Paul Dano is Edward Nashton aka "The Riddler"

I actually think it’s possible that tapeyman as some ppl call him (aw you’re so adorable) could be Firefly, working for Riddler. I personally think it’s Dano. But possible? Sure why not.

With the Riddler, there is an inherent silliness to the character. He likes riddles. That's his gimmick. My problem over the years is design wise how they try to make him more serious but still retain the sillier aspects like the mask and it always looks awful.

I was afraid of the darker aspect they were taking, not knowing how it was gonna be. But now that I see it, I absolutely love it. Reeves just took it to another place. I think if you're going to make Riddler a more serious threat, just go all the way and don't half measure it like in other versions. The Zodiac killer vibes is really the ideal way to go here. I cringed at the Jigsaw ideas, but Zodiac is the perfect way to do it. The U.S. surplus cold weather mask is a really inspired design for him. It's creepy, but I love how it still uses a more grounded approach where this could conceivably be what a real serial killer would look like. For the fact he looks nothing like comic book Riddler, the fact they were able to make it really creative but still feel true to him is a real commendable thing here.

All Hannibal Lecter does is speak in riddles. No one found him silly.

Also, death traps are literally The Riddler’s M.O. In his first comic appearance, the first death trap he uses is a suffocation trap where he duct tapes a guy’s face. Sure, most traps in Saw are a bit extreme for him, though there are some that I could see Riddler using like the Water Cube trap and the Merry-Go-Round.

When i first saw this rumor a day ago I thought it could totally be Firefly for a second. I'm pretty sure it's Riddler though. Lol

Apples and oranges. Hannibal Lecter is a man who eats people first and foremost. He is cryptic when he wants to be. Riddler's whole MO is based on riddles, hence the name. Both are threatening in their own way. However that doesn't mean Riddler isn't silly. And that's okay.

Outside of Red Dragon Hannibal is also essentially far more of a supervillain than any sort of realistic serial killer, part of what was so brilliant about Fuller's show was almost entirely divorcing Harris's work from any sort of realism into something overtly surreal. On the opposite end of the spectrum, as a side-note, what I love so much about Brian Cox's "Lecktor" from Manhunter is how he feels exactly how a guy like Hannibal would be in real life - just sort of smarmy and unpleasant.

Being technically "Silly" isn't inherently a bad thing, taking a basically silly thing very seriously is part of the fun of the genre, far as I'm concerned. I enjoy that a hell of a lot more than winking irony.

I mean, Hannibal talks like Katherine Hepburn for goodness sake
In a lesser movie than Silence Hopkin's Hannibal I actually do think would be too silly to be all that menacing. As evidenced by the other two far, far lesser movies where he just comes off... Weird. Although, some of his interactions with Norton in Red Dragon are pretty good even though Hopkins looks 8000 years old and Ratner's ultra-boring style doesn't lend him the same unsettling gravitas that Demme's intimate close-ups did.

The anomalous nature of Lecter coming off like a Bond villain feels a lot more striking in Silence because it's otherwise so grounded. That is a very difficult balance.

Jack The Ripper and Zodiac also left actual riddles as in letters to police in real life but I doubt anyone would call them stupid face to face. In fact If I was a serial killer, I believe it would be quite entertaining to become a legend that way. There is quite the thrill in causing mass hysteria empowering you, then also humiliating their defences by further panicking them.

Like any other alpha predators marking their hunting ground, its only natural instinct to them.

Out of all the members of the cast this one is the one who convinced me from the start, he kinda looks like the character.
What i like about the Riddler is that he gives them the choice to tell a different story, he is not a psychical threat, Batman has to use his brain to defeat him and i think that is refreshing.
I think the movie will be a race to stop more deaths while uncovering corruption about Gotham (and maybe about Bruce parents too), which is also refreshing because always the same "save the city/world" story in superhero movies can get tired.
I also hope he uses a suit closer to the comic book at some point.

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense for a character who is all about riddles and puzzles to hide his face, his identity.

I kind of like the idea that he's akin to a serial killer who is "finding himself". Finding out who he is, by detailing the killings of someone else. Sort of a reverse Red Dragon scenario.

Someone pointed out that it looks like he’s wearing a forensics outfit under the jacket and mask. Perhaps Riddler is a current or former CSI? In that case, it really would be smart to hide his face. It would be interesting if they took inspiration from Dexter for his origins.

Maybe, maybe not.

On the subject of Paul Dano, does anyone have any recommendations of good movies that he's been in, or where he's given a good performance?

I've seen 12 Years a Slave, and Cowboys & Aliens, but haven't seen There Will Be Blood in its entirety, nor have I seen Prisoners, among others. Still, 12 Years alone sold me on him being a good pick by Matt Reeves. But does anyone recommend other films to get a good sense of Dano as an actor?

I hope Riddler traps Batman into one of those Bane scenarios early on. To see him against several well trained much larger opponents who nearly take him until he’s able to get away barely. This movie as part of the shock to his early psyche should be one of major defeat only to win in the third movie. To hear how Pattinson is playing the role mixed in with this sort of extremely tough if not tougher opponents would be amazing. I don’t want him to be a Bat god again

Swiss Army Man is wild as all hell. Radcliffe is the main attraction though.

He's in Looper, but it's a pretty small role early in the movie.

Also was the lead in a quirky rom com with Zooey Deschanel called Gigantic.

Definitely Prisoners and There Will Be Blood. I'd even put Swiss Army Man, Little Miss Sunshine and the tv mini series Escape at Dannemora in there if you want to see him play a wide variety of different roles. The man has alot of range and is a great talent IMO who deserves to be a much bigger star than he is right now.

I almost suggested a bunch of Cillian Murphy movies just to be a smart ass.
