PlayStation Firmware Updates

could do with a browser update, the current version is pretty bad

Gamersmint has discovered a few of the stuff that the recently released Firmware update 3.56 fixes. The most important of the lot is that they have fixed the ECDSA signature bug.
This means, private keys will become useless for anyone who downloads this firmware update or any future ones released after this.
Sony’s also fixed the downgrading with this update and it’s no longer possible (without new hardware) to do so.
3.56 CFW might arrive but it won’t work on systems who are using this firmware version and might only be installed in pre- 3.56 firmware consoles.
Sony really delivered with this security patch, as reports are coming from all around and we can confirm that anyone who installs 3.56 on their consoles which are hacked, won’t be able to access PSN.
A user over at Neogaf has summarized what this means pretty well:
What this means:
- All consoles on virgin 3.56 or higher can’t install CFW or homebrew without a downgrade via hardware.
- Homebrew will run on 3.56 or newer once resigned with different keys (but you can only install homebrew on 3.55 or lower)
- CFW 3.56 will eventually arrive but will only be able to be installed on 3.55 or lower.
This is a major triump for Sony as anyone who downloads this firmware update is unlikely to succeed in hacking their consoles in the future.

Yeah I haven't been signing in much so got this update now.

Rumor, Cloud Storage coming to PS+
Kotaku has learned that earlier today, Sony informed developers of a new feature for the PlayStation 3: the ability to save games in the "cloud".
Cloud storage means that, rather than just keeping your save game data on your PlayStation 3's hard drive, users will be given the option to upload their saves remotely to a server. The advantage of this is that not only does it save the user space on their hard drive, but since it's tied to a PlayStation Network account, it can be pulled down to different consoles whenever and wherever the user desires.
First rumoured all the way back in 2009, there is of course a catch: it'll only be made available to PlayStation Plus subscribers, not the great unwashed. Actually, there are two catches: Sony bundled the announcement with the clause that, because saving games to the cloud "will allow save data with the copy prohibited attribute to be copied into the online storage", developers are able to opt out and bar their games from using it should there be a concern.
Sony will call the process "Online Saving", and it'll be made available as part of the PS3's upcoming 3.60 firmware update. We've contacted the company for further information, and will update if we hear back.

If true, this is huge and a great feature, especially for anyone thats ever had a YLOD and lost their gamesaves. It will also be great for those who dont backup their saves regularly. I sure hope they do implement this

This is a cool feature. I wonder if this is how playing the same game on NGP and PS3 works? You play a game on PS3, save it in the cloud, and then load that save to your NGP and keep playing.

FW 3.60 is coming and Cloud Saves is confirmed!

Hey everyone – We’ve got an exciting new feature coming exclusively to PlayStation Plus subscribers. Included in the system software update (v3.60) coming tomorrow to PS3, PlayStation Network’s new online storage for game saves feature gives PlayStation Plus subscribers the capability to back up game save data to the cloud. Online storage for game saves is a great way for PlayStation Plus subscribers to ensure that their data files are secure and also for users who wish to access their files from other PS3 systems.

The new online storage feature allows gamers to store up to 150MB of game save data and a maximum of 1000 data files per PSN account. Users also have the ability to back-up “copy-prohibited save data,” and all previously saved data may be restored once per 24 hour period. When the new feature launches, most PS3 titles will be compatible with online storage for game saves, and moving forward, all new titles will have the capability to offer the storage option.
As I mentioned before, online storage for game saves functionality is included automatically for PlayStation Plus subscribers with system software update (v3.60), which will be available on March 10, 2011, and users can access their stored data on the XMB at any time. Additionally, users who save their files to the cloud can access their data on any PS3, using their PSN sign-in ID.
PlayStation Plus subscribers should turn on the auto-download feature to ensure that the update will begin downloading as soon as it’s available, so you can start backing up your game saves right away. If you aren’t already a PlayStation Plus subscriber, be sure to check out our bi-weekly post highlighting the free games, discounts and exciting exclusives we offer, in addition to the upcoming online storage for game saves feature.
Other minor features will also be added via system software update (v3.60). For more information please visit http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/ once the update is live.

This is probably the best thign out of this thing

"Users also have the ability to back-up “copy-prohibited save data,” and all previously saved data may be restored once per 24 hour period"

Really that should be for ALL PS3 users as its beyond frustrating how some games are locked

I dont think so. It should be Plus only. People crapped on Plus when it was first announced bc "it had no features worth paying for" yet over the past several months, they've been adding features to make it a more attractive option, yet it still gets complaints. Its a premium service and as such should have extra features not available to all to justify a purchase of it.

Here is how to use it.

To back-up:
1. Select [Game]>[Save Data Utility]
2. Focus on the save data you wish to back up
3. Open up the option menu using “triangle” and select [copy]
4. Select [Online Storage] as the destination of back up.
To copy:
1. Select [Game] > [Save Data Utility] > [Online Storage]
2. Focus on the save data you wish to copy.
3. Open up an option menu using “triangle” and select [copy].

Is it possible to copy the user data? Such as the trophies record?

theres no reason to copy trophy data as that is automatically saved on Sony's side when you sync it up.

The other cool thing about this update, is that Sony did what people said was impossible without new hardware. They have plugged all of the security holes and sent hackers back to square one. Of course those that have not updated past 3.55 can still use their hacked system, but it is still a great achievement. The update also gives you opitions to set how long it takes for your controller to turn when not in use.

I don't buy games online so should I update anyway?

The new FW gives you the chance to put you game saves on to an outside server (Cloud). This includes game saves that are copy protected by the games devs. It has nothing to do with buying games online.

Thanks Kal. :2face:

Jesus, I can't download the 3.60 update. I've been trying for 3 days already and am getting erros like 80710723, 80710102 and others.
Any solutions?

First time I'm having this many problems.

Thanks, I'm trying it now. It's taking forever, though, speed keeps decreasing. But I hope it works.
