The Dark Knight Popularity

Superman failed this year because the most of the people has realise that is the worst superhero ever.

Oh ok. thanks for clearing that up man. Weve all been wondering what was up with its box office.

:D

Well, BB changed Batman's situation, and now this franchise has enough popularity to get success for sequels ;)

thats half true. each of the big 3 super heros-superman first, then batman, and now spiderman-have had their time when every movie they made was instant record breaking hits at the box office, and right now it is spidey's turn. no other real way to explain it cept batman had everything going against it that spidey had going for it.

but it is widely known batman is thought to be the "coolest" of all superheros amongst people 10-25, so dont kid yourselves in popularity. Batman Begins box office failed due to lack of awaresness; if it had SPIDER-MAN type awareness it woudla made a lot more money, and IF the Dark Knight gets SPIDERMAN sized awareness it WILL top 300 million domestically, which would put it inthe league of spiderman and also as the only superhero to do it in 2 seperate franchises.

dont kid yourself. superman is the most famous hero ever, but batmans the most popular. spiderman just owns right now due to the first film was so huge, which is due to novelty factory and lack of super hero movies in general.

People were aware of Batman Begins. It was a Batman movie. All I hear from BB fanboys is the amazing "legs" it had in theatres. There just isn't a mass appeal for Batman as shown by the overseas numbers. It's too real for it's own good. Check the Top 20 highest grossing movies all-time (worldwide). All of them are surreal movies that take audiences to another place. Batman just can't awe an audience like Spider-Man can. The franchise will never make Spider-Man numbers. And that's not a knock on the Batman franchise. I'm sure it'll still be a great for what it is.

the franchise made spiderman numbers in 1989 :o

Im pretty confident TDK will make as much as money as the new Spiderman. People needed time to get used to the new Batman. Spiderman was new all along (on screen). At least Im almost sure it wont be a Superman-dissapointment(moneywise).

I wonder if all members of the SHH could choose if to take a look at Venom or at Joker, which decision would be made more times?

Batman 1989 numbers were pretty impressive given that time period.

Spider-man doesn't look like any another superhero franchise.

Usually sequels are not as good as 1st movie, but with Spidey there is another situation.

Spidey 1 was just not bad superhero movie, but 2nd was much better than 1st.

So I think 3rd will be even better than 2nd.

lol, nice way to egg on a Venom response so you can link to the poll that's already been done. I forgot a board about superheroes represents the general publics view on superhero movies.

I remember that poll, Joker won with 75-80 votes, while Venom had only 40-50.

Can't remember clearer, but I know that Joker won it.

Joker did win. And of course he did. I don't deny that Batman has a bigger internet following than anyone else. Especially on here. That doesn't mean it represents the general public. Everyone on here is bias for superheroes.

well i thought the second was even more pathetic than the first :o

...but im sure the 3rd will be better than both of em.

Batman won't make as much as Spiderman because of the appeal to children.

The merchandise is far stronger with Spiderman because he is a bright, fun character where as Batman is moody and dark.

A large percentage of Spiderman's audience is kids (plus the adults who have to take them) so that gets more people into the cinema already.

I'm confident of 'The Dark Knight' getting up to near three hundred million in America thanks to the success of Begins and the Schmacher stigma being erased.

Throw in the Joker as well who will bring an increase by himself.

It won't get Spiderman numbers, but it's audience isn't as wide as Spidey due to the approach that has been taken.

At the end of the day i'm just glad we're getting worthy Batman films and as long as they're are making enough to be profitable and provide us with more films that's all that matters.

yep! Singer made a wannabe Superman movie but without this generations real face to Superman.
Routh just isnt mature looking enough, and his acting stinks for this role! :)

Good post!

I also doubt that Batman movies will ever get to $300m, but it has now it's audience and people now remember BB.

So I have no doubts in sequel's succes in BO.

*covers ears* lalalalalala this is so hard to talk about, i love both spidey and batman, batman more, but still. when it comes to box office numbers batman will always be spidey's b*tch, but heres a message to all the spidey fans, just accept it, its a FACT, soon to be proven come 2008, when it comes to quality, bat-fans have won....simple as that, accept it people.

I think they are great both, Spiderman and Batman, but if I have to chose I chose Spiderman

I don't really think anyone here can doubt that for the these specific franchises at the moment, Spider-Man will be the clear winner with the general audience, and thus the box office.

I think BB did underperform a bit, but for it's final domestic take, it really was amazing considering that weak 40 million opening weekend. So there is a hint there that word-of-mouth eventually got people into seats.

Honestly though, I care more about which film franchise will be remembered 20, 50, 80 years from now. Just like how Donner's Superman is still considered a classic, I want the films to be remembered like that as well. BB raised the bar for the genre imo, and I have no doubt it'll be raised again with TDK. Is it important for it to make the most? Hell no. I say f**k the box office, AS LONG as it makes enough for sequels. Because I'd rather have 3 movies that are at the top of the game, than 3 movies that simply broke box office records.

$251M domestic isn't Spider-Man numbers.
Adjusted, 251 million in 1989 is equal to 400 million today. B89's Hype and reception were extremely Spider-Man-like back in '89. At least, that's what I've been told. :o

I'd love for you in 20 years, to try and buy a movie ticket for 10 bucks.

And when they tell you, "the price has risen to 17.50 because of inflation, sir"...I want you to say "inflation insmation".

Jack Napier: "And Bob! Remembah! You . . . . . . are my #1 . . . . . and IIIIIIIII"

He said, "You are my #1 guy!" He just was breathing so heavily it sounded like "and I".

no it was definetly, and bob, remember, you are my number one and iiiiiiiiiii, bob replies with 'yes boss'

Napier was imitating Grissom when Grissom told him, "Jack, you are my #1 guy." He was imitating Palance's constant heavy breathing which makes it sound like "and I" but he really was saying "guy". The other makes no sense anyway.
