Percy Jackson and The Olympians : The Lightning Thief

i heard that Brandon T. Jackson's character was an stereotypical black sidekick. If that's the case, aren't we over that?

yeah there were times i was rolling my eyes at how cheesy the typical black guy was...

but he had one good scene that made me laugh when they tried bribing the gatekeeper of the underworld

Grover's save at the museum was my favorite part for him.

My main thought about Brandon was that I hope he and Will Smith never do a movie together. I would have to shoot myself.

Saw it tonight, but I didn't know about the extra scene after the credits - bummer.

I really liked the books. They weren't the most well-written novels of all time, but they were fun and enjoyable. And about 50% of this film is also fun and enjoyable. The start of the film seems to be all over the place and they go from A to E without bothering about B, C or D. The narrative really jumps around all over the place and even with my knowledge of the book and Greek mythology in general, some of the leaps really didn't make a whole lot of sense. I feel quite bad for the general movie-going public who don't have that background knowledge.

There were a lot of radical character changes or omissions and one of them really stinks, that being the character of Luke. The acting was pretty terrible, especially Logan Lerrman (sp?) who played Percy Jackson. In the first part of the film, his character is meant to be suffering a major loss, but nobody appeared to have told the actor that fact since the character completely forgets about it and happily wanders off exploring his new surroundings and checking out the hot chicks.

The only semi-consistent character was Grover and he just played the wise-cracking side-kick. Even the other member of the terrific trio started off well enough, but seemed to get dumber and less skilled as the movie went on. I guess she needed to take a back-seat to the "hero", but it was a bit of a disservice to the character.

At the end of the day, I'd like to see another film simply because I'm a huge fan of Greek mythology, but I was really disappointed by all the changes from the book and some weird character choices. As others have noted, Hades appearing as a stereotypical "devil" creature seemed pretty dull. As was their depiction of Tartarus (or the Underworld, whatever part it was meant to be).

Cheers.

There's no way this movie cost 145 million. This movie looked way too standard. 100 million max, imo. If Fox only gave Fantastic Four 75 million and Daredevil 80, I doubt they'd almost double that for an unproven franchise.

Below is an article I found about the budget for this film. This film will be a major flop if the gross box office prediction by comingsoon.net comes true.

I doubt that Comingsoon.net's prediction will come true. Nikki Finke says that early box-office numbers for "Percy" are $50M during the 4-day holiday weekend. I think it's safe to say that the movie will recoup its budget and 'encourage' Fox to make a sequel..

Saw this movie last night. Overall I'd say it was a lot of fun cheesy in some parts but a lot of fun. The Audience in my theater liked it it will be interesting to see if this gets a sequel.

i wouldnt be too surprised it cost that much... it had just as many vfx shots as Narnia... not to mention they were better. And all the locations they shot at...

this movie needs about 300mil to then start making a profit...
lol... unlikely but who knows, overseas it should make alot more

I saw the movie yesterday, right before I saw The Wolfman, I liked it, fun but cheesy lol 8.5/10:awesome::up:

How is a 145 million a really big budget. I mean its nothing compared to a lot of films of today. A lot of comic book films being made now cost a lot more and thanks to Avatar we will see bigger big budgets. I think The Last Airbender is around this price i believe.

145 is a very big budget for a movie like this with a director like this.

not everyone is making movies čole spiderman ,star trek with directors like Spielberg,JAckson and Cameron

Considering he made the first 2 Potter films its not too hard for studios to be reluctant when seem work with that younger audience target at the time.
Also prices on things are increasing in case didn't know for likely compensating for ticket prices and newer more pricey effects.
I blame Fox for the flop for no films does really great in Feb really. I think out of new this year releases Eli has made the most money.

It's a lot of money for this time of year. Most movies barely break 100 million. I think Taken and Paul Blart are the only ones to do so last year.

Book of Eli is barely over 80million.

