Confederacy of the Takers

President Barack Obama’s opponents have unwittingly come up with a brilliant plan to avoid the “fiscal cliff.” They want to secede from the union.
If Obama were serious about being a good steward of the nation’s finances, he’d let them.

The White House, in one of those astro-turf efforts that make people feel warm about small-d democracy, launched a “We the People” program on its website last year, allowing Americans to petition their government for a redress of grievances. Any petition that receives 25,000 or more signatures within 30 days is promised a response (though not necessarily a favorable one) from the Obama administration.

And so a large number of patriotic Americans, mostly from states won by Mitt Romney last week, have petitioned the White House to let them secede. They should be careful about what they wish for. It would be excellent financial news for those of us left behind if Obama were to grant a number of the rebel states their wish “to withdraw from the United States and create (their) own NEW government” (the petitions emphasize “new” by capitalizing it).

Red states receive, on average, far more from the federal government in expenditures than they pay in taxes. The balance is the opposite in blue states. The secession petitions, therefore, give the opportunity to create what would be, in a fiscal sense, a far more perfect union.

Among those states with large numbers of petitioners asking out: Louisiana (more than 28,000 signatures at midday Tuesday), which gets about $1.45 in federal largess for every $1 it pays in taxes; Alabama (more than 20,000 signatures), which takes $1.71 for every $1 it puts in; South Carolina (26,000), which takes $1.38 for its dollar; and Missouri (22,000), which takes $1.29 for its dollar.

What would be left is a Confederacy of Takers, including relatively poor states such as Alaska, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi.

One of the few would-be Confederacy members that pays more than it receives is Texas, which because of oil money is close to break-even at 94 cents of benefits for its tax dollar. (The statistics, from an analysis of tax and revenue data by the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, were published in 2006, but the broad pattern doesn’t vary much over time.)

Depending on how aggressive a fiscal hawk he wishes to be, Obama could also try to offload onto the Confederacy of the Takers North and South Dakota and Montana ($1.73, $1.49 and $1.58 in benefits, respectively), but this would probably only work if Canada agreed to allow overflight rights for American aircraft to reach the West Coast states of Washington, Oregon and California (88 cents, 97 cents and 79 cents on their tax dollars, respectively).

Its funny when you think about the fact the the people who say Obama won because people want handouts and free stuff don't realize that their state is paying in less than it is taking.

They all just need to go watch Lincoln this weekend. That whole thing is like a perfectly timed parallel.

If I didn't dislike Olbermann almost as much as Limbaugh, I'd link his response to the last election when Texas wanted to secede. Hell, I will anyway, though I feel dirty, lol. I know he's annoying, but his breakdown on why it would be bad for Texas was actually entertaining.

[YT]0R92mcTzWRw[/YT]

For those of you with Olber-intolerance, basically -

Fema alone has sent over 3.5 billion in aid to Texas alone since 2001. Other organizations sent over 1 billion for Hurricane Ike. NASA would pull out creating a 26,000 job void, and 2.5 billion in lost revenue. Move everyone out of Fort Hood costing 6 billion more. They'd lose access to several organizations like the airforce, army, navy, FDA, CDC, FBI, CIA, and Post Office. They have 4 nuclear power plants, but no where to put the waste. The US gave Texas 1 billion in Pell grants alone. The US would put up a border around Texas's northern border as well. By 2020 hispanics will out number whites, and put out a ballot initiative to have Texas join Mexico.

Basically, just out of the gate, they'd be about half a trillion in debt. Lost access to a lot of important organizations. Be fenced in, and probably eventually absorbed by Mexico. As annoying as Olbermann is, I think he painted a pretty good picture of why secession is a stupid idea. Any of the ppl pushing this now can't see past their own noses. Our population can't go without their newest Ipad's, imagine when they no longer have access to half of the things they take for granted.

Pretty much what I've been saying all along.

Of course, this is an awful lot of energy and attention being paid to what amounts to a non-issue.

The media should stick to reporting to issues that have some sort of relevance, not online petitions.

I just got back from a trip with my wife to Gettysburg. If that's not a humbling experience, I don't know what is. So many died to preserve this country and for these people to bring these petitions is such a slap in the face to those who died.

Does that include blacks that voted for Obama just because he's black.

Why wouldn't it? But these people who voted for Romney clearly because he's white had malevolent intent. The blacks that voted for Obama wanted to see someone black in the White House for once in their life before they die. Doubt it's happening again.

How many states have filed one so far?
None. Not one state government has filed a petition proposing secession. Just some ********* Republicans who seem to think that they speak for everyone in their state.

Pretty much.

I think there are petitions from every state, but not one state has done anything official.

"Texas currently doesn't have a state income tax"

Wow, seriously? Why are they Republican? Do they make up for the budget shortfall with a huge sales tax or something? Otherwise they must be super financially dependent on a big federal government.

The Russians called it!! They where only off by 3 years. :oldrazz:

`There will be civil war in US in 2009`

Secession fell on deaf ears in Texas, because if there's one thing Texas likes it's the status quo.

White House Response to petitions for states to peacefully withdraw from the United States:

Official White House Response to Peacefully grant the State of Louisiana to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government. and 8 other petitions
Our States Remain United

By Jon Carson

Thank you for using the White House's online petitions platform to participate in your government.

In a nation of 300 million people -- each with their own set of deeply-held beliefs -- democracy can be noisy and controversial. And that's a good thing. Free and open debate is what makes this country work, and many people around the world risk their lives every day for the liberties we often take for granted.

But as much as we value a healthy debate, we don't let that debate tear us apart.

Our founding fathers established the Constitution of the United States "in order to form a more perfect union" through the hard and frustrating but necessary work of self-government. They enshrined in that document the right to change our national government through the power of the ballot -- a right that generations of Americans have fought to secure for all. But they did not provide a right to walk away from it. As President Abraham Lincoln explained in his first inaugural address in 1861, "in contemplation of universal law and of the Constitution the Union of these States is perpetual." In the years that followed, more than 600,000 Americans died in a long and bloody civil war that vindicated the principle that the Constitution establishes a permanent union between the States. And shortly after the Civil War ended, the Supreme Court confirmed that "[t]he Constitution, in all its provisions, looks to an indestructible Union composed of indestructible States."

Although the founders established a perpetual union, they also provided for a government that is, as President Lincoln would later describe it, "of the people, by the people, and for the people" -- all of the people. Participation in, and engagement with, government is the cornerstone of our democracy. And because every American who wants to participate deserves a government that is accessible and responsive, the Obama Administration has created a host of new tools and channels to connect concerned citizens with White House. In fact, one of the most exciting aspects of the We the People platform is a chance to engage directly with our most outspoken critics.

So let's be clear: No one disputes that our country faces big challenges, and the recent election followed a vigorous debate about how they should be addressed. As President Obama said the night he won re-election, "We may have battled fiercely, but it's only because we love this country deeply and we care so strongly about its future."

Whether it's figuring out how to strengthen our economy, reduce our deficit in a responsible way, or protect our country, we will need to work together -- and hear from one another -- in order to find the best way to move forward. I hope you'll take a few minutes to learn more about the President's ideas and share more of your own.
