I just watched Spider-Man 3 and in the montage of scenes where Peter is a badass - specifically the scene where he is eating cookies with Cake Girl - Peter answers a phone call from Dr Conners and greets him with a "Shalom"
Has anyone noticed this before?
I have heard many theories as to what religion Peter might be, but as far as I know it always turned out to be inconclusive.

I would worry about where this thread will go.

But it has got me wondering how the films would have turned out if Mel Gibson was director :)

I always assumed he was christian probably protestant. Parker is an English surname.
If he had been made jewish in the movies would he have gone to a Christian church over his guilt for hitting Mary Jane? Forgiveness is the theme of #3.

I don't think he said Shalom there. Even if he did, I don't think that was exactly a moment where Peter was thinking religiously. It sounded to me like he was just putting a twist on "hello". Like where folks lookig to sound cool will answer a phone "Yello" or "Chello".

Anyway in Spidey 1, May is performing the Lord's Prayer; In 2 she thanks the statue of Mary for saving her; and in 3 Peter goes to a Catholic church to free himself of the symbiote.

When I first listened to him talking to Connors on the phone I thought I heard "chello".

I think its best to avoid religious classification of fictional characters
(if its not a necessary part of their background, which I think is the case here)

but, if it makes you feel better, or helps to connect to the character to think of him as being the same religion as you, that’s fine

personally, I'd say that, though, Aunt May, does seem to be a rather religious person, who I am sure raised Peter religiously...
that Peter is a scientist at heart, and like most scientist he's probably skeptical about religion, and despite his up raising he is probably no long a practicing member of the church in his adult life (not to say he's a full atheists, just not really sure what he actually believes, or choices to express his faith in his own way) an I am sure May respects his choice, and wouldn't force her believes on to him

I certainly wouldn't make judgment about someone’s religious believes, base on one "Shalom" (if that's even what he said)

who knows, maybe, Connors is Jewish, and that's why he greeted him with a "Shalom"

Meh, I always thought Tobey's Peter was Italian.

Andrew's on the other hand might be Jewish.

Peter Parker is a New Yorker, Yiddish is part of his native tongue.

He could be.

Has Peter Parker ever had an obvious religion in the comics?

Is it incredibly wrong that I read 'Peter Parker Jewish' on the first page of the Spidey boards area and immediately started to laugh?

A...a badass you say?

Did Spider-Man 3 have an extra montage that I never saw?

As many times as I saw it, never heard him say the Hebrew greet. Going to check it later then return to you

This. I can't believe you all didn't hear him say,"Chello?" Clear as day for me...unless you guys all picked up the Spider-man 3 jewish additon dvd?

If you went through Ellis Island as "Parkowitz" you would come out the other end "Parker".

Meh, only if they had a hard time spelling or saying it. Plenty of people I know whose last names end in "witz"

I think this confirms he isn't Jewish in the films. But hey, anything is possible I guess.

Wow, mre should probably watch the film with subtitles on because, Peter didn't say the word, shalom.

In the movies, who knows? In the comics, however, a number of Spidey writers over the years have written him as a Jew, although never explicitly did anything to show it.

Can you give an example of this? I always assumed his family was Christian or something, but he was either an atheist or agnostic.

I remember reading it in a book, ha. Not the best source, I know.

A number of Spidey writers (Lee, Peter David, Bendis, etc.) have written Peter with very Jewish characteristics. He lives in Forest Hills, Queens with his doting aunt, works hard in school and his a bit nerdy, was nothing like the high school jock Flash Thompson...you get the point. Like I said, it was never explicit, but the argument can definitely be made.
