The Gifted POLARIS the Magnetic Mutant - The Emma Dumont Thread

He doesn't need to actually physically appear in order for him being her dad to come up.

Much like the comics again, I've gotten the impression that Mags being her father, will be a suspicion that remains unconfirmed (to Lorna & the viewers, anyway). So it will be hinted at, implied, but knowing for sure will be an ongoing, "mystery" subplot -- is he, or isn't he? -- that won't be resolved 'til later down the line, hopefully in some big way.

As you can see here, NiX himself actually alludes to it:

... And what is our Polaris's relationship to Magneto?

Also, about her green hair, it's since been revealed that she wasn't in fact born with it:

... but it was instead the result of a massive, Mutant powered EMP, that she prematurely discharged as a child, at high altitude. This probably caused a green aurora, which is likely related to & the actual reason for, her hair color change. That's the way I figured it, anyway, using superhero pseudoscience. :thf: :O

As if she didn't have green hair highlights in the first episode. They probably thought its better to give her full green instead of highlights after seeing the pilot.

Right, it's changing from the use of her powers, just like in the comics. Albeit more slowly, in stages, it appears. So more like an homage, an adaption, rather than a direct translation and/or exact duplication.

Nah, it was more than likely always intended. Emma D. & Jamie C have said from the beginning, that their looks will evolve to match their growing powers (as the show progresses), to closer resemble their CB counterparts in both cases.

I can't wait to see her. I wonder if fox has the same issue with tv that marvel has where they can't use characters in the Netflix shows in the movies

I don't think that Marvel is prevented from using the TV characters in the films or vice versa. Kevin Feige, just doesn't seem to want to.

Also if she's already got the full-on green hair by the second episode, it'll be interesting to see what made it "evolve" so quickly. Especially since she obviously gets arrested in the pilot and has one of those power-damping collars put on her.

Think it was Lauren Shuler Donner who said they were using characters they were not planning on using in the films.

Although you never know that could change at some point but if marvel is anything to go by even they want to keep the shows as separate as possible to the films unless its a super special occasion

I doubt that was the case here. If it is, her natural hair color isn't accurate.

Not sure, but Blink's just one eXample, of a character who's now appeared in both. My hunch is it won't be quite the same issue with FoX, as it is with DizMar, or even DC for that matter. Each takes a different approach to their respective universes, which are also in a constant state of fluX (to varying degrees), at any given time. And FoX has always been a lil' more fast & loose with such things, besides.

I think the novelty of adhering to a strict continuity & having everything connected, is now becoming less desirable, as it's so superficial in most cases. It's also beginning to be viewed as stifling creativity & encouraging derivativeness, in some ways too, I believe. Kinda like the current backlash against events & X-overs in the comics, wherein writers have to sideline (derail?) their own visions (for their series), to take part in a mandated -- but unrelated -- line-wide, all-encompassing, "umbrella" scenario. If I had to venture a guess, it's inevitable things would buckle under the weight of it all, hence the need for reboots & the like.

My thing is, if you want to connect them, fine. But then connect them completely. Don't do this "oh we'll reference the films on the shows, and bring in some characters from time to time. But the films will do everything possible to pretend like the shows don't exist." Don't make it a one-way street basically.

And if you want them to be separate ok. But then make them separate. Don't be wishy washy about possible "connections" down the road if you don't intend to pay that off at some point.

I'll give WB/DC some credit here. At least they make it 100% crystal clear that their shows and films take place in different universes and don't connect in any way.

My feeling has been, that it has something to do with this scene:

As in the... shade? :cwink: :oldrazz:

I am expecting abit of both tbh, some tiny film references every so often and some moments that just makes you confused and question where it fits in at all with the films.

The producers will talk about how its in the Filmverse but at the same time being its own thing blah blah blah.

HA, true enough! Not quite MCU, not quite DCEU, but something, sorta... in between, lol. In the end tho, they're all pretty much having their cake, and eating it too.

Me, too. Mostly tho, so I can see different versions of 2 personal favorites, Black Canary & Supergirl. Both have been bandied about & rumored to be making appearances as new iterations, in upcoming DCEU projects, so I'm hopeful.

Too funny! :funny: I'm so glad she was chosen to play Polaris, I just love her!! :ilv:

A gift ;) to Emma D., from Jermaine Rivers, the actor who plays Shatter:

jermaineriversofficial That feeling you get when you surprise one of your homies with something that fits them 100%. #priceless!! #thegifted #mutantsunite #polaris #magneto #xmen #instagram #marvel #geekout #fox

Love it, our Mutants are bonding. Found this real heartwarming, I mean, whatta super-nice guy. So thoughtful, and just classy, seems like an X-ceptionally decent human being.

CBR: Yes, Polaris Is Magneto’s Daughter on The Gifted

Well it's always nice to see, but like with green hair it was not exactly much in much doubt for me as there is no studio conflict like with Wanda in the MCU preventing Magneto's name from appearing.

CBR: Polaris/Lorna Dane carries plenty of baggage. In the comic books, she’s been Magneto’s daughter, Havok’s girlfriend, and Malice’s psychic punching bag. What is your take on the character?

Our version of Lorna rolls back the clock to when she didn’t know everything. Definitely, the mental illness is an issue. She’s unstable. The thing that is going to play out very gradually over the course of the series is an exploration of her past. As you know from the comics, it’s a little murky. It’s not like she’s living at home with Magneto and eating cereal.

I will say, from a comic perspective, her relationship with Havok is something we haven’t nailed down when that would be or how that would happen.

He’s in the movies. He’s not part of the show. It either needs to be far in the future or far in the past, because there’s certain things we can’t do. But, to all the comic fans, it’s absolutely something we think about. How do we navigate this? We care about this history and how do we figure out our version of this history? When we think of it, the baggage of mental illness – and there is some awareness she is Magneto’s daughter – I mean, her powers certainly are like Magneto’s.

That’s something we will be exploring as time goes on, but more towards the end of the season, when some of these ideas and suspicions come to the fore. She has to confront, “Okay, if that’s the case, what does it mean?” The idea is there are challenges and opportunities with that. In some ways, it might divide her from her friends. In other ways, does she accept the mantle of her birthright? Is it her job to be Magneto in his absence?

Blink has always been a fan favorite character, from her very first appearance in the mid-’90s. How extensive are her powers on The Gifted? Did you have discussions about her bing able to visit different dimensions or realities?

It’s certainly come up. In the trailer, you’ll notice she has this physical relationship with her portals. She pulls them open. I just want to reassure people that it’s not that we don’t know about the way she throws portals in the comics. It’s not like we don’t know Polaris’ hair is green. I tend not to read internet comments, but one that got me was, “Polaris’ hair is green.” “You think I don’t know that?

Come on, dude. Gimme a second. Polaris’ hair will be green.” In the case of Blink, this is a Blink who is not there yet. In the X-Men movie, “Days of Future Past,” she’s sort of the girl who makes portals, but doesn’t say much. What I love about Blink is her powers are sort of like, “I’m out of here. Screw you guys.” There’s that attitude. She has her own mind about things. She’s working with the Mutant Underground, but she’s not a joiner. If there were uniforms, she wouldn’t wear one. She’s very independently minded.

Anyway I watched the premiere and there is a big Lorna related twist there that I can't share sorry. Though from the reshot scenes it looks like they are giving her more agency and not as Mr. Nix said was the original plan for her to be just the girlfriend character like she was often depicted in the comics.

Seems like Lorna will get her due in this show, and it's exciting to see.

Cute, lil' guy using what looks like Lorna's powers, in this recent, charmingly crafted promo vid:
