First off, Mister J and Hunter, please keep this here, at least for a while. Most TDK fans check the spoiler boards first, and I know you'll understand the concept of product placement :cwink:

Now, to business. I've drawn up a petition that will, hopefully, be submitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the Oscar people) calling for them to get off their own pedestals and see The Dark Knight for what it is: an epic, compelling, and engrossing film worthy of recognition and awards. It is the first comic book movie to really stand a chance of winning Best Picture, we can't let that chance slip away!

All I'm asking is that you at least read the petition, and you can add anything else that I may have missed by leaving a comment when you sign.

Let's get the momentum rolling early!!

TDK was a good movie, but hardly worthy of a best picture nomination. all this talk of it being a brilliant masterpiece is ridiculous and kinda bugs me. i liked the film, but it has too many flaws to keep it from being a best picture worthy masterpiece. a nomination for heath, that i could get behind.

our opinion will not affect their opinion.

Their opinion will affect the other "their" opinion.

i can support best actor for heath, best music, and i dunno if there's any stunt categories but it had a couple that were really good. best picture isn't going to happen, not just because it's a "comic" movie, but because it's an action movie in general

I think its a very noble move, but I doubt a bunch of batman fans opinions are going to sway their decision to nominate for best picture, though I would love for it to happen I just dont see it.

The Oscar people are just ignorants.. They always choose with their asses!

Well Heath will get nominated and probably will win, and The Dark Knight has been the best movie so far this year. The Oscar voters are waiting til fall/winter months when most of the Oscar-contenders come out (Benjamin Button, Reservation Road, etc.). But it should get nominated for best picture and other top categories. Like Richard Roeper said if Lord of The Rings or Chicago can get nominated then so should The Dark Knight which has been critically acclaimed. The only other "Oscar movies" to come out this year so far IMO have been In Bruges, Snow Angels, and Wall-E.

Too many flaws???

What is your favorite movie/s cause i sure as hell will find flaws in it too...so by your definition the word masterpiece should be banned when describing movies...

And considering TDK has better reviews than 4 of the 5 nominated Best Picture movies of 2007 and has bigger overall praise from the audience than any movie in the last 3-4 years,i'd say you're dead wrong here.

With everyone jokingly insulting the OSCAR people, the film wont get anything. They have feelings too. (starts crying in a heroic way , then waits for nomination)

It's common knowledge that the Academy loves Crime movies...and since "TDK" easily plays more like a Crime film than a straight-laced Comic Book Adaptation, you never know...

"The Dark Knight" IS the best picture of the year so far. I'm not saying that as a Batman fan, nor am I saying it ignorantly or blinded by my love of the character...Seriously, look at the list of 2008 films so far...what competition is there at this point?

Of course there are several Oscar contenders such as "Body of Lies" and "Australia" that have yet to be released...but "Dark Knight" is just as deserving...Maybe even more so for being a type of film and from a genre that the Academy chooses, for whatever reason, to ignore...and yet still being praised as a work of genius, which it is.

The awards had the worst rating this year...why?
Because they continue to give awards to movies the general public doesnt agree nor care for.
How can they take their ratings back?

It's simple, nominate the most popular movie of the year which happens to be almost unanimously critically acclaimed...i'm not saying TDK has to win,but it will receive a Best Picture nomination whether some members here think it's the second coming of Christ or not.

i never said a masterpiece had to be a flawless film. all movies have flaws, no doubt. but im saying, TDK had too many flaws to allow it to be a msterpiece in my opinion. in the films attempt to be epic in scope, the film lost its focus, it was very fractured, not giving the themes or characters the proper opportunity to be explored. the story went off on unecessary tangents, with things like gordons faked death, the mr. reese dude, and the whole two-face ending. its ham fisted speeches showed an extreme lack in subtlty. the main character seemed left at the wayside in exchange for supporting characters. some questionable acting, mainly on behalf of maggie and bale. the film just tried really hard to be something bigger, and it wasnt always successful in doing so. it was a good film, i liked it. but these are the sorts of things that held it back. and im sure you'll argue them all to death with your blind devotion to the film...so i also kind of dont care....

if going by whats generally popular in pop culture (i.e. movies and music) i dont trust the opinion of the general population to have any say in what quality art is. i trust the academy far more. just because a film isnt popular in the general population, doesnt make it an undeserving film. and oscar winners shouldnt be decided on whats best for ratings. last year, i blieve the big winners were no country for old men and there will be blood. and in fact, both films were indeed two of the best films of the year and greatly deserved the nominations, wins, and recognition.

TWBB had a worse critical reception than TDK...you know from the people that should be the judges of a movie's quality but i'm sure how you'll spin that again :o

And even though i liked TWBB except for Daniel Day Lewis everything else is nothing special...he holds the whole movie.
If anyone else is in his role the movie will be mediocre...and that doesnt speak too well of the other parts of the movie.

But even if a dont consider it a masterpiece i'm not going to go on forums and brag about how it doesnt deserve the awards it's got...i'm not so egoistical to consider my oppinion more important than the masses or the awards juries.I hate nothing more when people consider their oppinion so valid...for yourself sure, but not to ignore everyone else's.

I like the Godfather but i was never impressed with it,i like Goodfellas better...but you will never hear me say that the movie is overated or stuff like that...just because ONE person doesnt like something it doesnt lesser the value of it.

And just because i loved TDK it doesnt mean i ''blindly'' will defend it...for myself it's perfect, just like you would consider something else perfect(or near)...it's called taste,it has nothing to do with me being a Batman fan...i don like Burton's movies i despise Schumacher's and i think BB is quite good but pretty flawed at the end.

no offense but that would be a crap way to hold the oscars....the most popular movie of the year isn't always the best movie of the year....look at last year...wasn't one of the most popular movies transformers?

and the last awards may have been low rated but if people didn't care about the movies nominated then they're morons. there will be blood and no country for old men are two of the best movies of the new millenium.

I always seem to agree with everything you say CFE!

I completely agree. Not only that, but if LOTR:ROTK can get best picture, then I certainly think TDK could get at least a nomination.

And one thing I'm really getting tired of is the pretentious attitude that comes along with the Oscars (I'm not directing this at anyone here either, it's a general observation.) But it seems like today Oscar-caliber movies are billed as such simply because their different, and not because of their actual quality. I'm not saying that those kind of movies are bad, but why not nominate a movie that people actually watch for once?

Like others have said, why do you think the Oscars had low ratings this year? It's because the general public didn't give a crap about the movies that won awards. I'm not trying to say movies like No Country For Old Men are bad, but I will say this. I wouldn't have driven an hour to an IMAX to watch that movie, nor would I have paid for multiple showings to see it in Theaters.

this is just crazy goofy! transfomers, the highest grossing film of 07, nominated for 3 oscars, and out of the blue Bourne wins all three and one more for good measure. looks like that should have been nominated for best picture right? the oscars are a joke. there i said it. will any of you agree? of course not! cause my opinion is that, opinion, and not gospel!!! TDK won't get the nod because there are more "people" like motown marvel than we think. and they don't like following a mad "mob" that truely enjoys good movies, popcorn or regular dramas. but hey, that is MY opinion.

I don't believe in online petition.

But I will say, this moving getting a nomination for best picture if it really is one of the best 5 films of 2008 isn't a stretch of the imagination. This movie is just as quality as LOTR, Gladiator and Titanic (a popcorn flick for chicks), I don't think it will get rejected simply because of the source material if it actually deserves the nomination.

Not that this is going to help, I added a comment.

The Dark Knight was a humbling experience for me becuase the Joker was unlike conventional movie villains, he was like a real villain, he was the Einstein of sociolog, he was able to inspire true urban fear, and gain power with nothing but, as he put it, "A couple of bombs". It takes a great actor to play, it takes a great movie to produce, and it takes a great writer to make, such a character. The Dark Knight should get number one for all of them.

plain stupid petition. It will create oscar Buzz on it's own merit. Or not. That's not a case of making a petition for a film in the midle of the year... Plain stupid. I would love for it to make to the oscars, but I wont sign a petition based in hype. Plain dumb idea... It will make on it's own.

I couldn't agree more.
