i'd love to know who those other 2 are if it really was down to 3 already.

Even if he does look a bit like Cavill (and personally, I don't see that much of a resemblance), what's the issue? People used to say that Routh looks like Reeve or that Cavill looks like Welling. Any actress with brown hair gets compared to Kidder. lol It's all just par for the course.
Nobody is saying there is an issue. Like I said in a previous post Cavill looks like Superman straight out of the comics. Many posters see the resemblance like I do and many posters agree with you. Some of you guys seem a little sensitive regarding Corenswet and Cavill. That is my point of the comparison.

This is a random guess but I could see Connnor Swindell being one of the other two candidates. Fits what Gunn seems to be looking for, and like Corenswet, his career seems to have enough momentum at the moment to get noticed.

I never thought Routh looked like Reeve at all. Sounded like him, though.
Man, Routh could've been so good with better direction. I do like him in Returns, I'm a pretty big defender of Returns, but he's getting hit with the same kind of bad direction I feel like Cavill got hit with.

See, I DO believe that about Routh. Cavill, not so much. I think Cavill could’ve been a better Superman under better direction, but still not actually a good one. Routh had the potential though, and I think he proved that in Crisis. I hated that event, but was glad he got that opportunity.

Routh may not be a great actor, but there is an inherent decency, honesty and manners to him that came through, even with the bad writing and direction of Returns. Neither Welling or Cavill seem to possess those qualities, and they didn't show up on screen

Oh, I don't think Cavill had a great Superman in him either but I think the particular way he was bad was largely thanks to Snyder's direction - I think he'd have been a blandly competent, basically likable Superman and a very weak Clark Kent with better direction, as exhibited in the theatrical cut of JL.

After watching all the Superman movies over the last week, I've realized that Christopher Reeve is the only good Superman we've had on the big screen. Routh had big shoes to fill but he wasn't given much of anything to do and his Clark was pretty much nonexistent.

Neither Returns or Man of Steel had any life to them. Despite the, let's say, shortcomings, of Superman III and Quest for Peace, they at least had an earnestness to them

Snyder tried to avoid Clark Kent and The Daily Planet like the plague.

I thought THR article stated the screen tests would be "around" the holiday, either this week or next, but I could have misread that. I was kind of hoping for an early holiday "Surprise", but that was wishful thinking.

So the earliest I would assume the screen-tests are would be Wednesday or Thursday, since I would think Tuesday after the holiday would be too soon. So maybe something slips next Friday, or the middle of the following week(PLEASE). The waiting is kind of torture.

I'm thinking around from May 29th-June 9th they'll cast their guy, so we're pretty close.

David Corenswet, who recently played the ill-fated projectionist opposite Mia Goth in Pearl, is among the top contenders to play Kent, aka Superman, advancing to the screen test stage that will likely take place after Memorial Day or in early June, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Two other contenders may also be in the mix, but their identities remain unknown.

For me, snyder tapped danced around the essence of superman.
He didn't want to embrace what makes superman, well, superman.

We didn't get to see the nerd in Clark,
the boyscout nature of superman,
the fish out of water of Clark being in metropolis.

He instead ( my opinion ) chose to make superman batman lite, Dark and brooding.

But, In Snyder’s defense, he did appear to try and fix things in his cut of JL, but, it was too late by that point. The damage was done.

In this new film, I don't want to wait and see Clark grow into being superman over the course of several films.
I want to see the superman we all know and love right out of the gate.
We deserve that.
Give us the boyscout. Give us his small-town attitude. Embrace it, don't run from it.

Snyder's problem was that he's only interested in what he sees as "cool." He wanted Superman to be cool and badass. The goofy farm dork doesn't fit that image, so he left the aspect that most feeds into that ~dreadfully uncool~ image out of his universe as much as possible. What he missed, is that Clark's unabashed "uncool"-ness is exactly what makes the character cool, imo. That this guy with the power of a god is actually a big goof, prone to dad humor, and amused by the smallest things, is the heart of the character's charm. You remove that aspect, you remove the essence of his personality, and you render the character painfully generic and boring.

Clark needs to find humor in the smallest of things.
Like how we keep our noses in our smart phones, or how we rush to get to appointments that really don't matter in the great scheme of things.

Thanks for posting all of those pictures of Christopher Reeve, you guys!

Although he wasn't my introduction to Superman, I can see why they chose him. That was some spot-on casting! Visually, he looked like Superman, he had the right build AND he was a Julliard trained actor.

I really hope that James Gunn DOES keep in mind that looking the part is one thing, but you also gotta sell it. Make people believe. That's why Christopher Reeve is STILL the standard to this day.

I was rewatching Reeve's screentest and he was SO good. Even when he wasn't in shape, just on acting alone, his screen presence was magnetic.

Could not agree more. Although Superman has one of the best origin stories, I'm ready to see a superman in a modern movie already being on the job as Clark and superman. I think part of the appeal for the character for me is his supporting cast at the daily planet.

I think that's what was lacking for me in Snyder's take, even though it touched on Clark as a reporter, the meat of that story was only in the ultimate cut.

I want to see Clark do some serious reporting and discover what Lex is really up to.
I want to see he and Lois be competitive.

And I want to see Clark dart into a empty DP room in response to an emergency, and do a classic shirt rip with the theme slowly starting to play in the background.

We've been so robbed of it, that I want to see it in slo mo, with each button on his shirt popping off and flying off in all directions, with the theme getting Louder.

His shirt slowly opens and we see the classic \S/ in all it's glory, with no quick cut a way of the camera either, and the theme would really be Blairing at this point.
He opens a window and leaps out into the air.
A sonic boom is then heard.
We need a moment to Embrace it, to soak it all in.

This is random, but in looking back at some of my favorite illustrations of Superman, I've found that Corenswet bares a certain resemblance to Garcia-Lopez's classic take on the character. Just give him the right hairstyle and a little extra muscle mass, and voila! It's a done deal.