Alice in Wonderland and Clash are the breakouts for this year.

without a doubt the WORST adaptation I have ever seen.

seriously there comes a stage where you are changing the movie so much from the source material that it no longer should bear the name of the source material.

It's a really large budget for an untested property released this time of year.

Just to let you guys know, some changes like Thalia's story and the Prophercy were removed so if there was no sequel there wont be any loose ends. Chris said that they be in added in the sequel beacuse they did not have a huge part to play in this.

I was amazed for i read somewhere that Clash Of Titans had like a budget of 70 million and it looks like spent more money then that. But i don't think Leterrier is a big time spender.

Just saw it and it was enjoyable for the most part. Didnt really get how Percy just became prime suspect in stealing Zeus' bolt in the beginning, and Half-Blood camp was kind of a waste. Sure demi-gods are sent there to help develop whatever powers they were born with but why did majority all be trained to be skillful warriors. Sure maybe if there were suppose to be some future war coming up it would make sense. And it also annoyed me how Percy gets beaten by Annabeth inititally in their first fight but then he puts his hand in the water and he becomes a total master at fighting.

Much mroe enjoyable than Twilight but couldve been made better.

I saw it today, it wasn't the best, but it was enjoyable... the action was good for the most part, the only thing I would say is that the starting needed work, I liked the fast pace of it, bcuz it was 2 hrs and if they slowed it down it would've felt 2 hrs, but what really irked me initially was the guy who played Percy
after he thought he lost his mother, I didn't sense any real anger, or when he woke up in the infirmary and realized what happened wasn't a dream, I was like dude your mom's dead, get mad, lol
I wouldn't have been so critical if the actor were actually 12, or anywhere close

Another thing that was interesting was that Annabeth is the daughter of the goddess of Wisdom, yet she barely displays Athena's brilliant strategical skills in the heat of danger, I thought she'd be coming up with amazing plans, or battle strategies to defeat each monster, or figuring out the Lotus problem when they were in danger, though she did splurt out bits of Greek trivia every so often... but I figure maybe it was done to keep the focus on Percy and show that Poseidon was determined to clear his son's name, so he helped him more, or maybe that's simply how it is in the books

I could nitpick on, but generally other than that every thing was pretty good

Grover holding head of Medusa, maid double takes and screams lol

Persephone motions for Grover to come here,
Grover: "ba-ah-ah"

lol that killed me, the audience responded well at the theatre I was at today, especially to Grover

I agree 100%. They should have to change the name of this film because it has nothing in common with The Lightning Thief book. One of the worst, if not the worst adaptations I've ever seen. Fox completely destroyed a really good story and a really good book. 1/10. Epic fail.:down

Watching this movie was a lot like watching Eragon.

It's like I said. Other than LOTR and Harry Potter all of these fantasy movies are just run of the mill dime a dozen dreck.

If this Logan Lerman kid is going to play Spider-man, we are in big trouble. He's got a decent physique I suppose but that's it. His eyes are blank, he's bland as hell.

I didn't like any of the characters in this movie. They were all incredibly cookie cutter. Columbus seems to be losing his touch as a director because everything about this movie felt pedestrian and obligatory.

Seriously, the kid seems to know some things about Greek mythology, how could he not know about Hydra?

Also, here is what I don't get. Why does Zeus think Percy took it? Just because it's Poseidon's son? Why does he not suspect Hades or someone else? Also, it feels like Percy never just says he doesn't have it. Why wouldn't he just say that to Hades when he pops up?

The lamest thing about the movie to me is that they spend the whole movie LOOKING FOR PEARLS! Percy never even thinks of trying to find the bolt or the lightning thief or even trying to ask who would take it or who could take it. Now I haven't read the books, so some of this stupidity could be Riordan's fault.

That annoyed me the most. They've been looking almost the entire Movie for shiny marbles, instead of doing something more productive, like finding out who took the Lightning in the first place. Also, like you said, no one ever explained why everyone suspected Percy. The Lightning was gone and without a second thought Percy was blamed.
